Taylor Teagarden had a nice debut for the Mets

Thirty-year-old Mets C Taylor Teagarden hit a grand slam Tuesday after being promoted from Triple-A before the game.

He and Collin Cowgill are the only players to hit a grand slam in their debut with the Mets.

The Mets enter today batting just .172 in 64 at bats with the bases loaded this season.

“I think he was trying to sneak a fastball by me,” Teagarden said after the game (ESPN, June 11). “It just caught a little bit of the plate. I was trying to shorten up and get a base hit. It was just a little bit elevated for me to drive it out to right field.”

The former third-round pick is a career .206 hitter with a .266 OBP in 163 big-league games. He’s hit 20 home runs in the majors, playing for the Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles.

He was designated for assignment by the Orioles on September 1, 2013, and signed by the Mets to an incentive-laden, minor league deal this past winter.

So who plays tonight, Recker or Teagarden?

i love David too and anyone who bashes him is nuts but man we need him to get on track. There is no way were going to win consistently with him putting up the kind of numbers that he is with men on base. I can't get over the fact that he's been that bad. To me its gotta be all the pressure he puts it all on his shoulders. He knows this whole lineup basicially stinks and he's trying to do too much. Really need him to just shorten up and be better at situational hitting

Listen you guys all are in love with Flores. Not for nothing he hasn't consistently produced when he's been in the lineup. I'm not a huge Tejada fan as i think his projection will be a solid backup middle infielder but right now he's making solid contact pretty much every AB and he's playing nice defense. Also his on base % is 348 right now and i think were gonna see him leading off for a while. and to me its stupid jumping all over him. Tejada on a good team can play SS everyday. Problem is this team hasn't gotten good production from Grandy, CY is downright miserable Duda at first is 50/50 and Darnaud was brutal. So everyone comes out and wants to bash everyone. If the guy we had were doing their job this wouldn't even be a topic.

Can this team go one game without the bullpen giving up a run? That's our biggest problem. If they could hold a lead we'd be a winning team.

As bad as the offense is we've had enough runs to win. It's our relievers who are failing.

TT went yard hitting to the opposite field. TdA should be working on using the entire field while he is down on the farm. Other Mets should work on it as well.

Hate to sound negative (oh, who am I kidding?) but you all realize that we have just seen a medley of Teagarden's Met career highlight. Those other three AB's show he fits right in with the Met catching squad. The guy does handle pitcher's well but the team remains in desperate need of a backstop that can actually HIT. In a related note, anyone else notice that Tejada posts a higher OBP than David Wright?

I can't take this team real serious as long as Terry is in love with Tejada who has not one single facit of his game that is top 20 in the majors. He excels at nothing tool wise.

I think TT will be another Rod Baroas  or John Buck.  All or nothing.

I have made this comment as well as seen it from others. The Mets show know emotion when they play. This happened again last night after TT slam. It just seemed like oh well  ho hum.

@Kenneth Meltsner Yes, Wright is struggling, but it's why the 8th place hitter's OBP in the NL is utterly meaningless.  You  have fool managers like Sandberg walking Tejada every time up intentionally to face the pitcher.

@mets2death he played yesterday. he went 2 for 4 with a walk. he is now 3 for 5 since being sent down.

Enjoy the grand slam and the fact it won a game for us. No one is going anywhere just yet, most of all TDA.

From what I see, Tejada is outplaying Flores right now. I like Flores and would like to see him playing also, but you can only play one guy at a time at the position.

@gpopper  Outplaying Flores? Tejada's had a couple of good weeks, but was awful for almost a year and a half prior to that. Flores really hasn't played. If Tejada will continue to play, why was Flores called up in the first place?

If you dripped,it on the floor, I might have seen it. On this blog, a post like that usually reeks with truth. I stand corrected .

There's a saying, don't tell me what you've done, tell me,what you're doing. Right now, Tejada is playing well enough to stay in the lineup. What he did the last year and a half is gone. What he's doing now,is what counts. Again, I think Flores is getting a raw deal sitting on the bench and not playing. When Tejada starts screwing up, then it's Flores chance to show his stuff. If Terry doesn't give him that chance, he's wrong. Tejada is it for now, as of today. With Terry, you never know what tomorrow brings.

Because Tejada is, obviously. I agree with you Flores shouldn't be rotting on the bench. But, Tejada has been playing good defense, hitting much better, he's the one playing. Talk to Terry, he makes the lineups.

Yes. And 11 for 38 with 2 HR and 5 RBI in his last 10 games. I can give you Wrights and CYs lines too. It is what it is. I disagree with most things Terry does, so there's no discussion there. I don't care who plays SS, Tejada or Flores. I care that whoever it is produces. I like them both, but don't think either one will be with the Mets all that long. They'll be gone when the next "hot" prospect comes along or we make a trade for whoever. They may very well become great shortstops and players, just somewhere else. It's the nature of the Mets as of today.

Hey, I think they treated Flores like garbage, as they did Lagares initially. I can't change that. But, right now Tejada is doing a good job, so he's playing. Next week it might be Flores. It's Terry doing his thing, unfortunately. Not disagreeing with you, just saying what it is for now.

@gpopper  CY shouldn't be playing either so you get no argument from me there. Wright shouldn't even be in this discussion based on his body of work over the years.

If the Mets were relevant right now, I could go with the whoever produces argument. Since they're not, they should see what they have in Flores. He may be exposed at SS and may not be the future, but it's time to find out. At least see what his bat is.

Wright is in the discussion because he hasn't done a thing lately. His RISP numbers are abysmal. If they play Flores, I have no argument with it. My whole thing was Tejada is playing fine right now. I agree we should see what Flores can do, doubt it will happen. You'll get an argument on both sides of whether we play the "kids" or go for it now. Remember Tejada is still only 24. We can beat it to death and still be at the mercy of Collins.

Pete Brilvitch

@gpopper  Granted Wright hasn't done much lately, but he's also never had a year like Tejada had last year. He also wasn't batting under .200 for most of this year like Tejada was either. Based on his body of work, you'd think Wright will eventually start to play well. I don't have the same confidence that Tejada can continue to play well.

gpopper

I like Wright a lot, always have. I believe he will get it back soon enough, based not only on past performance, but on the player he is. I threw his name out there to show that anybody and everybody has bad times. As for CY, I would be happy if he was gone yesterday. It was a desperate and terrible signing by Alderson. Terry continually plays him for what reason I don't know. Either he is brain dead or Alderson is pulling the strings. As for the Tejada/Flores drama, we'll have to stay tuned. I don't think we disagree all that much really.
