The Mets have had their moments, Wright wants to be more consistent

The Mets are 14-11 and they’ve won six of their last eight games.

The Mets are off on Monday, after which they’ll open a two-game set on Tuesday in Philadelphia.

“We’ve had our moments, now it’s just a matter of trying to be more consistent and trying to stretch it out over a few weeks, instead of just good series, bad series,” David Wright told MetsBlog’s Rich Coutinho this past weekend. “I think we’ve won a couple close games, lost a couple of close games. I think what you do in those one- or two-run games really make or break your season. We have to find a way to be better in those closer games.

In this MetsBlog One-on-One with Wright, Coutinho also talks to David about his version of leadership and what to expect from the team’s farm system:

He is consistent. 130-150 strikeouts every year. He could cut that number in half by opening his eyes when he swings. I'm surprised no one has picked up on that.

Sandy confuses me sometimes. He does not want to give up players to make a trade. He does not want to spend money. Yet the fans were loud in their support of singing Abreu for 1st base, considering his power and low cost, just what Sandy likes. So what does he do, he lets sign with another team for 7.5 million this year. They used his defense as an excuse to walk away. Yet we have no range, bad footwork, stone hands Duda there. Well it's a gamble, signing CY for the same money wasn't a gamble? If we have them both our payroll would be 85 million now!

Abreu, 10 Hr's, 31RBI, 17 extra base hits, 25K's. DW who we all love has   1Hr, 13RBI, 4 Extra base hits, 27K's!! Get the picture, Sandy you fcked it up. You will probably NEVER have a chance at that price, giving up no players again!!!!!!

Brandon Nimmo was 4-4 tonight with a hr, 2 runs scored, and 2 rbi.

He's hitting .407 on the year.

That's a Sandy draft pick.

Come June I would offer Drew a 1st deal for 8.5 million....he probably won't take it blue if that's the case then screw him....nobody is going to sign him then....but if he does take it we will upgrade at ST offensively and defensively for only 8.5 million....he can add another 2-3 wins to this team which might actually mean something the way they are playing

Brandon Nimmo ripping it up again tonight at St. Lucie. 3 for 3 with a double and RBI. Now up to .400 with an on-base percentage of well over .500. It's taken some time (as expected for someone so raw) but he is turning himself into a big-time prospect before our very eyes this season.

Don't worry, by July, they will be consistent. Consistently unwatchable...

Not sure if this is the correct forum, but I feel the need to say something positive about the Mets. I'm a New York City public school teacher down the road from Citi field. The Mets gave our school over 300 FREE tickets for last Thursday's day game (Colon's gem). The kids (4th graders) had a blast. Just wanted to publicly thank the Mets for doing right by the local kids and giving them an opportunity that many of them don't have everyday. We had a blast!

3 over .500 with a team that hasn't hit at all and has had questionable end of the bullpen work. Not too shabby but a few areas HAVE to pick it up.

Didn't realize our offense ranks last in the NL in batting average (.218), extra-base hits (50) and slugging percentage (.318) (from Sports Xchange). I guess our stolen bases help and we rarely let in more than 3 runs a game. Watch out for the Phils' Ruiz - he's hot!

Team still needs a legitimate lead-off hitter and a power bat. And a legitimate closer. You wanna see Farnsworth or Valverde in a pressure situation? The team is getting close. Deal an arm for a quality bat.

I know I'm enjoying watching the mets this season. I expect hitters like Wright and Grandy will come around,

and we have some super exciting arms on the way, probably a midseason trade too if we stay in the hunt.

I've been a mets fan for 40+ years and I'm not dark on the team.  Maybe this comments section is only for really skeptical troubled people to come and blow off their unhappiness, in the form of the unhappy-fan who hates everything and criticizes everyone. Yet when proven wrong they just point out another problem.

Heck the Yankees added HALF A BILLION DOLLARS to their payroll and they have won ONE more game then the METS. The METS have won 2 more games than the Red Sox.  For all you ranting on the manager, the owners the FO, every darn player..factor that In and don't get back to me

@eric88  Can we just stop with the Abreu garbage. I just love how people distort things.

For every scout that loved Abreu there was another one who didn't like him. Between his defense and supposed "holes in his swing that would be exposed in MLB" he was a very big gamble. Just go back and look. It's real easy to say they screwed up now. But can we please be realistic.

And with the state of the Mets they were never going to take a 6 year commitment gamble for almost 70M on a player who many were questioning and had never played an inning in the majors. That was never going to happen.

I'm not defending Duda or SA but to rip them for not going after this guy is just ridiculous. Only 5 teams were in on him for a reason. So let's not make the guy out to be Babe Ruth. Besides the fact that he has played a month. Let the pitchers get a book on him.

As well as the fact that yes his salary is only 7M for this year, what about the 10M signing bonus? You really think the Mets were going to pony up 17M this year for a guy who has never played an inning in the majors? Was never going to happen so can we please move on from this.

I think you are right. David is a prime sample of what he is criticizing. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate David greatly, but I do feel he lacks the charisma or consistency to motivate others, which is what is expected from the team captain.

Tarheel11

@Victor Triguero  Absolutely. TDA is hitting .286 after his 0-15 start. The key is to get Grandy going and also CY. But Tejada just sticks out like a sore thumb as a glaring hole. Would love to have that extra "2-3 wins" Drew would give us. But you're right I just don't see them spending at all

@4EverMets @ac0814The thing that Nimmo has over those busts is an uncanny plate discipline. The kid has an amazing eye at the plate. That on base ability alone should get him to the majors. Whether the power develops will determine if he can become a star.

Andrew Sodergren

@William Bonilla And since I posted, he added a homer to his night. 4-for-4. Saw him up close two weeks ago. Sweet swing, and he's added some muscle since he was drafted.

@Tarheel11 @Victor Triguero I also don't think you can take if as a given that Drew would have won you another 2 or 3 games.  He could easily have come in and performed as porly as Granderson.

Merrill Needham

Look everybody, we all know Tejada can't hit a lick. But he has been playing phenomenal defense. His defensive play has actually saved at least two games so far. If he keeps that up, I don't care how much he hits. Look at how well we did with Ordonez. Personally, as long as he plays short the way he has, I see no reason to bring in Drew. I see no reason to trade for one either. Grandy will get going. TDA and and CY are starting to. Lagares is coming back. We are 14-11 and 3.5 out after spotting the division 3 games to start the season. The team we spotted them to just happens to be behind us in 3rd place.

drmetfan
drmetfan

@bleck319  Do the Yankees have a fan blog? Why don't you go over to there and yap about your Bronx Bombers?

domtoretto
domtoretto

It's a completely different situation now than it was with Ordonez. It was ok for Ordonez to hit .210 because he had great offensive players around him that carried the team. Alfonzo, Olerud, Piazza, Ventura. This lineup now doesn't hold a candle. If Tejada can't hit then he has to go. Defense only gets you so far when you can't hit and your team is last in the league in the major offensive categories.

Richard Davis
Richard Davis

@Tarheel11 @MMIAA @Merrill Needham A bit more patience is what is needed rather than panic.  With the pitching performing the way it has (bullpen excluded), we are

near dealing from a major strength.  Consider that Montero and Thor are coming mid-season and Harvey and Hefner will return come spring training.  That means that come trade deadline, we could package Colon, Gee or Niese to get that impact player (think of the deal in 83 for Hernandez).  Perhaps we may even have enough to get Tulo.  Then, in spring training we could package whomever is left in order to get that major final piece (think when we got Gary Carter).

To panic now and trade a starter for a Franklin or other unknown or middling player could cause the team to damage 2015 and beyond.  We aren't going to win the series this year, but could surprise a lot of teams and become a true, long-term contender with the right approach this year.

Mike Dell Italia
Mike Dell Italia

Tejeda is batting 200 and has one more extra base hit then drew, for a shortstop drew is actually very good

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@MMIAA @Merrill Needham  By no means is Drew an all star but he is better than Tejada both offensively and defensively. He is a legit ML SS. Tejada is a backup infielder. Drew also doesn't cost you prospects. How can you say overpaid? at 14M absolutely! but nobody in their right mind would pay that much. But he makes the team better hands down. And what other options are there? Prospects who are best suited to play 2B (Franklin, Owings, etc.) or guys like Didi who s a great glove but can't hit either.

MMIAA
MMIAA

@Merrill Needham I see no reason to sign drew he is way overpaid and not that good. but we do need an upgrade at SS
