Thoughts on Mets sigining Colon, 1B market and what’s next…

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

The Mets will reportedly sign Bartolo Colon to a two-year, $20 million deal, according to multiple reports. I like it. Again, like Curtis Granderson’s deal, the Mets are going to have to overpay a bit to get better players. It is what it is.

Matt Harvey will miss all of 2014. Harvey may stumble a bit in 2015, which will be normal in his sophomore season, during which Colon will still be under contract. Harvey will hopefully be 100 percent in 2016, at which point Colon will probably be pitching for a new team (either because he was traded or left as a free agent). He’s a nice bridge to get there…

Colon

I still expect the Mets to bring in a couple more pitchers on minor-league deals to compete for the back of the rotation.

The other story in Orlando, as it pertains to the Mets, is all about the market for first base. I’ve heard it called a ‘standoff,’ ‘musical chairs,’ and a ‘merry-go-round,’ as the Rays, Pirates and Brewers look to fill a void with either Ike Davis, free-agent James Loney, or someone from the Mariners, who acquired both Logan Morrison and Corey Hart earlier this afternoon.

I wonder if Seattle is stockpiling players to make a run at Rays LHP David Price, who will reportedly cost a high-impact, controllable and affordable catcher, starting pitcher and/or first baseman? Price’s people have said he will not sign an extension with the Mariners, but they’d have two years to change his mind while keeping him away from the Rangers, who also have interest.

In either case, it sounds to me like the Mets really, really want to trade Davis, ideally for a pitcher, freeing up money to help them make a more substantial run at a free-agent shortstop and bullpen help. However, they’re not going to give him away, and they can always cut him in Spring Training for just a $600,000 hit, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney. So, Alderson can always make additions with or without Davis, so long as he gets the OK to exceed his budget.

With Harvey and Hefner gone next year--getting Colon is a good deal!

After the Colon signing, I think it is possible that the Mets could make a play for Stephen Drew though it might be contingent on them finding the right trading partner for Murphy and Davis as MetsBlog has reported, which would free up 80% of the salary that would go to Drew. I'm not saying it will happen, but it is now in the realm of possibility. The Red Sox, the only team most often rumored to resign Drew, really don't need him with Boegarts ready and Middlebrooks at third. If the Mets do sign Drew ($30-$33 million for three years should do it), he would be a good fit. He is a strong defender and a rare left-handed hitter at SS with some power. He has been injury prone in his career, so durability is the only real knock on the guy. Here's what their lineup would look like with Drew:

1. Eric Young, Jr. (2B)

2. Stephen Drew (SS)

3. David Wright (3B)

4. Curtis Granderson (LF)

5. Chris Young (RF)

6. Lucas Duda / Josh Satin (1B)

7. Juan Lagares (CF)

8. Travis D'Arneud (C)

That is not Murder's Row, but it is a solid ML lineup with good left-handed/right-handed balance of power, speed, and patience and one of the best defensive teams they've fielded in a long time. If 2014 is about winning, as Alderson has said, they must relegate Tejada to his proper role as a backup middle infielder for SS and 2B who could be a late inning defensive replacement for EY at 2B and start at SS against a tough LH SP to give Drew a day off.

Yes Cerrone, in 2016 Colon at the young age of 354 will still be pitching.

Nick Sciarratta

yes he's old, yes hes overweight, yes hes had PED issues, but hes durable and a cy young winner whose veteran leadership will just help wheeler, montero, thor. Mets fans be happy with the solid move and be glad Sandy spent some money rather than sign another Shaun Marcum. And yea we gave him 2 years but he should be our 3 or 4 next year if our pitching develops like its supposed to

Do you guys really think that making Colon swing a bat is a good idea. And if he gets a hit now we have to cross our fingers that he won't get hurt running to 1B.

OK, so this is just from the bleachers - there is no chance this kind of thing actually happens in real life (unfortunately).  Blow up the budget a little...

Tulowitzki for Noah, Arnaud, Davis,Degrom, Flores..... (3rd team involved to take Davis)......

Anytime you trade a superstar you don't get full value in return because of the salary you are trading also.... but would Rockies think about it?  Top catching prospect, top pitching prospect, Davis, another solid pitching prospect, and Flores (whatever he's "worth")?

Fun to think about.....

Mets are going to have to sign another veteran spanish player so that Colon could have somebody to talk to.

If it were up to me..3 things. ONE- DREW.  I know we will overpay for Drew. It is gonna happen. He's solid, not amazing, but much better than other FA options. But I would rather do that then trade ANY SP's for simple fact that we look deeper than we have in FOR EVER. I wanna see these guys in action this year. TWO- Trade Davis. If TB will do Joyce for him you do that in a HEARTBEAT. Then you can seriously OVERLOAD lefty bats vs RHP's. If that means we take AB's away from Lagares I think we can deal. and THREE- Santana home discount considering what we have paid him compared to innings worked. Will he? Likely no. But I would try. So lineup vs the REAL tough, TIER ONE RHP's if we trade Davis for Joyce and sign Drew.

Lineup vs TOP RHP's

Is Colon the best the Mets could do. Really really c'mon now.

Anyone realize that all we did was replace Byrd's production with Granderson and Harvey's production with Colon? We haven't really gotten that much if any better with these two signings.

Evan Abramson
Evan Abramson

Anyone listen to the baseball writers? There is NO interest in Murphy at all.  No one wants Davis for more than a bag of balls.  We will not get anything of substance for either one.

IDK about Drew he wants alot and his production is no where near the money he'll be making

Evan Abramson

People on here are too funny.  Can someone remind the Mets and this is NY? Grandy signing is fine.  Does anyone think that spending 20 million on Colon is putting us over the top? Ive waited long enough to build a winner.  Say what you want about the Yanks but they spend money on proven star players.  We have 1 active and one on the IR.  Maybe Wheeler steps up.  No one else on our team would start in the AL East.  This is a damn shame.  I bleed orange and blue and I cant take all of these projects.  Spend the money or get out of the business. We are not San Diego or Tampa bay.

Michael Hennessy
Michael Hennessy

mlbtraderumors.com is saying that Heyman reported the Yanks shot down the Reds when they offered Phillips for Gardner. If that is true I wonder if we can get Phillips with a deGrom and Den Decker package. They get the CF they are looking for and a young pitcher. Make that move than package Murphy with Davis for prospects to open up money and sign Drew for SS.

Trade pitching strength for Cespedes and let the games begin

If the mets really want to compete and be legit contenders then...

Sign SS Drew to a 2/22m

Sign RP Grant Balfour/Chris Perez 2/8m

Trade 1B Ike Davis to Brewers for RHP

Tyler Thornburg

Sign a couple bench guys/pen arms to minors deals

You would add another 15m to the payroll.

Drew will make 10m this year and Perez will earn 3m. Plus subtract 4 m for Ike.

The payroll will be about 95m

Rob O'Rourke
Rob O'Rourke

Regardless Chris young is so far the most worthless waste of money by any team this off season.. Could have got Hart and Morse for that price ! Now we have one really bad player instead of one really good and one good. Such a bad business team!

@Mont5 All he has to do is bunt.  No one is asking the guy to swing, just pivot on his back foot and tap the ball.

If the Mets have 40 wins at the All-Star break, watching him bat will be the only thing worth going to the ballpark to see.

@foley I'm gonna pretend I didn't see this. That along with TUL and his contract we are trading one of our top 2 starter prospects, our catcher for the next decade, defgrom, flores, and davis? Speechless. lol

thewizard7

@Bryan McEntee Very simplistic way of looking at it.  Curtis Granderson is better than Marlon Byrd.  Byrd had a nice year, but it is an anomaly compared to the rest of his career.  In his last two full-seasons, Granderson had 40 HRs and 100+RBIs.  He was a legitimate MVP candidate.

Colon is not replacing Matt Harvey.  He is adding a quality pitcher to the rotation.  If you're looking to replace what Harvey was, an improved Wheeler could do that.  I also think you can reasonable expect Niese and Gee to improve.  Dont forget Gee started last yr very poorly and Niese was on DL

I think Chris Young is a lot better than the likes of Andrew Brown and Colin Cowgill.

The Mets are making themselves incrementally better up and down the rester...  Still a lot of work to be done, but the Mets right now are better than they were last yr.

We can keep Murphy until he retires..

Great news!

@Evan Abramson I guess, if you're an avid "listener" to the baseball writers, then you obviously know that Adam Rubin himself, has reported that the Mets are being "reasonable" in their demands for Ike. And, teams are just pursuing Loney first. Right?

@Evan Abramson Read much?  There is plenty of interest in Murphy but not Dylan Dundy type interest

MetsFan1962
MetsFan1962

Just maybe an Omen not finding trade partners for Davis and Murphy. Personally, I do not want to see Murphy traded. He was our second best hitter in 2013. Ike on the other hand is another story. Could that Valley Fever be blamed for his miserable season? I don't know the answer but I feel Ike (if not traded) is going to turn it around.

Evan Abramson
Evan Abramson

@ponzies86 Exactly my point.  and then the Mets will sign him and try to make him a HUGE signing.  He isnt Cano, Ellsbury or even McCann for that matter.  Enough with the second tier guys.

Nick Sciarratta

well said, we can't complain about not spending money and then complain AGAIN when we do. Its New York, $20 isn't that big of a deal, just hasn't happened in a while

Is rather the prospects to be honest. Not nearly as big as difference between Phillips and Murphy as the perception.

I'd be happy with this. I'd rather Chris Perez at the 2 for 8...Balfour should get more and sounds like he's going to Baltimore.

@Kyle Suta Drew wants 3/36 minimum, Balfour wants 3/30 & The Brewers rejected the Davis for Thornburg proposal.  What do ya do now?

Carlos Jose Diaz
Carlos Jose Diaz

@Rob O'Rourke I believe that Chris Young will be a sleeper pick to comeback better than before.  Something tells me that with granderson and lagares, We will hit .250+ 20 HR and 80-90 RBIs.  He just needs the right environment and you can't be down on this player without giving him a full season without platooning him

ac0814
ac0814

They could produce similar numbers next season. I'm not as down on the Young signing as some are.

If Young hits .260 20 80 would you be happy?

foley

@rdogg1976 @foley

Wow.  I'm speechless.  You guys overvalue prospects, with all due respect.  Not one of these players has done anything on the field - yet (with all due respect to the monumental hole in the lineup Davis has been recently) - for one of the best players in baseball at one of the toughest positions to fill that is in his prime.

Forget about names, prospects, guys you read about in the papers, blah blah blah.... how many more wins would the Mets have?

rdogg1976
rdogg1976

@davklotz Thing is i'm not talking more of what I wish but more reality. I only mention Joyce because news is that's what Rays offered possibly for Davis. Otherwise, we won't be going for any more OF's I hear. Trust me if I heard a PEEP we would revisit the Nelson Cruz idea and send Chris Young to a 3rd World Nation I am ALL for it. Unfortunately with E Young Jr as a backup..OF, IF, everything, 90% of what I hear we may do have nothing to do with OF anymore (except Joyce). Like I said, Granderson, Cruz at the corners would MORE than have made up for Lagares lack of bat (but soon REPEAT gold glove) in center. If we did that? I wouls say TEACH E Young Jr SS platoon with Tejada. Duda, Murphy, Tejada/Young Jr, Wright as IF. Again, I wish.

Mont5
Mont5

He will be 41 in May. Can't see him to continue putting up the numbers he did. Unless he goes back to PED

hlow24
hlow24

@Evan Abramson @ponzies86 signing "1st tier" free agents is usally more hit than miss, by the time they make it to free agency, you're paying more for past performance than future production.  It's best to build from within with your homegrown stars and supplement with pieces here and there, occasionally make a big trade/signing if it truly makes sense.  What big name/big money guy out there right now makes sense in terms of a signing or could possibly be a trade target?

Rob O'Rourke
Rob O'Rourke

260 20 and 80 lolololol !!! Yes I would be very happy if he put up # hitter type numbers!! Lol come on man.. Please let's revisit this in August! My guess is 226--12--55- ..solid numbers for a 7-8 hitter who plays maybe ss with a gold glove and steals 20+bases.. But not for a avg glove Rfielder who they expect to bat 5-6 !!! For 7.25mil guarantee and no incentives !!

Tectaru
Tectaru

In 7 full seasons, he's only come close to hitting .260 once.  He's likely what he is, .230/.330/.430.  Also probably going to have a tough time getting 10 HRs.

Rob O'Rourke
Rob O'Rourke

For combined 8mil we could have gotten Morse and Hart! Both have career 275+ ba and both will hit more Hrs. Cyoung will bat 230 w/11 hrs he is the bad move Sandy made. I like Grandy .. Colon is so so ! But Young is at beat a 3/4 of who shouldn't bat above 7th! Morse and Hart are 5-6 hitters who can play 1b an Rf and hit for avg and power we paid double what should have for Cyoung.. Bottom line worst signing

Michael Hennessy
Michael Hennessy

@ac0814 I'm not high on it but I'm also not down on it. What I don't like is the on of K's he brings to the table. What I do like is his defense, he can steal some bags, and can give us 20 plus HR's. If the Mets can get him back to hitting his .235ish avg vs instead of the .200 he hit last year it will be a decent signing

metfan8669
metfan8669

@hayden @NYMetsLander @Bryan McEntee - You can't predict all the winners now.  Teams gel.  Like Boston and Cleveland.  Other teams don't reach their potential, like the Nats last year.  -- The Mets are young and lots of them can have better years next year.   Ya gotta believe!!!

Rob O'Rourke
Rob O'Rourke

Guys we have a guy who can hit 225 and 15hrs ! His name is Lucas duda and we pay him under 1mil$ not 7.5!! Lol awful signing!!!!!

Rob O'Rourke
Rob O'Rourke

If he hits 20hrs w/60 rbis and hits 240 he is slighty less productive than the worst season hart had in his first years .. So basically we r hoping for him to be as good as the worst season hart has ever had for 2.25mil more than hart got ..it was a bad signing..that's all.. I know we want I to be good but it was bad .. He panicked and was sold cyoung by his agent for way too much money .. No incentives.. All guarantees with no 2nd yr option. They said name ur price we have no conditions. Lol atleast hart had incentives !!! This will be cyoungs last year in MLB and we gave him a nice retirement bonus..he will be on bench or injured by July !
