The Rangers and Zack Greinke are holding up Winter Meetings

It looks to me like all of baseball is sitting around waiting to see what happens with free-agent Zack Greinke before they start making deals for other players…

Based on reports today from CBS Sports, Fox Sports and, it seems like the Rangers are also holding up the Winter Meetings, working to keep their big-time shortstops, and instead use 3B-1B prospect Mike Olt in a multiple-team deal that gets them D-Backs OF Justin Upton, while letting Josh Hamilton go, and then using that money to sign Greinke, who is also being pursued by the Dodgers.

Zack Greinke polaroidWhy do I care? Because, in the event Sandy Alderson decides to trade R.A. Dickey, a good source told Andy Martino of the Daily News, “Keep a close eye on the Rangers.”

Why? Because Texas has a deep farm system, including Olt, who is capable of playing outfield, and it seems Dickey might be a fall-back for Texas – as is Rays RHP James Shields, for whom the Rays are seeking a young bat.

The Royals are interested in Dickey and Shields, as well, but they have no interest in Greinke.

The Dodgers are reportedly interested in Dickey, as well… and Greinke, of course.

According to Ken Rosental at, one proposed deal would send Upton to Texas and Asdrubal Cabrera to Arizona, with the Indians getting a package of young talent, possibly including Olt. Rosenthal says there is another scenario that includes the Rays, who would get a young bat as well, while sending Shields to the Rangers with Upton.

It’s crazy. It really is. All while the Mets continue talking with Dickey’s agent and maybe not trading and signing him instead of a contract extension…
