Vic Black 2 (Baron)

Vic Black will join the Mets for Sunday’s double-header

Triple-A RHP Vic Black will join the Mets tomorrow as the 26th player on the roster for Sunday’s doubleheader against the D-Backs.

He must return to Triple-A after the game, unless the Mets intend to keep him, at which point another player will need to be removed from the roster.

Black was 0-1 with seven saves and a 1.45 ERA in 17 games at Triple-A.

He had a 1.15 WHIP and a 3.46 ERA in 15 relief appearances for the Mets last season.

Black was acquired from the Pirates in August with 2B Dilson Herera for John Buck and Marlon Byrd.

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

It was assumed that Black would be in the Opening Day bullpen. But, he had a terrible spring training, struggling with his control and velocity. He seems to have both under control in Vegas. He is going to be permanently promoted sooner than later, I bet. He’s doing well and the Mets can always use help in the bullpen.

It's amazing to me that you all slam Matt for not checking stats, but you all seem to conveniently breeze past a few:

3 ERs in 18+ innings....

RHB are hitting a robust .152 vs. him and LHB a slightly below average .241...

A K per inning

7 saves and for all this yelling and screaming about walks, ONE blown save...17 appearances.

All of this while pitching in what is by general consensus, a HORRIFIC pitching environment (PCL)

Yes the walks are a concern, but i think most of you are way off base here.

If Wheeler has another bad outing today, I bet he gets sent down, moving Matzusaka to the rotation, keeping Black until Gee comes back, and then either Valverde gets DFA or Black gets sent back down.

He has his control down? Have you checked his walks against IP? 17 BBs in 18.2 IP. Cerrone, do you even think when you write? My god.

He'll throw one good inning and everyone on here will scream that he's ready. Just like they do with Eric Campbell who has all of 19 major league at bats. Yet people on here are ready for him to be our starting first baseman/left fielder.

Black is walking so many in AAA. He is not ready. And Campbell? Let's wait and see before he's anointed our next savior.

It would be nice to mix in a few guys we KNOW can play Major League Baseball with all the guys we HOPE can play Major League Baseball.

With the way the kid is hitting in front of Nimmo if Black can become a regular out of the pen for us we certainly won that trade

Keep him with the club and cut ties with Valverde. To follow-up a Seinfeld thread, the only reason the guy's still here is spite.

Black sucks. He throws a straight fastball which he can't even control. Sure I'd rather see him than Valverde, but I don't think he is a MLB level reliever.

F Dilson Herrera, Mets: Acquired from the Pirates as the player to be named later in last August's Marlin Byrd/John Buck trade, the 20-year-old Herrera went into Friday's game leading the minor leagues with 67 hits. He is hitting .328/.368/.436 with three home runs and 11 stolen bases at High Class-A this season, showing off his ability to hit to all fields and an advanced approach at the plate. Herrera played second base exclusively while with the Pirates, but the Mets have given him some time at shortstop and the early returns are positive. Most players to be named later are fringe prospects. Herrera is legit and his excellent start to the season as well as the continued development of his skills have him climbing the prospect ranks this year. He is still two years away from helping the Mets, give or take.

>>> He seems to have both under control in Vegas.

17 walks in 18 innings (walking 8.20 per 9 innings) is having that under control?  So what would you consider wild then?

nagel100

he has to develop more control.  his arm is electric but he is very erratic.

a walk an inning won't cut it.

BringBackDaveTelghe

Black has 17 walks in 18 innings and wasn't promoted from camp because of his wildness.

The analysis he's doing "well" may not be that well thought out.

How about cutting ties with Valverde. Leave Black up here. His era is in the mid 3's. Start him out in the 7th inning and hopefully he can set up for Mejia.

Dice K is not coming back to the rotation. Degrom and Montero are here to stay. Wheeler is not going anywhere either.

@Kevin McManus

2 lottery tickets for a month of Byrd, I'd say we already won.

Dilson is hitting a ton though, 15 xbh's 11 sb's hitting 333.

Writing off a reliever that strikes people out from a correctable flaw may be the definition of stupidity.

Not possible. Sandy would rather finish last than admit a free agent he signed was a mistake. CY won't be released.

I'd be shocked if Campbell becomes an everyday outfielder on this team. I obviously like what I've seen thus far, but I'm just not sold on him yet. There has to be a reason why he's been in the minor leagues all this long, and couldn't get a callup before he turned 27.

Remember, Satin looked great also last year after he was called up. How did that turn out?

@mets2death "Why did they keep Valverde in the pen??" According to TC and Sandy, for leadership (He's been mentoring Mejia in the closer role, and exhorting Mejia to stay loose in the BP during the game by doing stretching exercises, and mentoring him on the mental aspects of  being a closer.)

Isn't Germen on the DL? He got sick recently, and then there was something reported about a "setback" in his recovery. Not sure what the story is with him, but it doesn't seem like he's capable of pitching at the moment.

@nagel100 he's way too good for St. Lucie. Needs to be at Birmingham now.

Nice! Him and Nimmo have been tearing it up at St. Lucie.

I really like that kid. For trading an old outfielder that we weren't resigning we got a legit 2b prospect and an enigmatic rp with good stuff. Really was an underrated deal.

@nolrog Is he the second coming of Mitch "wild thing" Williams? He had a few good seasons of having roughly a 50-50 K to BB ratio, not ideal, but it can work. For now, though, it's kind of a moot point, because he's got Jenrry, maybe Familia in front of him and also next season, Parnell perhaps?

zoddie

I was going to post the exact same thing.

Matt, I understand youve got a lot on your plate, but taking ten seconds to check a player's stats isn't too much too ask. Don't post things that are demonstratably untrue.

Black was wild in spring training, wild in April, and wild in May.

@nolrog
Yup.  And it's not as if he started out wild and has improved lately.  7 walks in his last 5 appearances.

theglider
theglider

He has walked 17 in 18 innings. And his problem all along has been control. He can't face major league hitters with that wildness. It has to be corrected.

jenkins

@Bob G he won't be released because he will start to hit. There's a better chance of that happening than Campbell or Nieu or Den Decker becoming FT starters

He was supposed to come back Wed, but he now has an "abscess in an undisclosed location" plus flu like symptoms.. according to Rotoworld.

@BringBackDaveTelghe

He's not even in AA yet and we need a shortstop ASAP. I'd much rather have Byrd at 2 years 16 mil than Chris Young. It's not like we have any of prospects that would have been blocked.

Frank Tangorra
Frank Tangorra

Valverde's days of being a closer are over. Once the Mets cut him he's lucky to find a job mopping up somewhere. It seems every time he pitches he gives up runs. He is not the back up closer. I think they should use Familia & Mejia as a closer tandem.

1harris1
1harris1

Maybe so.

I'm certainly on board with playing some of the young guys in place of these veteran retreads. CY does nothing for me.

metstastic

Puello was supposed to be almost ready.

zoddie

What does Chris Young have to do with the Byrd trade, though? Byrd was a free agent so we traded a couple of months of Byrd for a nice 2b prospect who is one of the youngest players in his league and an erratic flamethrower. It was another really good trade by Sandy.

Joe Paulson
Joe Paulson

@Frank Tangorra Soon enough, that very well might be a good tandem, but Mejia has like three saves under his belt and Familia just started being the 8th inning man. The idea was that at least for a little while longer, they wanted some insurance. I agree Valverde (like Farnsworth) isn't much there. But,  like Farnsworth, for a few weeks, it's at least conceivable. Anyway, I'm all for V being gone sooner than later.

hankincolo

@Frank Tangorra You're being a  bit hasty, don't you think Denny's might need him to mop up?
