Here is a sample of Kevin Burkhardt’s conversation with Terry Collins from before Tuesday’s game, which you can watch in it’s entirety at the end of this post:
How much is the pitching staff helped by Marlon Byrd and Juan Lagares playing such strong defense?
Terry Collins: I think it has made a huge difference. Especially in our park, because this is a big park. Even though we’ve moved the fences in it’s still a big park. Our pitchers, when they make a mistake and they see it get run down, they take a sign of relief. And now all of a sudden that changes their confidence on the mound. “Hey look, it’s time to throw a breaking ball here. If I hang it and it stays in the ball park, we’re going to catch it.” And that really helps them out.
What do you like about Wilmer Flores?
Terry Collins: Well one of the biggest things is that particular situation. When this guy is up with guys on base, he hits the baseball. He doesn’t strike out. And one of the things you’ll see is he’ll hit it anywhere. He drives runs in. He’s done it in his career. This year in Las Vegas, one of the things that any scout that ever saw him play said is this kid knows how to drive runs in. You look up and what is he, two shy of having a hundred RBI for the season already? Even though the majority of them are in Triple-A, that still tells you he knows how to hit.
