This is a simple decision for the Mets, if they are smart. They should announce that Mejia has won the competition to be the #5 starter (which is obvious) and they are adding Dice-K to the 40 man roster as insurance for Jon Niese (in effect, the #6 starter).

8. d'Arnaud - C

How in the F'ing hell is Mejia vs. Dice-K for the fifth spot even a discussion?  Jesus this organization drives me nuts!

how in the heck is Ike tired and Beat up he just missed an entire Spring training upside( HA HA HA) or not. The Organization's treatment of him dragging him through the mud is starting to show through..Right or wrong the damage has been done to him Begging to for a trade!!!also done to Tajeda as well how do they expect people to excell. or have a chance. when they destroy them at every turn.. to make themselves look good..

If Mejia is ready for the majors I'd try him. If they think he needs more seasoning, go with Dice-K. I don't really care too much either way.

Ike Davis needs to get CUT or TRADED. Enough is enough. This is the last type of person that you want on a team.

There a competition going on and he takes himself out of the game after 4 innings because he felt tired. Are you kidding me.

Can they save some of these runs for the regular season !!

Mejia pitched 5 innings, 2 hits, 6 strikeouts and 1 earned run. That was against most of the Nats starters. That should send Dice K his walking papers.

it looks like Tejada and Duda have come back down to earth, Ike too in the other game, no hits! the three of them are so inconsistent and really need to go!

IDK about you guys but for some reason I dont trust Parnell to close out games especially against contenders

Time for the captain obvious statement of the day....

Maybe Parnell's dip in velocity will be just what he needs to finally learn how to PITCH as opposed to just throwing (a la Armando Benitez).  He started it last year but....

" He's [Matt Harvey] Josh Johnson, 5 years ago isn't he?"  - Ron Darling

I don't know about anyone else, but this convo stung a lil bit.  JJ was a beast 5 years ago and now he's on his 3rd team since then, and now pitching in virtual Siberia.  And with the Mets' luck with pitchers...oy...

It's strange though that ike would be taken out of a spring training game after 4 innings when he supposedly needs at bats.  Maybe it's nothing (this is the Mets after all).

why dice k over Jenry is a mystery to me.

It's nice to see insurance pay off: If you walk Wright, you get a 2-run Homer from Granderson.

Rubin is claiming something is up with Ike.  He "departed" after 4 innings of the split squad game against Atlanta.  No word on whether it's injury related.

I haven't seen enough from Mejia to warrant giving him ANY major league rotation spot at this point.  He hasn't shown he can stay healthy, and that's probably the most important thing you need out of a 5th starter.  Innings, not questions.  He has 9 innings this Spring.  Terry hasn't gotten him innings, so thats a bad job.  But he might have gotten hurt.  Again.

At least Dice-K can pitch every 5th day, and his last 4 starts last year were great.

One has shown he can do the job.  One not so much.

Dice-K will give you innings.  You don't know what Mejia will give you.  The Mets have enough question marks to fill a op-ed piece.  They need some stability.  mejia needs to show me 2-3 months of consistent production, which I've never seen him do.  Then talk to me.

C.K. Dexter Haven

Nowadays there is no more paying for "veteran experience" or "veteran leadership" specifically when it comes to pitching.  Teams are much more inclined to go with a "youth movement" than run a guy like Dice-K out there every 5th.  Let's be real:  Dice-K much like many of his compatriots, never lived up to his pre MLB hype.  At this stage of his career if he can't produce, he's cut.  What he did last fall notwithstanding...Personally?  I'd rather see Mejia anyway.  Met FO (and injury) has stalled his Met career.   No reason not to let him fly in this yet ANOTHER throwaway season...

Since Dice-K  can opt out if he does not make the team by May 30 and Mejia has way more upside than he does, the sensible thing to do would be to let Mejia start with the 5th Starter job. If he is ineffective and/or injured, they could always bring up Dice-K to replace him, but given Dice-K's limited skill set at this point in his career, why not give Mejia a chance. Mejia definitely looked a lot better today against a respectable lineup than Dice-K has at any point I've watched him pitch this spring.

Are we now allowed to call Murph "The Wizard" after that play??  Well done Murph (we'll gloss over the fact that he was safe...)

Could be that His Valley Fever came back. Once you have it you have it forever.

@Mont5  David Wright, and Adam Rubin, say it's common for the Mets to pull a player in the Spring playing in their 4th straight game.  Not news within the organization.

Evander Smart
Evander Smart

@ponzies86  If Parnell is healthy, he's the least of the Mets problems, and he says he's healthy.  Parnell shouldn't really register on the list of potential problems right now.

Evander Smart
Evander Smart

@C.K. Dexter Haven  With that logic, you could say that about Strasberg, and a bunch of other players.  To compare Harvey to JJ is dumb.

Evander Smart
Evander Smart

@1harris1  According to Rubin, and David Wright, if you play 4 games in a row during the Spring, the 4th day is a half day.  SOP.

Evander Smart
Evander Smart

@1harris1  If Mejia were a hitter, his name would be Ike Davis. There's always a problem with Ike.  Mejia has a problem with his foot today, too.

metsfanman
metsfanman

@Evander Smart Dice-K cannot opt of his contract if he gets sent down until May 30. If Mejia has more upside, why not give him the chance and then if he falters or gets injured in the first couple months they could always bring Dice K up. Dice-K is definitely not part of the Mets' long-term plans. Mejia could be. Time to give Mejia a chance and see what he can do in my opinion.

Marky Mark

@Evander Smart  Why is this needed? if mejia got hurt either lannon would step in or dice-k if he stayed in the minors.. if not someone can certainty give us "innings" comparable to dice-k

ponzies86
ponzies86

@Evander Smart  Dude Mejia has potential to be solid, He was good last season up to that Elbow injury then things went down hill. Mejia over Dice K at this point

1harris1
1harris1

@Evander Smart But Dice K's "innings" aren't any good.  I'd opt for the young guy.  The team isn't going anywhere this season anyhow.

Is also common for a player to try his hardest when there a competition going on.

C.K. Dexter Haven
C.K. Dexter Haven

@Evander Smart    IDK, with as many TJ surgeries as we're seeing...and now SECOND TJ surgeries?  Sure, JJ may be more like AJ Burnett mentally and that's his problem.  But we really don't know for sure how Matt is going to come back from this.  Then again, maybe i'm still suffering from the effects of "Generation K' 18 years ago...

Eric Koeller
Eric Koeller

@Evander Smart @1harris1  what doesn't make sense is then don't make him go all the way to disney for 4 innings...have the half day in PSL and have Duda play the full game vs Atlanta

Evander Smart
Evander Smart

@metsfanman @Evander Smart  So that's the logic?  Give the guy who probably will break down the spot, and jerk around the proven starters?

Based on what?  You keep leaving that part out.

What has he done to earn your trust that he can pitch every 5th day, and the team can trust him to stay healthy, which is the 5th starters primary function.  Get you innings.

Evander Smart
Evander Smart

@ponzies86 @Evander Smart

Has Mejia ever thrown 4 straight quality starts like Dice-K did in September? He went last year 4 starts and his arm exploded.  Mejia is always hurt.  Mejia is having foot problems today.

Potential is what the minors are for.

Evander Smart
Evander Smart

@1harris1 @Evander Smart  His last 4 starts last year were great, so I don't know what you're talking about.

And what has Mejia done to earn a spot?

Evander Smart
Evander Smart

@qualcomm @Evander Smart

Let Mejia earn the spot by pitching well as a starter in the minors. He hasn't even done that yet.  Everybody else does.  What's so special about him?

Dice-K winning his final 3 starts last year served no purpose?  Really?  The Mets had 3 wins to give away last year?  Really?

qualcomm
qualcomm

@Evander Smart I think that's the 5th starters job on a team that's trying to win.  We're trying to develop and everyone was inexperienced at one point.  He has more talent than DiceK and he's younger  with a greater probably of being needed when the wins are valuable.

To me it makes sense to allow him to gain experience now so he has it when needed.  DiceK pitching for us serves very little purpose.  if Mejia get's hurt and he has to fill in, well, there's a purpose.

1harris1
1harris1

@Evander Smart @1harris1 Dice K's been bad this spring, and nobody else was interested in him seeing that he signed as a minor league free agent..  There's no future with Dice K.  This should be a year for developing young players.  Mejia has even been better than Dice K statistically this spring, with today's outing.  He also pitched very well when he was up last season.  He should be the 5th starter, in my opinion.
