‘Thank you,’ from Josh Lewin

The Mets announced Thursday that Howie Rose and Josh Lewin will return to broadcast Mets games this season on 710 WOR AM radio.

Screen shot 2014-02-14 at 9.37.10 AMJosh Lewin, WOR Mets Radio:

Mere words can’t express the depth of my appreciation to the dozens of you who went above and beyond on my behalf these past few months.  Many of you took the time to reach out to both the Mets and WOR, and I can’t imagine that hurt my chances of a return to the job I’m so excited about having in the first place. Two little words aren’t close to enough, but they are totally heartfelt: “THANK YOU.”

During this process, some of you have taken some shots at the Mets or WOR, and I say this not as an apologist or a company stooge, but quite sincerely – I have had nothing but great experiences with both the Wilpon family and the new radio station. They both have the best interests of the overall collective at heart, they really do. Also, I’m aware that those with dissenting opinions of the “Howie & Josh” dynamic have taken some shots as well… and I’ll invoke the old George Carlin line: “Like my grandpa always said, ‘Hey, if everyone liked the same thing, they’d all be after your grandma.’” I solemnly and sincerely pledge that I will try, as always, to make every Met fan a happy listener to our presentation…

I regard this job with a near-sacred responsibility since so many are so passionate. And, although I may continue to disappoint some of you, please know I’m doing my best to please everyone, but given that no two listeners have the exact same taste, that’s simply an impossible task. The late Harry Kalas used to quote Shakespeare and tell us fledgling broadcasters “to thine own self be true,” and that’s the way I’ll continue to go at it: Mets fan, a little goofy (okay, a lot goofy), not in possession of a classic radio voice, but at the very least, wanting to inform and entertain for all nine innings without fail. That’s all I can control.

I am overjoyed that I’m back for another year to live out my childhood fantasy as a Mets radio announcer. There is no better partner in the business than Howie Rose, and I am honored to return as the John Oates to his Darryl Hall. It should be a really fun and interesting year. (I can’t wait to watch Bartolo Colon run the bases, can you?)

Lastly, I would love to host as many of you as possible after Opening Day to thank you in person, buy you a beverage, and just talk a little baseball. I’m guessing McFadden’s is the spot that makes sense. Let’s touch base via twitter in late March and coordinate a meet-up, which will serve as my chance to thank you very kind people, fan to fan.

Wishing you peace, love and soul… (and thanking you all again).

Josh....I think you and Howie have been a great duo, and I love your sense of humor, which has been almost a necessity to lighten up our world of Met doldrums over the past few years. I'm hoping that WOR adds an extended pre and post game show (Mets extra plus for an hour on each side, for example) that includes listener call ins, as I'm assuming WFAN will devote about 75% of their airtime to Yankee land, which bores and repels me. As you may (or may not) know, I have been an unofficial Met photographer since 1984, and have images of Bob Murphy and Ralph Kiner in the booth (in their "prime"), as well as many of Howie alone or with the Gary Thorne's and countless others of the world. Hope to meet you one of these days!

Huge fan of Josh Lewin and Howie.  Do we know if Majkowski or however his name is spelled is going to WOR as well?  Look people, the team isn't very good and these guys, in my humble opinion, make the game more entertaining.

Classy, very classy.  Great to have you back, Josh!

We may not have alot to hang our hats on as Mets fans recently, but I sure am glad the team knows how to pick its broadcasters. Welcome back, Josh! I'll be happy to catch you and Howie on the radio this season.

That's cool! He's never responded to my support on Twitter but I'm glad to hear that he's been reading Mets' fans comments.

What a great letter to Mets fans. I'm not happy that my Mets are now sharing the same station with radicals like Sean Hannity & Rush Limbaugh but it's great that Josh Lewin will be joining Howie Rose in the broadcast booth.

Glad you are back. You and Howie have me tuning in when the Mets aren't playing well and that is a credit to how you guys call a game.

I live in the SF Bay Area , so I have never heard him call a game , But Howie likes him and that's enough for me.

I should say up front that I am not a fan of your broadcast style, or at least not the dynamic with Howie.  But I respect the hell out of your message.  It was humble and honest, and full of self-awareness.

Howie is a HOF level announcer on a technical level, and you are solid.  My gripe is the comedy routines that seem to overtake the live action at times.  Sure, we have different senses of humor...mine is you know...funny.  But at least try to be mindful of when it might be too much.

Congrats on the gig, and good luck.

Hearing that you will broadcast Mets radio broadcasts again this year brightened my day.  You have a weird sense of humor, Josh, don't ever lose it.

I, for one, am glad Josh is back.  He's extremely knowledgeable and entertaining.  I love all of his pop-culture references (especially Seinfeld) and self-deprecating humor.  Josh and Howie seem to have great chemistry and it really makes listening enjoyable.

YES!!!!! I was worried. Over the years, I have loved listening to the Mets on the radio - or online - as much as watching them - due specifically to the great talents that have manned the microphones. Josh is a GREAT torch-bearer for what has been one of the best booths in baseball for 50+ years. The best signing of the off season by far.....glad to still have you, Josh!!!

What have we learned here today?    That Josh Lewin is a great guy and we're lucky to have him on board.    Thank you, Josh.   Look forward to hearing your voice again.

Seems like a great guy. As an out-of-state fan, I can usually only keep up via radio. I thought Howie and Lewin were great last year and I'm really glad that they'll be back.

This guy's a good egg.  Wasn't totally sold on his "what did we learn today?" recaps, but his statement definitely won me over to his side.  Welcome back!

Thank you Josh.  The "two goofiest dads at the Bar Mitzvah" team has been the best thing about the Mets over the past two season.  Glad the show will go on at WOR.

When I first heard Josh, I wasn't thrilled but the more I heard, the more I liked. He and Howie are now great together. They have learned how to play off each other and it adds another degree of entertainment, other than dry baseball stats and game. I'm really glad he will be back.

Wow.  Josh ends his discussions with ellipses?  How do you do that verbally?

@ladymetfan  Ha!  "Felix and Oscar" is right!  I'd love to see some ads playing on that angle:

Howie:  "Now kindly remove that plate of spaghetti from my poker table"

Josh:  "I just googled it and it's actually linguini!  I'll just put that out there for the Twitterati."

Howie: (throwing the plate) "Now it's CHAZEREI!!!!

Josh:  Full count on Duda.

Look, if the team were any good and the games mattered, I would agree.  But with the godawful product on the field and the team out of contention in June, the schtick was the ONLY thing that kept me tuning in via internet every day from Iowa.  Just "hanging out with Howie and Josh" every day was a pleasure.

I am very eager to see how they work together when the games matter.  The main thing is that you cannot fake the passion for the Mets and the way they truly like each other and enjoy working together.  What a contrast to the Wayne Hagin years when poor Howie had to work so hard every day to singlehandedly generate some interest.
