Mets to audition internal players for 2013

“With their postseason hopes long extinguished, the Mets will use the remainder of the season to audition players who may help next season,” writes Marc Carig of Newsday.

Carig says Terry Collins could use a “Spring Training style” method so to be able to evaluate as many pitchers as possible down the stretch of the season.

For instance, Collins could begin using a combination of Chris Young, Jeurys Familia, and Jenrry Mejia in a game.

Going into play today, any combination of three Nationals’ wins and three Mets’ losses will eliminate New York from the race in the National League East – the Mets tragic number in the National League Wild Card is 15.

That is what this time of year should be used for in situations like the Mets are in. Look, I want the Mets to win as many games as possible no matter what the circumstance, but if the organization is intent on improving their big league roster for 2013, they need to first see a) what their current parts can do and how they might be able to contribute, and b) showcase players for potential trades so to improve from outside the organization as well. In some cases, the results will not be pretty (such as yesterday), and the reality is that all of the questions are unlikely to be answered either.
