According to a recent, interactive report by Facebook and the New York Times, the Yankees are the preferred team everywhere in New York City, and nearly everywhere in the U.S., over the Mets, tops in more than 98 percent of ZIP codes nationwide >> Read more in the New York Times.

30% Loyal Yankee fans, 30% Loyal Met Fans, & 40% swing to whichever team has been better over the last several years.

You know what I have to say about this poll? LET'S GO METS!

Aesthetically they have the best hat logo, that doesn't clash with adult clothing sensibilities in general dress attire. However, new york baseball fans are largely also "leading brand," people, and with modern internet failure shaming, the mets have been associated with inferiority for years.

If the Yankees had not been so successful over the last 20 years, the mets fans wouldn't be so outnumbered, but the yankees bring in the casual fans in much greater turn outs, economically  transcending the game.  They are the balance to the cubs who maintain popularity without winning.

Might be tough to overcome, but really we mostly have to appreciate if the fail stigma lets up a bit, rather than looking for converts.

That's what happens when you go to the playoffs once every ten years.

Give it two years,

This report is hardly representative of the whole country.  It only accounts for those on Facebook who have "liked" a team and have listed their zip code.

Good to know.  Any idea what that bright orange ball in the sky is?

Yet, as I walk through NYC, I see more Mets, Boston, and wardrobe-related caps than Yankee caps...

It's:

25% Mets

25% Yankees

25% Other

25% Bandwagon

Winning changes everything. The sad thing is that queens/long island dont event slightly skew more towards  the Mets than the rest of the city.. The Mets need a star that the city can get behind and wins.

The Mets should also adopt the mantle of the "Peoples Team". i hate Yankee stadium as its geared to the corporate deep pocketed fans. I was surprised how full the park was over the weeekend. With ticket prices so low, the park was quite full and full of mets colors I am pretty sure teh Wilpons were quite happy with the turnout. maybe its time to offer more reduce price tickets and fill up the Park. with $22 for parking, $8-12 for beer and other concessions, the Wilpons can make money. Cheaper ticktes equals more cash for other concessions. More fans at the games and more younger fans at the game creates future fans especially if the team plays well.

The last thin is they have to produce more offense at home. Pitching wins championships but offense gets you through the year. The outfield configuration just kills hr's and makes the team seem so anemic. Teams like the 85-90/98-00/06-08 could score a lot of runs and there was never a feeling that heteam was out of it. Now days at Citi if the mets are down 3-0 it feels liek its 6-0. That has to change.

Everyone likes to say that Mets fans have more character, and are more loyal, etc.  The truth is Mets fans are dopes.    The team has not been actively trying to win a championship for at least 4 straight seasons now.

Why would you invest your time in a product like that?   I have only so many hours per week after work and I'm not going to spend it deeply invested in a team that doesn't have the same goals I do.

Their goal has been to cut payroll, and field a competitive enough team to generate enough revenue to make debt payments.  That's it.

A well run franchise seeks to make money by winning, and therefore earning extra attendance and the financial rewards of postseason games.   Not the Mets.

The Mets are the private equity, load up on debt and consolidate/cut payroll in order to increase the bottom line, of baseball teams.

I like baseball now, not the Mets.  And I'm a happier fan for it.

This is sad.  There isn't a single zip code that the Mets are the preferred team.  Not even in Queens.

The Mets had it until Wilpon screwed it up. Thanks Freddy and Jeffie

So what. People shop at Walmart more than they do at Nordstrom. That doesn't make Walmart better. The Yankees have a broad fanbase. The Mets have a deep fanbase.

The map just confirms my suspicion that Cubs fans are the biggest A-holes in the universe.

Yankees merchandising is spread all around the world. I am Italian and I see many people wearing Yankees hats in my town. Most of them dont even know what is baseball about. I am proud to be a Met, maybe the only one in Italy.

Once Mets start winning, not only games.. but a World Series it will all change.  There are a lot of Bandwagons out there

So glad we had this in-depth statistical analysis available.

I've always said of the 8 million NYC residents, 2 million are Yankee fans, 2 million are Met fans, and 4 million are fair weathers. Those of you like me who were around in the '80's remember you couldn't find a Yankee fan then.

Interesting, but far from shocking. People can root for whoever they want to. I am sure I'm not the only person who gets razzed wherever they go for being a Met's fan, because the world seems to be Yankees fans. Whatever. Let's Go Mets!

haha yeah, mostly because Yankee fans care to fill out these stupid surveys..

It's because the Yankees try to field a winner while the Mets try to find a way to cut payroll and field a fourth place team.

The obvious question is which zip codes fall into that 2% that prefer the Mets.  My guess it that they're in zip codes used by the FBI for their witness relocation program.

(......and there is no more scathing indictment of Wilpon incompetence than the fact that a National League Baseball team in the biggest market in the nation appears no where on the map.  That's hard to do.)

I can't trust these kind of surveys, "preferred" has different meaning for different people. Yankees are a better baseball team, but I love the Mets more than the Yankees. And they probably surveyed people who don't even care about baseball. Of course anyone would pick the Yankees because that's the first baseball team that comes to mind in NY. And have you been to Yankee stadium? Half of the attendees have no clue about how baseball is played. It's just like times square, 80% tourists.

Only the Mets and the Oakland A's have no geographical area where they are the favorite team

Wonder what this map looked like in the 80's.

Haha. This is not news...kind of always felt it's a given. Go to any store that sells team merchandise and just look at the ratio of Yankees to Mets items. Can't even get away from their logo here in Alabama. We were house hunting and in one of the master bedrooms was a big ole Yankees mural. If there was one place where I thought I wouldn't even hear the word "Yankee", it was here in the South, LOL!!

@MetsOregon  Totally true.  Unfortunately, the Mets of the last 5 years feel a heck of a lot more like Walmart than they do Nordstrom's.

@Macacawitz  Sad to say, but i'm guessing that none of those 2% are in Queens. Those zip codes are probably in LI where I have seen the Mets marketing their season tickets aggressively.

@samc Yes, but the point is until the late 90's, New York City was a national league town.  The legacy of the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Giants, and even what the Mets built through the 80's have been sqandered by this inept ownership

How does that compare with approximately 80% empty seats and 100% people unwilling to live with the short term pain of not attending games in exchange for having even a prayer of ousting ownership?

roman411

@mikesml  To further your point...I wonder what this poll would look like after the World Series?  I suspect the "success" % would drop for Yankees and jump for the WS winner.

@roman411 Is it cheating to spend over $90MM on payroll? The Mets have been actively driving fans away, this is a predictable (and rational) result.

Macacawitz
Macacawitz

@Macacawitz  Most people in and around Citifield are recently arrived immigrants.  Their interest in baseball is probably minimal at best.  I'd agree that pockets in Nassau and Suffolk probably hold a larger number of Mets fans.

We could it own it now if the owners would spend. Two years now? Give me a break.
