MLB: New York Mets at Seattle Mariners

The latest Bartolo Colon trade rumors: He knows nothing

The Mets are trying hard to trade RHP Bartolo Colon (Knobler, July 22), and the Giants have expressed interest (ESPN Deportes, July 22).

“I don’t know anything about that,” Colon said through an interpreter, when asked about trade rumors (MLB.com, July 27). “Those are decisions for the upper management, and you can’t control that stuff.”

The Mets are willing to pay some of Colon’s remaining salary this season, (Martino, July 25), but are unwilling to pick up a portion of his $11 million 2015 tab (Carig, July 22), which is exactly what interested teams are asking them to do according to columnist Joel Sherman (NY Post, July 23).

On the other hand, the Mets could choose to let Colon get claimed off waivers in August and, though they’d get nothing back in return for him, they also wouldn’t be on the hook for his salary in 2015, a front office executive told Sherman, predicting that this is exactly what the Mets will try to do.

Off topic, but I love how colon speaks through an interpreter, he has been in the majors for years

kind of obvious that Sandy overpaid for this guy. He HAS provided us with a few memorable  starts and more than his share of food-related humor.  But Bartolo has no place on the roster next season. Somebody in contention must want him.

All of this talk about Tulo coming to the Mets... Management didn't give
Jose Reyes A $100 million contract, what makes people think they are going to go out and trade for a similar contract with similar injury history?

I know, but now the mets are trading him cuz they don't want to keep paying him the money..

guy was 18-6 with a 1.17 WHIP last year. Did you think he was signing for the league minimum?

Are the peeps who are scouting Bartolo performing Colonoscopies?

The headline includes "He knows nothing." Dumbest headline of the week.

As for Colon using an interpreter, who can blame him considering the toxic environment of the media and their tendency to quote out of context. He's being careful because talking to reporters is like walking through a minefield. Why is that so hard to understand?

I speak a little spanish, but  If I were playing professional futbol in Spain, I'd probably use an interpreter too. I don't know all the euphemisms of the spanish language and I wouldn't want to say something stupid or even worse offensive to the people in the place i'm earning my cash. In this day where EVERY misstep is blown up for general consumption....i wouldn't be taking any chances.

It will be nice to see what the mets do with the $18m in payroll they will have available next yr after the departures of colon and CY. Gotta figure we can at least fill one of our two needs with that...

It is so idiotic and misleading to lead with a post about the Giants since they just acquired Peavy.  They now have zero interest in Colon.

Well since it is out there I am going to say that the mets go the "let him get claimed off of waivers and get nothing back in return for him" camp. Anything to save a buck with this team. Pathetic.

Thoughts...  would Plaweck, Gee and Montero get us Tulo if we picked up all the money?

I love that he can't speak English yet. You'd think he'd be interested in that just from the financial angle...  being as though he made millions in this country and his "brand"is here.

I guess he isn't hungry to communicate.

Not that it's relevant, but surprised Bartolo uses an interpreter, after what, 15 years in the MLB?

I am unclear about how the Mets are not on the hook for Colon's next year contract if they release him in August. Isn't that on condition that someone claims him? What if no one claims him?

Keep in mind that the plan was NEVER to have Colon pitch for the Mets in 2015.  He was always supposed to be traded at the deadline.  If he can't trade him at the deadline, when teams are most vulnerable to add talent for the playoff push, the likelihood that he can get a deal done for him in the off season is slim.  Putting him on waivers is Sandy conceding that his plan backfired, while also attempting to untie the Mets from an $11Mil liability next season. Mets have plenty of SPs

I think the stale rehash of the Giants interest can be removed with them getting Peavy.

Trade Colon and Murphy if possible.  Many SP to fill in for Colon next year.  Many 2B candidates to fill in for Murphy. Use those funds to upgrade SS + LF.

I am convinced you can't have Murphy making almost daily mental (and physical) errors at second base and on the basepaths on a team with championship aspirations

I dont think the mets can have $11 mil just sitting around next year on the bench but what happens if in a deal to get Tulo, they have to give up Niece or Gee in addition to Noah?

Thats 2 spots to be filled with only Harvey coming back and not assured of being 100% anyway.

Wheeler, Niese, Degrom. Harvey, Montero?? Maybe holding on to colon until the winter is the best option.

@Zachary HIlty ....  You know, that's a great point most people overlook, but I think the difference between Tulo and Reyes is that Reyes' game and value was entirely dependent on his legs. Tulo on the other hand is not only a good defensive SS, but a power hitting SS as well. Reyes power was only "ok", more of a doubles and triples hitter than a home run hitter. Take away Reyes legs due to injury and age, and what have you got left?  I didn't like the Mets let Reyes go for nothing, but they would have certainly regretted signing him to a long term deal well into his 30's. The money for Tulo seems a bit reasonable considering he produces as a home run threat from a position that doesn't normally produce power. That makes him more valuable than Reyes.

Kenneth Meltsner

@Zachary HIlty Tulo's gonna sign with the Yankees. Book it! He's a dynamic player but those injuries and home/away splits are quite troubling. But at least the Yankees would probably spell his name correctly.

Won't quite be $18m because of arbitration raises for Murphy, Parnell, Duda, and Gee. Tejada and EYJ can also get raises but may be DFA'd.

If you continued to read the statement, Colon also said "Those are decisions for upper management, and you can't control that stuff." Are you a native speaker? Then learn to read English.

hashburry

@Father Dooley There is no possible way you are a real priest.  The guy obviously spends most of his time at home speaking his native language.  He likely speaks some English, but like some of the Japanese players, he likely uses an interpreter because he is not comfortable with communicating to the press in English.  Sad how narrow minded some of the comments are.

No. Wheeler or Thor would have to be in the deal.

@metstastic They'd put him on revocable waivers.  Not the same as outright release.  If no one claimed him, I'm sure they'd pull him back and try it all over again next season.  the waiver scheme only works if a team claims him. You are correct.  But knowing Sandy, a team would claim him and he'd pull Colon back and try to make a deal...blowing the claim altogether.

I disagree - They needed Colon this year and the only way they were going to get him to sign here is by giving him the 2nd year.  I honestly think the best option is to put him on the revocable waivers and then have someone claim him.  Sorry 11M is not alot for a pitcher on a 1yr deal - see Cliff Lee

@D I like how fans want to trade a player.. expect a king's ransom back for him and at the same time slam his faults.

Don't discount Hefner yet. Add a couple mph to his fastball and hoping he still has the same confidence he had last season when he finally turned the corner.

@jimm120 but then you're paying a 42 year old 15 million next year when you have a couple serviceable 5th starters around

@jmjmjm They need to get rid of Tejada, EY and unless he shows something this year, move Parnell pretty fast.

@hashburry Not saying this to be a bigot, if that is what you are implying.  It just looks like extreme laziness on his part, that's all.

@C.K. Dexter Haven

If no one claims him he remains on the roster and then can be traded to any team.

If he is claimed the Mets have 4 options:

Pull him of waivers (he no longer can be traded this year), or

work out out a trade with the claiming team or

let him go that team with no compensation and the claiming team is now responsible for the full amount of his contract or

if he claimed and a deal can not be worked out you then pull him back

flmetsfan
flmetsfan

@Bud Britton Exactly!  You discount a prospect because they aren't Harvey or Wheeler, and you get Colin McHugh (who is pitching quite well in Houston this year).

Chris Sullivan

@Father Dooley @hashburry I'm sure Colon can speak English. He may not feel that he can express himself clearly that way. There's plenty of native English speakers who butcher the language.
