Today in Port St. Lucie, Terry Collins said Jordany Valdespin is a candidate for an outfield spot on the roster.
“He played mostly outfield [in Winter ball]. He gives us a lot of options,” Collins explained. “He really had a good Winter Ball … He started to do some things that we thought were really important. He got a lot of bases on balls in the second half of the Winter Ball season; his on-base percentage was outstanding. I want to see him more in the outfield. Certainly, with what he did off the bench last year, he’s got to be a candidate.”
Collins doesn’t think Valdespin is an option to be in a platoon due to being left-handed.
Collins also said Justin Turner and Zach Lutz will see time in the outfield this Spring, but he wants a strong defensive outfield because the pitching staff allows a lot of contact.
“There’s nobody in this system who’s a bigger threat of hitting a homer than Zach Lutz is,” Collins said.
Collins thinks Lutz is a legitimate candidate for a bench spot this Spring, as well as Andrew Brown. However, Collins believes Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Collin Cowgill have the greatest ability to cover ground in the outfield.
