The least you should know from Monday’s Hot Stove, presented by Citi

The Mets will introduce Curtis Granderson at a 12:30 p.m. press conference on Tuesday at the Winter Meetings, which will air live on SNY.

The Mets met Monday with Bartolo Colon‘s agent (Murti, Dec. 9). However, they are not likely players for him, given his price range (Martino, Dec. 9).

Though there’s skepticism they’ll find a taker (Martino, Dec. 9), the Mets are still pushing hard to deal Daniel Murphy (Passan, Dec. 9). Eric Young Jr. and Wilmer Flores will be considered for second base, in the event Murphy is traded, Sandy Alderson told reporters Monday in Orlando.

Alderson said he is looking to add a starting pitcher, but he’s reluctant to give a multi-year deal.

Meanwhile, there are four teams engaged in talks with the Mets about Lucas Duda and/or Ike Davis (Carig, Dec. 9), including the Brewers and Rays (Martino, Dec. 9).

The Mets have shown interest in signing free agent relievers Mitchell Boggs (Sherman, Dec. 9) and Chris Perez.

The Mets have discussed free-agent SS Cesar Izturis, who they view as a possible back-up infielder (Puma, Dec. 9).

Lastly, Roy Halladay announced his retirement from baseball, signing a one-day contract with the Blue Jays.

Just a thought. Mets trade both Duda and Davis to different teams and sign Kenny Morales from the Angels. I know is defense is ok at best, but i believe is swing is getting better and he could have breakout season again. Be nice w/ your responses.

izturis is an aweful player - boggs could regain his form.

Mitchell Boggs, Izturis, REALLY? This has to be a joke! Please sell the team!

Alderson is clueless, effectively three GM's on this team and they get nothing done. It is going to be another long year for Mets fans!

Sandy should be at the Pirates door and talk them into either Ike or Duda  sells point is you need a first baseman but you do not want to over pay in salary. what can we get for Ike at best with what the Pirates can afford to trade. How about a Tabatia?  i like Neil Walker but that is a pipe dream but i think they need a first baseman what can we get Jordy Mercer a ss? just ways they can fill a need for us and we can fill a need for them if they take Duda i won't ask for anything other then what they can do.

all of you guys who say Murphy's defense is terrible apparently don't watch the games....he certainly has improved enough to be at least average.....and to say as well that he's streaky and his bat dosen't make up for his defense also aren't watching.....he's no more streaky than David Wright.

OT: Interesting nugget in Deadspin this morning that the Mariners may have bid against themselves for Cano.  Guess Omar wasn't the only GM who did that.

Honestly peeps, if the front office didn't feel the pressure from the fans these past few weeks, do you think they would have signed Granderson anyway?  Why is it my gut tells me No.

Any chance Wilmer Flores can become the next Edgardo Alfonzo? He really does remind me a lot of the Fonz.

To the majority of Mets fans on here that are going crazy stop.

Most of you are overrating Murphy. Murphy is actually a below-leauge average second basemen. As a matter of fact many people view him as a super utility player,or a slightly below average 2b. Murphy used to be a consistent bat for average, but not anymore. He is a streaky hitter at best, and is also a terrible defensive 2b. So who ever has said "I like seeing him field grounders from 2b" I don't know what you have been watching, but I get a heart attack whenever I see him field the ball period.

Has everyone forgot about Flores. The Mets have a solid option who should be at least as good as murphy at 2b when he gets more playing time.

Many of you have also said "the Mets aren't doing anything next year". What did you expect? without Harvey this team wasn't going anywhere next year unless somone steps up. Were aiming for 2015 in where the Mets should have one of the best rotations in baseball.

Harvey,Wheeler,Syndergaard,Montero,Niese\Mejjia

so please Mets fans calm yourselfs down.

Thank u that ios all

When your a Mets fan the date on the calendar is unimportant. What is important is the reality of what the teams final roster will be and how we were all deceived again about this being our 'magical" year. there will be no more good players coming and salaries dumped, Ike, Murphy. It is our reality.

This franchise is such a joke! For years we heard they were waiting for 2014 for the bad contracts to come off the books combined with our pitching arms and young players to be ready to compete and start spending money. Now they spend 60 mil on a 4 yr contract for Granderson and Sandy and ownership are now walking around with the chest out like if they signed Cano or Pujos in his prime. All I hear is we want this but we can't or won't. We won't give out multiple year contracts, we can't sign someone for their asking price. Is it me or did this franchise get relocated to a small market.

We are being held hostage by The Wilpons and this team will not win for many more years. Look at the setup of this team and all the holes we have throughout this team. Sandy does not want to spend money or trade value to get value. He wants to trade his spare parts to get value. Meanwhile there has been several trades already by other team where they received value for nothing. But Sandy was sleeping by his desk waiting for Granderson's agent to return his call. This team is such a joke!

that does not matter nothing major will happen that did not happen last night. They have to put on makeup for the Presser for Grandy.

@xavier22 I don't know....how much more would an offer have to be from Seattle for Cano to leave New York?  If the Yanks offer $175 and Seattle comes back at $180...he's not leaving.  Granted an extra $65M is a ton of cash but the Yanks might have met somewhere in there.

Henny Cognac
Henny Cognac

I would assume that Cano's agents threw out a dollar figure they'd accept and a certain amount of years they'd take that amount at... Same thing they'd offered the Yankees... The mariners took it at ten years to leave a little room to make more moves... they didn't bid against themselves they got the game changer they wanted at a steeper price instead of waiting to get their price like Sandy... I don't see anything wrong with that... the Yankees tried to play hardball with him and it didn't work... And it's not our money to complain about if it's worth it... The Mets are the only team operating within a system where talent doesn't mean as much as salary...

Bob Wolfe
Bob Wolfe

You might be right, but I think they saw their options disappearing real fast and found Granderson was the only one with what will likely turn out to be a managable contract.

Probably not.  Alfonzo had a decent glove.

@Sean Matrai If one player getting hurt would cause the team to forfeit the 2014 season after all the so-called "planning" that has been going on since Alderson got here then this is the worst front office is MLB history.

Poop-a-doodle-doo!
Poop-a-doodle-doo!

@Sean Matrai If we are overrating Murphy, then what do you say about the fans in here concerning Lagares and his "whopping" .244 batting average?

Sean Matrai

@eric88  Where do you get the idea that there selling the team?

Sure this team is acting like there cheap by trying to trade these minorly overpaid contracts, however if we can get the piece we need back while at the same time clear room why not. Most of these players that you have been discussing have been underachieving anyway. The Mets are not selling the team.

robzilla

@mikepiazza3186   Exactly. Been saying this for months. There is no way in hell that he is going to give Granderson $60M and then do nothing else.

mrnegative

So we should all be Sandy and Wilpon apologists. Yeah! Let's TRUST a guy who is a known liar. Come on! Fans have every right to complain right now. This team is not operating like a major market organization, yet they charge major market prices. I see 29 other teams active and trying to improve. The mets were pressured into signing Granderson. Sandy has done nothing else to significantly improve the roster so forgive us for not "giving him a chance".

Agee's Catch
Agee's Catch

@mets2020 Wilpon will only go away when the fan base turns it's collective back on the organization.  You have to cut off as many streams of revenue possible. That means:

no tickets

no merchandise

no watching

no listening

it won't happen. they're not selling

@Henny Cognac From the article (which was sourced through the Dallas Morning News):

"By mid-day Friday, Seattle had heard that some team bid nine years and $225 million for Robinson Cano, so the Mariners upped their bid to $240 million and 10 years before apparently realizing the initial bid had come from themselves, too."

That sounds like bidding against yourself to me.

Isn't Flores' issue his range? He supposedly has great hands. Fonzie didn't have the greatest range either....

BringBackDaveTelghe
BringBackDaveTelghe

@Bong Bongadowski @Sean Matrai I think you give a rookie with possibly the best glove in CF a chance to improve his bat.  If Lagares somehow can become just league average on Offense in CF you realize how much more of a valuable player he'd be then Murphy?...

Agee's Catch
Agee's Catch

For all of Daniel Murphy's offensive prowess, he gives it all back on defense. If he would draw more walks, he'd be far more valuable.  Lagares is an above average fielder who has a history of hitting in the minor leagues.  A lot of players have struggled first year and have had solid careers.  The glove and the offensive potential have earned him a second season.

Joanie Yan

@mrnegative And now they're trying to recoup some of Granderson's money by trading Murphy and Davis

Hodges14
Hodges14

@Agee's Catch @mets2020 The only chance for them to be forced out was through the Ponzi scheme clawback suit and they spent their money wisely for good laywers and got away with a relative slap on the wrist.

These people can't help themselves, it's sad. The negativity here is on par with Cubs fans. If we can come out of the WM with a viable SS and set groundwork to try and trade one or more of Duda, Davis, and Murphy I think this is a much better team than the last few years.  I'm not saying they'll win it all. It would be near impossible w/o Harvey IMO, but they could make things interesting while really looking towards next year.

Agee's Catch
Agee's Catch

Flores will either turn himself into Jeff Kent or eventually slide over to first base. If the kid is going to make it, its as an RBI guy.  That plays well at first.

Agee's Catch
Agee's Catch

No.  Not that I have anything at all against Johan.  It's just that he didn't finish the season on the mound, so when we need himin April & May, I'm not sure he'll be available.  Honestly, I'd love to sign Colon.  Barring that I'd take a flyer on Harang or Daisuke Matsuzaka.  Aaron Harang threw 23 inning with a 3.5 ERA for us.  Dice-K's last 4 starts were very good.  Considering what we're asking for this pitcher to do, either one would be a good option.

Agee's Catch

I was thinking of the CF we traded for Johan.

@Joanie Yan @mrnegative  The Mets were going to trade Ike,and or Murphy before Granderson was signed. There was even some talk last offseason about dealing either one of them in a deal,or both.

You talk as if the fans are wrong with being disappointed. They were suppossed to be aggressive this year and instead one signing and back to the everyone is out of the price range talk. They are literally not spending one dime that came off of the books. They will spend the 20m they get from the new tv and that's it. 85m dollar payroll that will bet bottom 5. There is no reason for this. And before you start saying you don't want to hurt the future keep two things in mind, grandy had two million dollars deferred to the back of the contract and I know that's common but not when you cap your payroll at 80m and pretend it's because you don't want to take on long term money bec it hurts the future. The second thing to keep in mind, if they were really holding back bec they don't want to hurt the future then why no 1 yr contracts for big dollars...aka josh Johnson, colon, Brian Wilson, etc
