I'm not thrilled with d'arnaud either.....I think they were sold a "bill of goods "

Tejada is "hitting" .067.  OQ is at .188.  Seratelli is at .130.  With d'Arnaud at .182 (and Recker also can't hit), this is what the team is looking at for their bottom 3 hitters in the lineup.  And Sandy thinks this team should (Fred thinks they better) win 90 games.  MLB should drug test owners and GMs.  This is ridiculous.

Damn.... Thor faces 6 batters strikes out 4... Our 2015 pitching staff is going to be scary

Montero for 1 batter? Seems strange if the Mets plan to use him as a starter to have him come in mid inning for one batter. Maybe Seattle or Arizona wanted a look at him as a reliever? Just saying.

tejada needs to be sent down, and sign Drew already. screw Q, screw tejada, screw collins.

Running Tejada out there like this, when everything is in his head like it is, is beginning to be just cruel.  Put the kid on a back field with the others his age and let him find himself.

Got to hand it to den Dekker - he came into camp with zero chance of making the roster, and is hitting over .400.

Now I know why Mike Francesa said the Mets are a 65 win team.....OUCH!

Tejada, Davis, Duda and a few others are still with the team when in all reality they should have been  gone by end of 2014.

Don't  blame Sandy, Collins. Blame Fred Wilpon for putting up a team with a $87 ml. payroll and it will stay that way for the next five years.

To those wondering/complaining, Collins has said Tejada will get these next few games at short, but Flores will get more chances there this spring.

@Haig Mathosian  not really thinking "bust" or anything like that just yet...but my eagerness to see Plawecki traded for a shortstop is definitely waning.

@Attorney Pooze Pozi  yanked? Did TC walk out to SS and pull a Gil Hodges on TeNadda? I'm pretty sure he simply took him out of the game like he did to shy other starter

nymess

@Attorney Pooze Pozi most of the lineup gets pulled after 2 or 3 at-bats. would love it to mean something, but I don't think it does.

@Victor Triguero  Not true. Teams are not making trades right now. They are evaluating. There's been 1 trade in the last 9 days. Tejada may start the season but if he plays poorly and Drew is still out there in June it wouldn't surprise me if the Mets sign him then. Or if they make a trade closer to the start of the season. Everyone wants instant gratification - it's just not how it works.

DMMP

@Victor Triguero  Unbelievable, right? I keep thinking similar things about Dice K vs Mejia.

If den Dekker didn't get hurt in triple A last year he probably would have been the one replacing Rick Ankeil and not Largares.

@greekgod The Tampa Bay Rays have the second lowest payroll in the majors

and yet they are highly predicted to win the all mighty AL East division. Would you trade all the Rays players and there salaries for the Mets players and there salaries and be happy with a competitive team with a very low team payroll?

DMMP
DMMP

@greekgod  If the mets could have a mid market... say 115-120 mil payroll (yes, that's "mid-market" now.) None of these debates would be happening.  Simple as that.

@nymess  What about tomorrow? Is Flores busy or something?

rkj473
rkj473

@nymess  Flores has played one game at short so far. He is sure getting a lot of chances. I could understand if Terry was alternating with Flores and Tejada at short. There is no need to play  Q at short.

vimets
vimets

@Haig Mathosian Niese, Gee and Wheeler have all stated that's he's an catcher with veteran qualities and really like pitching to him.

DMMP
DMMP

@vimets  This is a completely irrelevant argument. The Rays did what they have done through fantastic drafts, doing poorly for years. (So poorly they were getting top 5 draft picks) and trading talent before they could reach free agency to acquire other good young talent... While signing young talent so early that they are/were making far less than they could end up getting on the open market had they not signed earlier.  Tampa Bay does what they do by having great drafts and a shrewd signing strategy, and recognizing when to give up on talent... to acquire new talent.  Tampa Bay and the Mets are in very different positions, in very different markets.

DMMP

@rkj473 @nymess  Tejada has played some time at 2b before...  How about getting him some time there to get Flores some SS experience, if they INSIST on getting Tejada into the lineup more this spring?  Or... How about NOT playing Q for entire games...  But... this is collins... Who picks favorites and goes against the grain in favor of the guys he likes.

@72tilltc @SuperDuper  Wright was on the trading block? addressing (and rejecting) trade requests offered to your team for your top prospect isn't quite the trading block. i even recall Beltran was offered in a trade involving Wright, Mets rejected that too because of Wright's involvement.

72tilltc
72tilltc

@SuperDuper  Travis is not a cant mniss he was traded twice so they think he can miss. Sandy is trying to justify his trade. The fact is Recker now is the better player.

72tilltc
72tilltc

@SuperDuper  Wrong Wright was held back Super 2 idiots then he was on the trading block the Pirates wanted him for Benson. Instead they traded Wiggy who could have stayed and filled a nice hole at second!!

nymess
nymess

@SuperDuper @nymess  i think we're just going to have to agree to disagree on this one. by the time he made his way through the minor leagues, Wright was a very highly touted prospect. Mets balked at any trade offered their way involving him. had he faltered in his first (partial) season, he still would have been starting 3B the next year. they wouldn't have brought in someone to compete with him.

nymess
nymess

@SuperDuper @nymess  right, you said he hit from the bench. the starting job was his right away. i get what you're saying, but not everyone is like David Wright. very few are.

I think a little more patience is needed for someone in the catcher's role, though.

nymess
nymess

@SuperDuper  unless I'm remembering incorrectly, Wright never came off the bench. he was called up and was the starting 3B right away.

Mets have plenty of problems...I just don't think catcher is one of them right now. They have a pretty damn good fallback option in Plawecki to boot. If one falters, the other should still have enough value to garner a decent return. They're in a pretty comfortable position at catcher right now, which can't be said about many other spots on this team, if any (other than 3B).

nymess
nymess

@SuperDuper @vimets  John Buck had that experience you referred to earlier. so you want an experienced catcher who can lead a staff, but isn't a bum (i.e. can hit). doesn't every team? that's what the Mets see D'arnaud as being in the future, which is why he's become their primary catcher now.

vimets
vimets

@SuperDuper Statistics show that in the 30 games D'Arnaud caught last season for the Mets a very high percentage of borderline pitches were called for strikes rather then balls which in which he had a 60% higher rating then John Buck.

archer41
archer41

@SuperDuper  And for the record, I'd rather spend the team's limited dollars on Drew ($12M) versus C. Young ($7.75) and Colon ($10M).  This team desperately needs hitters.

archer41
archer41

@SuperDuper  I'm not trying to kill d"Arnaud, but simply pointing out the reality of having 3 non-productive, consecutive slots in the batting order.  It's also another reason why Plawecki won't get traded to AZ for a SS.  They really can't afford to let him go until they know what they have in d'Arnaud.  Drew, at least, gives them a professional SS in the order and buys the team more time with d'Arnaud.

vimets

@Victor Triguero My question is, does it take a high team payroll to be competitive?

vimets
vimets

@qualcomm The Rays are not a "once in a blue moon team" for the past six seasons they have averaged 92 wins per with a bottom of the list team payroll.

So again my question is, does it take a high team payroll to be competitive?

qualcomm
qualcomm

@vimets That's a silly point.  Yes, every once in a blue moon a team will be run perfectly and touch a wildcard with a totally green roster.  In case you haven't noticed the Rays don't win titles and they're on an Island down there (payroll wise) with the worst teams baseball has to offer.

For what it's worth, they're at least run by a Mets fan... so i guess it proves we do know better than ownership.

vimets
vimets

@DMMP So you would agree that it doesn't take a high payroll to be competive.

DMMP
DMMP

@vimets  Tampa bay has a far better team than us.  If I didn't make that clear to you. So obviously I would.  Tampa Bay wouldn't be that stupid though.

vimets
vimets

@DMMP Your statement doesn't answer my question.

DMMP
DMMP

@vimets  If the mets were operating like Tampa Bay... we would have traded Reyes at the deadline, traded Wright already, traded murphy already... Probably maximized Ike's and Neises values when they were high and traded them...  All for prospects...  Had even WORSE seasons than we did have over the past few years... But by now, probably be beginning to see an even better team than we have now.  I love Tampa's strategy... I just don't see it working in NY.

DMMP
DMMP

@rkj473 @DMMP  Agreed 100%.  Logic went away from this organization long ago.  Seriously.  Top to bottom.

rkj473
rkj473

@DMMP  I have no idea what Terry is even doing. It doesn't make any sense. You are right, if you are trying to get him reps (even if he is not starting) let him play late in the game. The more reps he has the better you could get a grasp of how successful he can be at the position.

But to only play him one game a short when you clamor he's going to start see more games there is dishonest. Q doesn't need to be playing, you alternate between Tejada an Flores to keep their reps up, it's simple as that.
