“The Detroit Tigers are on the verge of signing free-agent starter Brad Penny to a one-year, $3 million contract.” writes Jon Morosi of FOX Sports.
In addition, Buster Olney of ESPN says Penny can earn an additional $3 million in incentives.
Yesterday, in a chat with Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, Mets GM Sandy Alderson said he still wants to acquire a starting pitcher, but to a similar deal to that Chris Capuano signed last week, which was for one year and $1.5 million with an additional $3 million in incentives.
I wonder now what this deal does for pitchers like Jeff Francis and Chris Young, who the Mets have been more closely linked to this winter.
Penny, who will be 33 in May, made just nine starts for the Cardinals in 2010, going 3-4 with a 3.23 ERA in 55 innings. He missed significant time dealing with a back and lat injury, an injury he sustained in a May start against the Angels in which he hit a grand slam.
