Ruben Tejada hacks

The return of Ruben Tejada?

According to previous reports, Mets SS Ruben Tejada was told last week that he had lost his starting shortstop job to Wilmer Flores, who had been promoted from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Flores got sick and couldn’t play Sunday. Tejada took over again and has a hit in all three games he has played in place of Flores.

He delivered a bases-loaded walk-off single against the Phillies on Sunday and had a hit and a walk and scored two runs Tuesday against the Yankees.

Despite Tejada’s recent success, Terry Collins said Flores is 100 percent and will start Wednesday at Citi Field.

I've tired of defending Tejada to the masses so lets switch it up.   Drew's not going to happen unless he and BorASS drop his asking price.  If the White Sox actually do release Keppinger, any interest?  I know he's 34 but he's always been able to hit...which seems to be all most of you are interested in.

Let's blame our lack of hitting on our #8 hitter, what a joke, The next guy they'll blame it on will be Lagaras and the when balls slip thru the infield and drop in front or behind our Centerfielder only then will they figure out that if they want a power hitting, RBI team, that they will have to move them to The Stadium in The Bronx! In the meantime the relaty os the situation is we are back in Citi Morgue and those players need to be in our lineup!

what happened to flores starting tonight?

Tejada hit a few line drives the last couple of days and everyone is acting like it's some kind of renaissance....geez.  Flores is hardly the answer at SS, but using him for 6 or 7 innings and using Tejada late in games should work in the short term.

Reminds me of how they handled the Ike Davis/Lucas Duda situation last month

Yeah, good idea TC. Let Flores play SS when you're debuting one of your star rookies  in the biggest stage in baseball, Yankees against the Mets. You sure know who to set up Montero for success by having Flores play short (GULP!)

Wow a hit in three straight games. The MVP drive is on!

slightly OT:

107ABs  .206  1HR  13RBIs  8Runs   26/6 K/BB  .526 OPS

201ABs  .199  4HR  13RBIs  12Runs   42/23 K/BB  .569 OPS

One of these stat lines belongs to the starting C that everyone wants to run out of town, and the other belongs to the SS everyone wants to start....

Nothing wrong w a little competition, whoever hits plays, that goes for the outfield as well.

In the last week or so:

Flores called up and named starting SS despite very little time at the position and everyone saying it's a bad idea

Montero called up to make his ML debut on the biggest stage outside of a playoff game

Mejia moved to the BP and probably about to be named closer

Campbell replacing Satin despite Sandy's beloved Moneyball math

AM I CRAZY, or has Sandy been reading this blog and just decided to throw up his arms and say "OK FINE, GIVE 'EM WHAT THEY WANT AND I'LL WATCH IT ALL BURN!"

PLEASE, NO MORE TEJADA!!!! I'VE SEEN ENOUGH.  THE GUY IS A TRIPLE A SHORTSTOP AT BEST.  WE HAVE SEEN THE BEST HE COULD DO AND IT WASN'T ALL THAT GOOD TO BEGIN WITH.

Ladies and gentlemen...Ruben Tejada averaged .287 over the course of 2 seasons and 800 ABs while playing very good defense.  The offseason preceding, and then during the 2013 season, the Mets FO began a campaign in which:

they called his conditioning and desire to be a starter in to question

questioned his commitment

talked to the PRESS about their displeasure with him

named him the starter while OPENLY courting other SS options

2011 and 2012, Tejada was all the SS the Mets needed but because he had a bad season (and because some of you want to believe every single thing written/said about him) you're trying to run him out of here on the first thing smoking

Personally, I don't find anything wrong with Ruben.  No, he's not going to drive in 60 runs, steal 35 bases and probably won't hit 10 HRs.  But i trust him more than any other SS option right now available to the Mets.  Getting rid of him, JUST to get rid of him is a bit myopic IMO..

Wilmer has to get his chance.  Three games of decent ball from Tejada shouldnt excuse his extended period of suck.

I've been a fan of Tejada since 2010, but even I'm not going to say he's 'back' after 3 days.  I also don't think Flores is ANY kinda solution until he proves over 162 that he has the range for SS and can HIT ML pitching.

As a fan of Ruben's, and the NY Mets, I think the best option for everyone is he's traded in a package (as a defensive backup) for our new SS.  I hope I'm proven wrong and he can return to 2012 form ON THE METS but I honestly think he's been messed around with too much by this FO and manager.

omg it's happening again. every time rt feel the pressure he gets a few hits and saves his job.and everytime he feels no pressure he goes back to his old ways. same goes for duda. mets should learn from their past .

Tejada is not good enough to "Wally Pip" anybody.

But Flores shouldn't get too comfortable either. Just because he's named the starter doesn't mean the Mets won't replace him with a better SS in the future if they can find one.

It's important to know what Flores's bat can do in the bigs to see if he could replace Murph at 2B next year and beyond. Next year is Murph's walk year so he probably gets traded in January

Ruben will return to his old inconsistency ways. Lets see what Flores can provide so we can see what he's got.

No matter how well Tejada is playing lately...it's just too late to hold on as a starter. I think Tejada will be bundled in a trade by the All-Star break. .  Reuben, good luck on your new team, whomever that may be.

Not4Nutten

The bottom line is Ruben is gone, he cant stand Terry and Sandy and the only way to leave is The Ike Davis Way get traded or demoted and traded. He auditioned for The Yankees and zhowed tbem what he's capable of, but his body lanuage says it all! Get me away from TC,SA and The Mets. Good Luck Ruben!

Flores's upside is considerably better than Ruben's. Tejada has had ample opportunities, time for Wilmer to get a shot.

Why does TC keep benching players who are in a hot streak, but never benches a pitcher who starts losing control after 4 innings.

Whatever happened to riding the hot hand? Let Ruben play until his bat cools off. Geez, I can't believe I can actually write that.

@C.K. Dexter Haven Ridiculous on two counts.  The walk rate of Tejada can be thrown out the window.  An 8 hitter in the NL will always get bs walks from intentional walks, or "unintentional" walks that trump it up.

Add in the fact that TdA is going through his first couple hundred ABs in the pros and Tejada has been doing this for years.

@dickeydeep  The Philly and Marlins series were brutal.

Eric Young's an okay player, but the idea that the team was gonna skid upon Lagare's return, you could understand if Sandy did just start plucking blog suggestions at that point.

@dickeydeep  what other moves would u do instead ? Did you honestly bring up Satin ? He is a joke. Even the most amazing eye brows in the world do not make a man a major league player. AAA for life for Satin.

@Jimmy Cruz  .289 in 2012....284 in 2011.  Not good enough?    not sure what you're expecting from a middle infielder..

@C.K. Dexter Haven Tejada's 1st year he batted .213, last year .202 and this year he was batting what a buck 80 before they bought up Flores. This team is not hitting consistently enough to allow Tejada to get going. Between TDA, Tejada and the pitcher it was 3 automatic outs. Honestly Tejada is a utility player or backup. He should not be starting regardless of what he did several years ago. Keep in mind Jason Bay was averaging 31 hrs and over 100 rbi's for several years before joining the Mets. So you can't continue to say hey this player did this a few years ago. This game is about production.

metsjetsdu
metsjetsdu

@C.K. Dexter Haven  35 steals and 10 homers are career numbers for him. He showed in the past he could hit for average and even then it was the most empty average possible. No runs , no steals, no rbis, no homers, just gets on base before a pitcher and plays average defense. I don't want to get rid of him but he has been bad for about a year and a half, on the bench is where he belongs. He wouldn't make most teams AAA squad.

dickeydeep
dickeydeep

@C.K. Dexter Haven  I would rather have his 'single up the middle' contact hitting potential at the plate with men on ANY DAY then anything I've seen from CY or D'arnaud.

Stephen Rojack

@90wins  My thoughts exactly. I dont care if the other guy was told he was starting, Tejada has been hitting, and I want him out there. Plus, Tejada has been making some nice plays at SS. Play the hot hand. I bet Tejada cools off now because we play someone else at SS. So much over management. I scratch my head some times when it comes to Terry Collins and his decision making.

Joseph Zerres

like  a couple of nights ago , when he did not throw out the runner at the plate , but threw to first

metsjetsdu

@C.K. Dexter Haven @Jimmy Cruz  you can't just cherry pick and use his only good offensive stat from those 2 almost full years. Below average runs, steals, homers, and rbis and he has been horrible for a year and a half now, can you tell me his average last year or so far this year ? Terrible, to go along with his terrible speed and run production. Seems like those 2 years may be more of an oddity than normality.

C.K. Dexter Haven
C.K. Dexter Haven

@tango01  Right, but how about a little perspective.  ALL numbers in the 8 hole are empty...because it's the 8 HOLE.  In the NL, his only job is to clear the pitcher's spot and keep the conga line moving.  For whatever reason people have turned it into a run producing spot.  It's not.  it's also not a spot for your better hitters.  My point is simply that peoples expectations of Tejada or the 8 spot aren't realistic.

By the way...his 1st year when he was 20...he WAS Wilmer Flores.  Only at 2B

Evil_MrM
Evil_MrM

@Victor Triguero @C.K. Dexter Haven Isn't Wilfredo Tovar better defensively than Tejada?  I know he's only AA, but he's having a nice season down there, He's 22, I don't see why he's not promoted to AAA ASAP with the idea to get him some time with the big club later this season...

C.K. Dexter Haven
C.K. Dexter Haven

@Victor Triguero  I'm not sure what the issue is but through multiple FO configurations the Mets in the last 10 years seem totally incapable of cultivating quality position players.  Reyes in 03, Wright in 04 and since then the last high quality position player was.....? Carlos Gomez?

I agree, the Mets only SS options shouldn't come down to the incumbent that they're not happy with, or a guy that they as an org, asked to stop playing SS 3 years ago.

metfan62
metfan62

@dickeydeep @C.K. Dexter Haven  D'Arnaud is making all those brilliant scouts look really bad.  He is utterly clueless at the plate...looks at strikes, swings at balls, never drives the ball, falls behind 0-2 seems like every AB.  Pitch calling very ?'able, same with defense.  Fact is, he hasn't done anything well, or even at an acceptable level.  But they have so much invested in this guy...what to do?

Thomas McKeever
Thomas McKeever

@Victor Triguero @Ben FortneyIt really is ridiculous how much rope Tejada was just given with 2 decent games.  2 games preceded by a month of being useless does not mean "he's back". What does that even mean, "he's back". Tejada at the top of his game is still bad.  Which is why we are always so surprised (and make a big deal out of) when he has a bit of success .

C.K. Dexter Haven
C.K. Dexter Haven

@metsjetsdu   Wait, I'm cherry picking the 800 ABs of his quality seasons, but you guys aren't overvaluing the 500 ABs of his bad ones?  That's pretty interesting...

C.K. Dexter Haven
C.K. Dexter Haven

@Evil_MrM  They've got him taking reps at SS this year again but...his hands have been pretty stone-ish too.  He and  Flores couldn't both get reps at SS in Vegas so he's getting them in Bing...
