Dillon Gee 10 (Baron)

This week’s and next week’s Mets rotation

The Mets say Zack Wheeler will start against the Nationals on Tuesday.

Dillon Gee will start Wednesday against the Astros.

Bartolo Colon will skip facing the Nationals again and instead pitch in a minor-league game Thursday.

Jenrry Mejia will pitch Friday and Daisuke Matsuzaka will start Saturday, in Montreal, against the Blue Jays.

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

In other words, Gee is likely to pitch Opening Day, followed by Colon. It’s going to be a long gap between starts for Wheeler, so I wonder how the team will handle him? Also, this more or less indicates Matsuzaka is destine for the rotation, with Mejia going to Triple-A, though that has yet to be officially announced.

It figures. Maybe we should send the Wilpons to AAA. Wilmer Flores should be the starting SS and Mejia should be the #5 starter.

The question becomes, can Gee do well enough on Opening Day to secure a victory for the Mets, who, by the way, have by far the best Opening Day record in all of baseball!

Yada, yada, yada......... We're still looking at 70 - 75 wins with this lineup.  Who starts opening day is really a moot point

I just don't get the Gee for opening day, I understood why it would go to Niese, but after that it needs to be Colon or Wheeler since he is unavailable.  I get the idea of giving it to your veteran and not rewarding Wheeler after a half season under his belt, but how do you do that and put it on Gee instead?

Whatever happened to letting the best pitcher on your staff get the opening day start?  Shouldn't that honor go to Wheeler or Colon this year?

This whole pitching thing is like the Flushing version of Groundhog Day. How many ineffective veteran starts did we have to watch before Harvey and Wheeler made an appearance?  Dice-K would have get lit-up like the late Jose Lima to get bumped from the rotation. And even then it's . . . dicey.

Watching the Baseball America top 50 prospect ranking on MLB Network.  d'Arnaud is #38, three spots behind Yankees catching prospect Gary Sanchez at #35, who's also 4 years younger.  So far I haven't seen any Gary Sanchez watches on any of the Yankee blogs.  Times up, it's time for d'Arnaud to stay healthy and produce or expect the piling on to commence.

what are you guys worried about...if dice-k is so bad, he will not last...he is a placeholder

"...this more or less indicates Matsuzaka is destine for the rotation, with Mejia going to Triple-A..."

The Mets once again make the wrong decision and favor an ineffective veteran. Shocking.

This front office is a reactive one. They refuse to make personnel decisions until they have no other choice. They won't be happy until they've lost a couple games with Dice-K on the mound. Sure, it's just a couple games. But when you add up all the other stupid decisions that cost them a game or two, you get 75 win seasons.

For all the pitching this team says it has, we will start the year with Colon (40+), Dice K (a wash-up) and Niese (injury waiting to happen) in our starting rotation.  At least in the past when the team was bad you had the young guys to watch grow - we don't even have that.  Meija and Flores got screwed.  The Fans get screwed.

I'd like to see Wheeler seperate Gee and Colon in the rotation.

Is it definite that Terry will be batting the pitcher in the 8th spot this year? I love this idea, giving Wright and Granderson more RBI opportunities.  The question is, who will bat ninth?

Mejia should be the 5th starter, When healthy he is much better then Dice K and he's having a much better Spring Training then Dice K

It will be an utter shame if Mejia doesn't make this team for a crap retread like Dice-K.

@A Raymond Cox If Mejia spends 30 days in the minors he isn't arb eligible next year and Dice-K pitched well today and could be a trade chip mid-season. On top of the fact that Mejia likely has an innings limit this year given how few innings he has thrown recently and his injury history.

@chasesimms  What a defeatist attitude - it's a brand new season with new faces and more pitching depth than ever before, anything can happen

@James Gee finished off the season last year stronger than anyone else. Sub 3.00 ERA after May. He outperformed Niese and Wheeler by far, really he should have been the starter all along. Only him and Colon really deserved it. Wheeler has the upside, but hasn't earned it at all.

On a side note, how much do you think Oakland is regretting letting Colon go so cheap now that their ace is out for the season with TJ...

@James  The only problem I have with Wheeler is control and I can see him struggling at opening day with all the pressure.

ponzies86
ponzies86

@joeknix  If Gee was struggling this spring then I see Wheeler getting the start but Gee been fine

ponzies86
ponzies86

@joeknix  Gee been good this Spring and he's been on the time longer So if Niese dosnt get the nod give it to Gee at least for this year

@mets2014  It's just something to bitch about.  Dice K could throw a no hitter and the posts would still want Mejia to make the next start.

James

@beerfinger  Of course, that is instead of a 78 or 79 win season...

@ny12jets  DUde Colon gets a pass even at 40 he is still a high end pitcher just look at his record for the past 3 years but Dice K I could live without

@ny12jets  The Mets have always been pitching-rich. Remember the glory days of Seaver, Matlack, and Koosman?

@ponzies86  What is the harm in sending Mejia to Vegas to start the season?  Lets see if he can stay healthy for longer than a few starts.  Meanwhile avoid pitching in 40 degree weather.  Dice K pitched well down the stretch, and looks decent this spring. It's a long season, and if Mejia shows he can pitch well and stay healthy, I'm sure he's going to get his shot.

@BringBackDaveTelghe  Don't make judgements based on "who makes the opening day roster" it doesn't work like that.

Meija pitched 50 innings last year. I believe the plan is to have him go to AAA, warm weather, get his rhythm going, let Dice K struggle through the 1st month or so of cold weather, snow, rain-outs all that early season stuff and then call up Meija and others come June.  Since the Mets would love to get Meija from 50- at least 100 innings it will take management.

Kevin VanTassell
Kevin VanTassell

I like Mejia and I think he could be a good starting pitcher, but let's remember he has had injury issues and has never started even 20 starts in a single season, so like Syndergaard let him go to AAA and control his starts and innings.

The seasons have been moot..for a while now.

@ponzies86 @James  I get it, I really think the spot should be Colon's with Niese out.  I think this comes off as management trying to find anyone to be opening day starter instead of Wheeler.  If it is Niese you are rewarding the veteran guy from our team, if it is Colon you are putting him at the top of the rotation and he is your big signing guy, but Gee?  I am not sure that makes sense if I am Wheeler.

ponzies86
ponzies86

@lindro88 @mets2014  Mejia is the future Dice K isnt, I just find it laughable that this is even a debate for the 5th spot when clearly Mejia won it, Dice K will get knocked around again once the season starts and give up at least 4 runs a game, So Im guessing you guys are fine with that..

beerfinger
beerfinger

If you really believe that, don't bother watching the games.

BringBackDaveTelghe
BringBackDaveTelghe

@Kevin VanTassell Why?  Why not capitalize and take advantage of his innings while he is healthy?

We all know what Dice-K is.  A 5 to 6 innings pitcher who works slowly and at best would have an era a little north of 4.

@mets2014 @qualcomm @ponzies86 @lindro88  Are we sure that is in play here, he has been up for years, I really don't think he is a super-2 guy.  I think this comes down to the Mets think Dice-K might be able to get a bit of value here and be tradebait.  If that does actually pan out then I will be okay with this move as turning Dice-K into some piece of the puzzle would actually be worth Mejia in the minors for a month.  I just don't get why they think that is possible.

Delaying his FA affects his trade value. Teams are always looking for good young pitching that is under team control long term.
