The Mets were seen scouting the Cubs

The Mets were among five teams scouting the Cubs in recent days (Chicago Tribune, July 31).

The Cubs have reportedly been shopping utility infielder Emilio Bonifacio, who the Mets looked in to acquiring this past winter, Sandy Alderson said before the season (MetsBlog, Feb. 7).

Bonifacio, 29, is hitting .279 with a .318 OBP in in 298 plate appearances this season. He is a switch-hitter, batting well against left-handed pitching, with experience in center field and second base. He is due roughly $1 million the rest of this year, after which he can be a free agent.

The Cubs also have two shortstops among the best seven prospects in baseball, according to a recent list by MLB.com; and their big-league shortstop, Starlin Castro, is hitting .270 with 11 HR and made his third All-Star team this year at just 24 years old.

Castro is a perfect match for the Mets, now that the Cubs have since acquired top SS prospect Addison Russell, an anonymous member of the Mets recently said (Daily News, July 7).

miniMCavatarMatthew Cerrone: As for Castro, or Javier Baez, etc., I keep hearing they’re unlikely to deal a young infielder this summer. Instead, like the D-Backs, they will continue to evaluate their collection of shortstops, second and third basemen, and work to acquire under-contract, major-league ready, young starting pitching this winter. I have no idea why Alderson would want Bonifacio, other than it gives him more versatile, mediocre options on his roster.

Come on cubs, you're holding on to three shortstop. Mets can get Baez to play short until Wright retires and then move him into 3rd, he can fill in there

I was hoping that SA would have found a taker for both CY and COLLINS, but we were unlucky...I would have traded both of them for a pack of gummie bears.

For the Mets, scouting other teams' players is strictly an act of voyeurism!

Trading with another team is strictly based upon reducing payroll and continuing the saga of "wait 'til tomorrow."

I want one of those 2 Cubs SS prospects! The Cubs are rated as the #1 team for position prospects.  What are they going to do with 3 SS?  Something like that can cause a problem in an organization.  Give up one of our good young pitchers and  maybe a 2nd prospect. And then hope for the best - at least they wont be out half the time like aging Tulo whoi is at his peak right now., $25 mill salary, injury history, etc.  But what will we do with Tejada?  If he keeps hitting, that will ball up the works.

Nothing will get done with this lame organization

Yes the Mets not trading for any one is "very dissapointing" ,however all the comments on Metsblog these past days are anything but dissapointing for Cerrones wallet.

If only the Mets could trade '14 David Wright for '06 David Wright.  Then they would have a bona fide 3 hitter and slugger in the middle of the lineup. Wright is killing them this season.  Everyone was worried about Duda and d'Arnaud.  People should be worried about Wright.  He looks terrible.  He's afraid of the ball and flinches at any breaking ball and when is the last time he drove the ball the other way.  If he doesn't improve or return to his old form his contract will become a huge albatross.

Please, no Bonafacio!

No Castro either.  From the Cubs, the guy to get is OF Soler who just advanced to AAA.  He's signed for 5 years with reasonable contract.  Stick him in LF and focus on SS this winter.

Bonifacio? We're now debating the merits of Bonifacio?

I just had an uplifting thought: What if Sandy's plan all along was to hold onto Chris Young until the trade deadline so that when he didn't acquire anyone, he could distract from that story by releasing CY?

Ron Davis

they want to change ball parks with the Cubs. lol

Mets scouts all getting paid so they have to be somewhere, this is a non-story

I'd take Bonifacio in a SECOND.  As long as I'm giving up Chris Young and his whole contract.  Actually, I'll pay the contract.  Actually, you can keep Bonifacio too, just take Young.

Who cares? I doubt Sandy's getting anyone. Just trying to get the fans get interested.

whatever, another year another under .500 team not looking to get any help, even minor help would be nice to see.

Why the Cubs traded everyone that was available and any good!

I am so glad some of you are not the GM....empty the farm for Baez? None of you have seen him play....do you know he's hitting .255 at AAA......do you know he strikes out 1x out of every 3 ab?.....yes he's young, had plus power but is not a high average player and he is also a butcher at SS and will not play shortstop in the majors very long......I would NOT trade Syndergaard for him.

I hope the Mets are right next year but this is what the last five years have been like:

Boring trade dead lines and winter meetings

Boring owners

Boring GM and Manager

Boring ball park

I miss Cashman-Omar

Shea and fun trade deadlines

@thwacker one will play short, one will play 2nd and one will go or play 3rd. They call them SS's but every one is projected as a 2nd baseman or 3rd baseman..Sound like anybody we know?

@11gilkey This is a good point. A lot of us (myself included) are celebrating the good play by all the "question mark" players and acting like Wright will bounce right back to his usual self next year for a big playoff run. He looks absolutely lost right now. Really hope this season is an anomaly...

ch4nymets

@11gilkey His contract is already a huge albatross with this ownership group.  Make no mistake, Wright's best is behind him.  You may be looking at the new D.Wright.

@donw that may be the best idea I've seen thrown out on here all day

desmond stays and cabrera 2nd

@yankeehater @Rich Colacino No doubt they'd question Noah's numbers but I think it's Castro that makes the most sense for the Mets in reality(I just assume there's no way they'd deal Bryant) as he is already performing at the major league level and under team control at a reasonable price moving forward. I'm not sure exactly what the asking price would look like or how it would differ from Castro/Baez/Russell/Alcantara (again, I assume Bryant is unattainable) but the Mets and Cubs are a PERFECT match so I'd like to see something get done! The Cubs have the higher level guys in comparison with the Diamondbacks so I hope that's where the deal is made when it finally happens.
