Nationals acquire SS Asdrubal Cabrera from Indians

The Nationals have acquired Indians SS Asdrubal Cabrera for infielder Zach Walters, according to multiple reports (MLB Trade Rumors, July 31).

Earlier today, it was reported that the Nationals, Blue Jays and two other teams had been in contact with the Indians about Cabrera (FoxSports, July 31), while the Blue Jays and Giants expressed interest earlier this month.

Cabrera, 28, who is hitting .246 with a .305 OBP and .386 slugging, is due roughly $3 million the rest of this season, after which he can be a free agent.

miniMCavatarMatthew Cerrone: I saw zero evidence the Mets were interested in Cabrera. I recall them having limited interest this past off season, but that was about it. This time around, given he’s a free agent after this year, I can’t imagine he was high on their list. My understanding from friends in Cleveland was that, if they were going to deal him, it would be for a young, zero-to-three starting pitcher, such as Dillon Gee.

Cabrera has more is projected to hit 14 HRs this year which is more than Tejada will end up in his entire career, one season he hit 25 with 90 RBIs, Nats gave up nothing for him, why would we not upgrade at SS for very little and see if he is a fit for Citi and if so go after him as FA, Tejada should not be looked at as part of the future if your serious about winning

So much for those vaunted sources.

Not only did they not get a Gee or his ilk, they took what they could get, a nondescript infielder / warm body.

Sandy is to be lauded for: A) not being seduced by the "riches" offered by teams actually about to have a fire sale; or B) knowing that most of today's power trades were among teams either 1) one piece away from the Fall Dance & going all in, or 2) housecleaners like the Bosox, who were starting all over again.

We are in neither position. We've cleaned our house, and we're more than a few pieces away from the Dance. But we're close.

Sandy was wise to let this market pass by without him.

Yeah, Walters is probably comparable to Wilmer Flores; and a Flores for Cabrera deal would have been an upgrade for us at SS.  But I guess not enough of an upgrade that they felt like spending the $3mil to do it.

Taking the flyer on Cabrera makes sense for the Nats, as they're in the division lead and even a 1 WAR or so the rest of the way would be useful for them. But for the Mets, he wasn't going to make much of a difference.

Personally, I'm more disappointed we didn't snag Stephen Drew for nobody (which I suspect could have been arranged, assuming we'd pick up the $5mil he's owed). Drew's numbers look awful, but he can still hit righties, and a Drew/Tejada platoon at SS would have been at least league average or so at SS.

I heard that TC has a Tejada tattoo!

cause the ownership and alderson have no idea about what it takes to win rather have anyone other then Tejada.

Still, the Nats got a MLB ss for a 25 y/o AAA player with power but a 3% walk rate.....meanwhile the Mets have a bunch of those type of players in the minors.  Tejada, possibly the worst MLB SS the past 2 years, still playing every day.

Just what we need. Another mediocre bench player.

Who cares? Mets would never get anyone anyway because Sandy won't buy. We haven't gotten a major league player during the season since 2009.

is walters a big prospect?

Just got done watching game 6 of the 1986 world series. Will I ever see that again for the Mets in my lifetime?

mean to tell me we couldn't trade a 12-15th ranked prospect in our system for him? Bad move not trying to

Gee for a rental? C'mon now.

Amazing that Cerrone has friends in every city!  I lived in Cleveland and don't know a soul there.

Cabrera is not worth a front-end starter.

Matt has friends all over the country; and they all say nothing will happen. Boring friends.

He's a sub-par SS at best, and isn't easy on the eyes. I was watching MLB network and Rockies were asking for Wheeler and Nimmo sprinkled with other prospects for Troy Tulowitzki. I feel Wheeler and Nimmo is a fair asking price. Even though a deal is not happening by the oppinion of the popular concensus.

he's an upgrade to the present SS situation , but ONLY if they get a quality LFer and David goes back to being David.  The Mets are already getting high end production from one middle infield position...looking for it from two would just be gluttony.

I wouldn't give up anything great for this guy, he's a good player but not worth giving up anything important to the team...might as well try to sign him in the off season.

Is he better than Tejada?  Probably.   Is he that much better, as a rental, to give up anything for, and pay more money for?  Not a chance.

Lets keep writing articles about players mets have no interest in. I really hope I win the lottery tonight so I can buy metsblog and fire matt

While Id much prefer we go after Castro, if Cleveland will take Cabrera for Gee I think we gotta do it. We simply have too full a rotation.

Matt, just because today is the trading deadline and other bloggers who cover teams that are in a playoff race have things to post about doesn't mean you have to post about every player the Mets have zero chance of trading for.  The Mets have no need to trade for a rental so they aren't buyers.  They have next to nothing to sell so they aren't sellers.  Take the day off.

Commentary past "is due roughly $3 million the rest of this season" seems superfluous.

@grillruben The 2nd wild card is a nice thought, but not all that realistic to waste someone like Gee on a rental player.

Why? That doesn't make the team any better.

Well, the most compelling argument is that he stinks.
