This is a huge series for the Mets, says Collins

In response to whether the Mets will be buyers or sellers before the end of July, Sandy Alderson told reporters this past weekend that a lot will be learned during the team’s current 10-game home stand in advance of the All-Star break.

The Mets begin a four-game series at home Monday against the Braves, after which they host the Marlins for three games.

“It’s huge for us,” Terry Collins said about facing Atlanta. “It’s a big series.”

If they cut bait with CY and Abreu,  traded Colon, Murphy and included some pitchers from the minors (not Thor)  for young bats, actually played the kids and were just honest about the need to continue to rebuild I would respect SA/TC a lot more and have more interest in going to Citi to see the kids then i do now. Unfortunately SA and TC don't understand that and want to continue to play NY fans who are among the most knowledgeable and passionate as stupid.

These next 2 series are definitely important, but there is still 1/2 a season to go. The trade deadline should be approached the same every year - if a potential trade makes our team better, then we should explore that trade. Unfortunately, I think we should sell, this year, and continue to stock pile pitching.

I am so sick and tired of Sandy trying to play all of us for suckers.  It's a huge series because.....?  Because it'll go a long way in determining if the Mets are buyers or sellers at the deadline?  NOOOO   Because the Mets have a LEGITIMATE shot to make some hay in the division vs. a couple teams in front of them in the standings?  NOOOO.   Or is it because these are divisional games that usually pay out, but based on this last weekend's attendance Sandy needed Terry to gin up some fake importance.  If Sandy REALLY thought this was a huge series or a year in which the Mets could make a run, he'd go make a deal for some offense.  I'm really tired of Sandy...

If Cy and Lagares play we lose.Lagaras stinks.Don't be surprised if Tajada end season with better AVG.

One thing that Terry is an expert at is stating the obvious.

Please. These games are about as meaningful for the Mets as spring training split-squad exhibition games. That's about as much as I care either way whether they win or lose. I'm tuned out...again.

If this is such a big series, explain why CY is in the lineup?

They should be lucky to split against Atlanta, but that's not going to be enough.to do anything. A sweep would be nice but then they would probably get swept by the Marlins. They haven't looked like a team that could sweep a series since Philly and they didn't win all those games either.

Mets have above 500 pitching, bullpen, CF, RF, 3B, 2B. Below avg SS, adequate 1B. Starting to get something at C. This team should be closer. What's the difference then? TC - poor, inconsistent lineups, poor in-game management, poor handling of pitchers, fundi's and handling of young talent. How many wins has he cost?

"Buyers or sellers" ? Please... If this team gives up any prospects for a short term solution because we took 3 of 4 from Atlanta in July..? Wow I'd be pretty Pissed

If the Mets win 2 games from the Braves I'd be surprised.  If they were to win more than 2 I'd be shocked.

If Sandy and Terry and the Mets think they are anywhere close to the Braves level, they are seriously deluded.

If the 10 game homestand is a barometer for whether the team will be a buyer or a seller, why can't it be the barometer on Terry Collins? I mean, if we are seller's at the trade deadline, it is a sign we have given up on this season and are looking toward next year. It should also be the final straw for TC. Fire him, let Wally manage the team the rest of the year and plan for next year.

@mets63 You can't be serious. Lagares is outstanding in CF. Keith H and Ron D. say so, if they say so, you might want to agree with former big league stars.

@mets63  Have you never heard Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling talk about the young Juan?  Those guys know a thing or five thousand about baseball. They constantly have verbal orgasms about Lagares.

Otherworldly defender who bats 287 is horrible. U know baseball very well.

@brian2740  Please.  Do you really think these games matter much at all?  That the Mets have any shot at all of competing for a postseason slot?  You're seriously drinking the Sandy and Terry Kool-Aid.

@jsecurity The endless rotating of players with TC's "hot hand" approach hasn't worked.  The overmanaging and endless lineup changes have hurt the team.  SA should be concerned about this and even hinted that the record should be better than it is, which to me is a veiled shot at TC.  We'll see if anything sinks in.  Sadly, I want Backman as manager and that doesn't seem realistic given this regime.

@Ant Hanni Trade the high-salary short term contract guys for prospects.  Trade some prospects for major league talent signed to longer term deals.

@hankincolo @Mike Dell Italia Yes please. No Soriano. He's not part of the next good Mets team. From this point forward, it needs to be all about playing guys that could potentially contribute to a playoff team.

@archer41 @jsecurity Remember - Backman managed a lot of these guys in Brooklyn and Vegas and their fundies suck!

@Steven Matregrano @Rimo Chaloney  And if we were so evenly matched (or better in some departments as you say) with the Braves, we wouldn't be 10 games behind them or 10 games under .500.  We're over halfway through the season.  If you can't see this Mets team is not a good team, then I don't know what to say to you.

Mike Dell Italia

@Steven Matregrano @Mike Dell Italia All i know his batting average has been around the 290 mark all season, so its not misleading to me

Make yourself feel as wonderful as you want Steven, calling yourself a real fan, and defining everyone else as not being real fans.  I too am a real fan and watch the Mets every night.

And nice going on the civil discourse, telling me to shut the hell up.  Nice.

Good point. Perhaps Collins doesn't pay attention to fundies. He certainly doesn't hold anyone accountable when they screw up.

@mets63 Actually, even baseball fans are allowed to respect a player enough to spell his name correctly.
