Travis d’Arnaud is ALWAYS with John Buck

The Mets acquired both Travis d’Arnaud and John Buck in exchange for R.A. Dickey in December.

This Spring, the Mets have put Buck and d’Arnaud next to each other in the clubhouse at Tradition Field…

All of the catchers work together in drills during workouts, but Buck and d’Arnaud are always paired up and working together…

They work in the same group in the batting cage, as well as the same time when catching bullpen sessions…

They even sign autographs for the fans together…

It has been fascinating to listen to the coaches talk to both Buck and d’Arnaud so far in camp. Coaches tell d’Arnaud to watch Buck work on a drill, and I’ve often heard coaches tell d’Arnaud to watch and listen to Buck as he works out in drills.

I spoke with Bob Geren about the relationship between Buck and d’Arnaud, and Geren has been real impressed with how Buck has worked closely with d’Arnaud so far this Spring.

“Usually in baseball you find one extreme or another,” Geren explained. “You’ll see situations where the veteran is more worried about himself than anyone else. Or, you have a veteran that will go out of his way to help another player. That is what we are experiencing here with John. That’s a wonderful situation to have as a coach. He’s been great so far.”

As I wrote earlier this week, it’s clear Buck is here to be more than just a placeholder for d’Arnaud. He is here to produce, but he’s also here to mentor d’Arnaud and teach him the ropes. d’Arnaud has told me he is someone who loves to just soak in information, and Buck has told me d’Arnaud is like a sponge in terms of how he is constantly seeking and digesting information.

At some point this season, both of them will be on the big league roster, and I can’t wait to see how the relationship has evolved by then…
