Vic Black 2 (Baron)

Vic Black to DL with Triple-A Vegas

Mets Triple-A reliever Vic Black was put on the disabled list with a pinched nerve on the right side of his neck, reports Adam Rubin (ESPN NY, Apr. 7).

He is expected to be activated from the DL later this week.

According to Rubin, “The neck issue is new and not believed to have contributed to Black’s spring-training control issues that led to him opening the season in Vegas.”

It's pretty crazy to see just how quickly a perceived strength has become a huge hole. I don't think anyone foresaw Lannan as the second lefty, with Edgin and Leathersich both faltering so much. I don't think anyone expected to be down the projected closer and setup man so quickly either. The two guys they projected to be their top relief arms have combined for 1 inning with 1 earned run allowed and a blown save. Both are on the DL, one for the whole season. Mets really need to make some moves. I would look at both Hanrahan and Madson on minor league deals with significant incentives. If even one pans out, that significantly helps. I don't understand why not...

I thought Nunez would've been an upgrade, but he is a career .267 with 10 HR's, Tejada is .259 with 2 homers for his career.  Not much of an upgrade.  However, any batting that might bring up their total team average will be significant upgrade for the Mets right now.

Regarding the post up top, leave the 18 y/o kid alone.  I don't care how he's progressing.  I don't want to know what he's jogging in today.  I don't want to know where you think he'll be by next season.  LEAVE HIM ALONE.  No team does more to screw up their prospects than this clown posse.  Let the kid play ball for a year or two without creating an expectation he may or may not be able to live up to.  In the mean time, break open Fredo's piggy bank and bring in some adults to play.  The abject cheapness of Fred, Fredo and their mouthpiece Sandy has become intolerable.  They all have to go.

Also i think terry raised his hand in the meeting to vote for getting nunez, but it was too small for anyone to see....

Nunez wouldve been an upgrade for cheap. To say its no big loss is diminishing the real issue. We wont spend to go get a stud so we have to settle for potential little improvements. So not getting a player like nunez is a relatively big deal because it demonstrates how the feont offices cheapness is not about overspending on a big name only to get diminishing returns, it just about being cheap for the sake of being cheap. Although 7 mill for a .200 hitter in chris young does kind of blow up my own argument. They have no shortstops in the organization and are trying to convert flores. It was an easy, smart move that would have been a slight upgrade, even if it was just to get somebody else out there thats not a lightning rod like tejada. And we missed the boat again.

I don't understand why so many people don't like dan warthen. Pitching has been a strength of ours for a while and I think warthen is a big reason why

Uh, a pinched nerve (if that's all it is) is hardly an injury....its more of an inconvenience (as anyone who has ever pinched a nerve in their neck or upper back knows). Lets not get crazy over nothing.

Scary stuff.   I have never seen so many injuries to pitchers before.  Is it the coaching, the medical staff, what? Pitchers used to pitch for 15-20 years and the biggest injury they dealt with was a blister.  That was as devastating as a Tommy John surgery.  By the way, remember when the Rotator Cuff injury was the worst pitching injury?  When was the last time you heard a pitcher getting that?  What's up here?

Everyone on this blog was laughing last week when I said that the mets need to let go of the medical staff, now everyone is agreing with my commend,I love the Mets but not the way they are conducting business, now they said no need to address the bullpen issue at this moment, jajajajaja, what a joke.

I'm looking at the Vegas roster and there's not a lot of pitching there..... I thought the Mets had all this pitching?  Where is it?  Why can't they call up Montero?  What's the wait?  Everything, absolutely everything with this team requires wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth.  It needs to be perpetually analyzed, mulled over, reviewed and pondered.  I'm really beginning to despise Alderson.

@Zach Ripple  If you thought the bullpen was a strength, then you have some serious problems my friend....

Every one of the names you just mentioned were and remain complete question marks, with almost no major league track record. Injuries are literally going on all around the league as we speak David Robertson is out, tons of people with Tommy John, how did you not see this coming??

@Macacawitz  Generally agree with this. Too much pressure on this blog to rush prospects who are not MLB ready. Rushing the youth is generally not the answer to an injury.

@mrroper  Just as well. Would have been a horrible pickup. There's reasons the Yankees released him, and it's not because the already have the best infield in baseball.

A downgrade, IMO, in just about every way.

@bingmets  SP has been good. RP has been bad. Gotta hold him responsible for both, so it's a wash?

@stemog  Maybe the Yankees didn't like the color of the garbage pail the Mets would have traded for him.

He was waiting to see how things shook out.

But seriously, no loss this time.

@GhostofCasey Shoulder injuries are still the worst for pitchers: rotator cuff, labrum, anterior capsule, and arthritic A-C joint. They are all hard to recover from and return to pitch, harder than most elbow injuries short of an arthritic elbow like Koufax had. The shoulder is just more complex and harder to restore pre-injury strength and motion than the elbow.

If you're blaming the Mets medical staff for a pinched nerve in a minor leaguer, you deserve to be laughed at.

@Macacawitz  Montero's a starter so this wouldn't help anyway. We have pitching in our system, but not a ton of MLB ready pitching in our system, unfortunately.
