Juan Lagares runs

The Mets want Juan Lagares to steal more bases

Juan Lagares is free to steal whenever he wants, but Terry Collins has also been giving him a “must-steal” sign in certain situations, as well (ESPN, Sept. 2).

As such, Lagares has five stolen bases in his last five games, including two Tuesday night against the Marlins.

“He’s got a great first step, he’s got great speed when he gets it going,” Collins said before Tuesday’s game. “He shows it in the outfield. That’s why I say there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be able to do it.”

Lagares has 13 stolen bases in 19 attempts in his career.

He told reporters he had been hesitant to steal bases earlier this season because of the hamstring injury that eventually placed him on the disabled list.

I wonder what they want Granderson to do?

They always want more from the guys doing their job, but Never hold the ones accountable who don't! Backwards Ass Organization.

I don't believe in coincidence. Keith, Ron, and Gary have all stated that JL could/should steal bases. Are we to believe after 5/6 of the season Collins had an ephiney (Sp)?

Duda was batting 6 until he was ready and now he's a cleanup hitter and dangerous.

Lagares was batting 7 in the order and now he's leading off and stealing.

Do we notice a pattern of letting the hitter get comfortable then moving him to where he needs to be?

If you look at Juan's minor league stats through majors based and based on his age, his ceiling projection is most comparable to Tori Hunter. Last year I would not call a full year for him, this is his true full season and has progressed nicely. Look for Juan to start turning on balls next year. Obviously stealing 5 bases and 5 days shows that he can swipe 20. Next year projecting a breakout year of .280 average 20/20 season with same defense. And just a side note as it stands right now Lagares is number 4 in entire NL in WAR (5.6) for position players and number 9 in entire MLB. The only players ahead of him; Josh Donaldson, Mike Trout, Jason Heyward, Santon, Beltre, Gordon, Peralta, and Cano. That's it. When people start talking about locking him up early I would probably say yes to that. Best defensive player in game with a bat that is getting better everyday.

The Mets have to fly Noah to New York after the Vegas season is over. Hand him his contract and next to where it reads no Skiing, Basketball, Paint Ball, etc. during the off season, Add no more trips to the Zoo,

This shouldn't even be an issue. Why does he have to be told to steal? The Mets don't score a lot. The steal and hit and run should be  a constant part of the program. Figures--it takes until September and being 14 games out to wake up. Way to go Alderson and Collins.

Funny, I always thought that those Moneyball (sabermetrics) guys feel that the concept of the stolen base was passe, and counterproductive for their strategy.  Nobody was making a big deal about it when Eric Young was stealing all those bases last year.

It's like they just came out with a new bunch of Strat-o-Matic cards that now show stolen bases as a valid stat.

I think next year is going to be a real breakout year for Lagares. If he can add a few more walks I think we have a solid leadoff hitter.....now just get rid of Granderson.....what a bum!

Too bad there's no sophomore of the year award.

The Mets want to maximize Lagares potential and they should. This kid has a world of talent. He can easily be a 300 hitter, 10 to 15 HR, 80 plus RBI, 20 plus steals.

This is such a good idea - I mean advertising the fact that Juan is probably going to be stealing whenever he gets on base, so throw him out.TC is a master strategist! He should be an Army general, so he can tell our adversaries exactly where we plan to attack, so they won't waste resources defending the wrong place!

Adding base stealing to his repertoire can only make him more of an asset.  However, I want him in CF for 150 to 155 games next year.  Trying to be Rod Carew jeopardizes that.  Me personally, i'd prefer he just went 1st to 3rd and kept it in the garage.  Unless he's going to get 30+ SBs, I'm not sure the benefit.

Murph stole 23 last season and the Mets topped out at 74 wins.

LOL @ you guys beating up TC for speaking on it.  TC can't do anything right i guess.  Meanwhile, anyone notice how the SB attempts out of Murph SLOOOOOOWED down as soon as the league caught wind of his little streak?  I guess that's TC's fault too.

If he was as good at stealing bases as the owners were at stealing our money, Rickey Henderson's record would be in jeopardy.

You what will suck....when this kid is due for an extension...he is irreplaceable. Mets should lock him up now (LMAO)

He is bigger then all of them right now

A Juan Lagares who steals more than 20 bases, is a Juan Lagares that just became the most valuable guy on the team.

.313 leads this league. Murphy is seventh at .301. What is this WWII. Where Pete Grey at??

Stealing bases doesn't really matter for him. If Legares can hit .290+ and bring the OBP up, with his glove and arm I'll take it!

why announce it? now pitchers will be waiting on him to pick him off, dammit terry, just keep your mouth shut

@WoodsideNative Did you actually read the piece where it mentions Lagares hamstring issue? And do you remember he was actually on the DL with that issue? And do you think they should have risked having him re-injure that hamstring and start stealing bases as soon as he came off the DL? And until he was fully healed and, more importantly, in his head healed enough to steal a base do you think they should've had him doing so?

No need for conspiracy theories or convoluted explanations - player wasn't ready to be a big-time base stealer, team didn't force the issue. Now he's ready and stealing some bases. Simple as that.

And the spelling is epiphany. You're welcome.

mankowski

Was Lagares ready to be a base stealer in May?

nncyel

@Bob Burket Why does everything come down to criticizing Alderson & Collins. Did you actually read the piece? The part about him having hamstring issues and being hesitant to steal because of that. And did you ever think that Collins & Alderson also might not have wanted him stealing because of that? No you didn't did you? You just found another opportunity to rip SA and TC and away you went. And you'd probably have been the first to rip them if they had Lagares stealing more earlier in the season and he had an even worse hamstring injury that kept him out the entire season.

Look, the Mets have been losing for a while now. TC and SA should be held accountable for the overall lack of success of the organization. But every nit-picking detail? Enough.

@flmetsfan

offense is at 20+ year low, league-wide.  Batting average, HRs, slugging pct, runs scored are all down.  Teams are going to have to get back to Billy-ball, to stolen bases, to hit and run, bunting, squeezes ... gotta generate offense somehow.

hashburry

@flmetsfan May have to adjust that thinking with no one hitting home runs anymore!

I'm not sure opposing pitchers had been ignoring him before terry's comments.

The majority of fans as I see it have had enough of Terry ball. I for one think he sucks, I want Wally, I think he is a Met and he has earned an opportunity to take the reigns and see where he can get this team. Terry has earned a pink slip.

flmetsfan

@C.K. Dexter Haven Rod Carew?  Was he known as a base stealing threat who got injured a lot?  His stats sure don't reflect that.

Lou Brock, Tim Raines, Rickey Henderson, and (dare I say) Vince Coleman; perhaps, but not Rod Carew.

I think of Rod Carew as more of a Tony Gwynn type.  High batting average with a good base running ability, but not a base stealer.

Any base stealer will steal regardless of the pitcher knowing or not. Do you think pitchers had no idea Ricky Henderson would try to steal?? BTW legates needs 4.6 plate appearances per game to qualify for batting average. If he keeps hitting and TC doesn't sit him we may see his name in top ten.

hashburry
hashburry

@Juan Contreras You know, TC has no filter from his brain to his mouth.  Why doesn't he just give out the signs to the other team before each game.  He is so desperate to show his value that he takes credit for every positive thing the team does.  Now he has made Legares a base stealer.  How about just letting Juan tell the reporters his hammy is better and he is now more likely to run.  I'd rather have a guy like Bochy who talks in generalities and barely mentions players individually.  TC is the most insecure manager in the league.  The sad thing is, he really has no reason to be worried about his job as long as he does what Alderson puts in the pre game memo.  Oh, and feel free to burn out the young arms in the bullpen in games that have no consequence.

@Juan Contreras you want pitchers to throw over and disrupt things. Also other teams can clearly see Juan is running more by the simple fact that he's running more. When Terry gets asked that question, should he just say "Shhhh. It's a secret."? OR Question: "Hey TC, why is Juan running so much lately?" TC: "No Comment. It will spoil things if I tell you."

@nncyel  NO!  YOU LOOK!  THE METS SUCK. ALDERSON AND COLLINS ARE IN CHARGE OF THIS MESS. YES, I WILL RIP THEM UNTIL BETTER PLAYERS ARE BROUGHT IN, THE GAME GETS PLAYED RIGHT AND THINGS TURN AROUND.

@slainte2 @flmetsfan Have you seen the NL batting average leaders? 7 guys are hitting .300 or higher.. Only 7. That's insane.

@hashburry @flmetsfan Sabermetrics said the stolen bases, when done below a certain percentage, ended up costing more runs than they gained you.  The percentages may have changed thanks to the down turn in offense.  Statistically looking at baseball is not a philosophy about baseball, it is a method by which a philosophy is created.

@gangsta why do you hate wally backman? what did he do to you? why torture him by making him manager of a AAAA team? have you no decency, sir?

C.K. Dexter Haven
C.K. Dexter Haven

@flmetsfan @C.K. Dexter Haven Fair enough.  Wrote Lou Brock originally, but changed it.   Sentiment is the same.  I think lagares is much more important as a solid bat with GG defense (much of which requires his legs) playing 150+ games than he is as a potential 24 SB threat, with a solid bat and GG defense but now for only 130 games due to varying injures.  At least IMO.  Juan spent 2 stints on the DL this year BEFORE asking him to steal more often.

nncyel

@Bob Burket @nncyel Or you could continue frothing at the mouth over the success or lack thereof of a baseball team. Something you have absolutely no control over, no matter how many capital letters you use in your post. By the way, you can also do capital letters in bold. Like THIS. Think that will help?

@Dana Smith That was the way baseball was before steroids and the expansion era.  Today, pitchers have caught up since more athletic types are pitching.

Bob Burket

@nncyel @Bob Burket  Isnt that what this stupid blog is for anyway? Complain about how bad the team sucks even though we can't do anything about it. All pointless. Don't you think? The best thing about the Mess being on TV is that I can go watch something else. That has happened a lot these last several years.

nncyel
nncyel

@Bob Burket @nncyel The blog can be anything we want it to be. It could be a place where fans come for intelligent discussion of the Mets and baseball in general. There was a very good post earlier in the year about the reasons for increased arm troubles of pitchers. It received about 8 comments. Anything having to do with TC or SA though attracts multitudes of comments usually containing the word "moron" or "idiot" somewhere in the post. Posted by the same people over an over and over again. Talk about pointless.

Most of the people making these posts actually seem to be happy they are miserable. Because when the Mets win they disappear. Perhaps, as in your case it seems to be an outlet for your frustration. Which I suppose is a good thing. Better than shooting your television. But I think a better solution is for fans such as yourself is to develop a little more wisdom in their approach to life in general. I'm as much a Mets fan as anyone on this blog. I just don't get angry over their fortunes. If they win they win and if they lose they lose. I take it as it comes and I try to take enjoyment from simply being engaged with something - it's something to check on almost every day of the year to see how the team and individual players are faring.

And if you are watching something else  you are missing out on some of the world's best athletes playing the world's greatest sport - whichever team wins or loses, it's still great entertainment.

@Bob Burket @nncyel Is this the part where we start slinging insults from 7th grade at each other? No thanks. Better things to do with my time.
