Stephen Drew Rumors: Mets, Red Sox, 2 others still in, Drew ants $14M

The Mets are Red Sox are among the four teams currently showing interest in free-agent SS Stephen Drew (Bowden, Feb. 18).

However, based on information from a source, Drew may still be seeking as much as $14 million a year, which the Mets have no interest in paying (Puma, Feb. 18).

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

Good, nor should they… that’s too much for Drew. He’s not great. He’s good. He’s useful, especially if he’ll play other positions, which he seems willing to do. Frankly, I don’t mind the idea of him giving two years, because I think he could play a role on next year’s team as an all-purpose infielder. But, $14 million a year is crazy talk, especially if he still thinks he’s getting a three-year deal or wants an opt-out in his contract.

I want to make this plea out to Mets ownership. Think about this: with all this Derek jeter talk be bold and go out there and sign Drew! and if you have a set on you sign cruz as well and this town will be knocked on there rear end! METS OWNERSHIP MAKE THE DEAL AND TAKE BACK THE BACK PAGES AND THEN I AND MANY MORE WILL COME BACK TO CITI FIELD!!

$14 mil for 2 yrs is a stretch for Drew and he want it Per Year. Please stop writing about Drew, he is past tense in my book. Enough already....move on.

Ya know what?  F him.  He's a greedy man who turned down 14 million a year and is now having a tantrum because he can't get that back.  I'd stop taking Boras' phone calls for a while and stick Flores out there for two weeks.  What do you have to lose?

This guy is smoking crack if he thinks he's gonna get that . It's spring training and you're warming up at you're agents facility! I'd like him on the mets but 14 million price tag when you have no market, piss off and stop drinking that cup of greed!

What makes anyone believe that Drew wants to be an "all purpose infielder" just because Boras said so? (A ploy to get more teams involved) From what I can find out Drew has never played anywhere else but SS as a pro player (1000+ games)

If Drew would be an all purpose infielder next year, who plays shortstop. Bottom line is that Drew makes them a better team and a two year deal is worthwhile.  But it is the Mets budget that is the problem.

Please stop making these same story run everyday. It never fails. No information just the same misleading headline. Ok we get it, Stephen Drew is a free agent. Bos, NYM, Minn, and Hou are the teams in the mix. Yesterday the day before, the day before that, and prob tomorrow we will read stephen drew is available and a fit for the mets but they are balking at his price. At this point i dont even want him becuase ive read about it everyday for no reason

I won't take the poster on directly, but I will just comment, as is my privilege like everybody elses, that someone on here IMO, has been a bit too rude and gotten overly personal.  If folks want to criticize, I don't care - that's partly what this comment section is about.  Maybe it's not my place to say it, but well, I'll just ask those on here to keep things civil.  I know I'm not the moderator, so screw me, but thanks for your consideration:)

Maybe the grammar is why he doesn't write any more. If you don't have time for us, then stop what you're doing, invest the money you've banked since 05 and go back to high school sports for the post

I wouldn't give him 14 million ants or dollars.

OMG and the new headline is:

Drew ants and Alderson want!

Drew ants 14M, and he also ants a special bonus clause for an extra 1M if he gets hurt diving into first base during his tenor with the Mets.

This is crazy talk.  With all the amazing contracts that Boras has gotten his clients, there have been a few times that he hasn't done them any favors.  Sure, like for GMs, it's not always possible to read the market correctly and his wait-it-out strategy can sometimes not work well.  Sure, some of this has to do with the more recent change to the rules with draft compensation, which hurt Bourn and will probably hurt Drew, too.  Or was Bourn hurt more by the strategy and also maybe Boras' reputation hurts him, as I would imagine that teams don't even want to bother with his clients, if they are not super-talented, as they might have to overpay.  And we still hear the rumors at least of an exorbitant asking price for a decent, but not amazing player.  They say that necessity is the mother of invention, so that might prove to answer one of the reasons that Boras has his own spring training camp:)

so the Royals now have a higher payroll than we do. Calling us the KC Mets is now insulting to the Royals.

I would pass if he's insistent on the 14 mil per year.  Simply put, not worth it.

That doesn't mean though that the Wilpons and Alderson should be allowed to sit back and do nothing in terms of a willingness to spend on new players.  An 85 million dollar payroll is embarrassing for a big market team in a non-salary cap sport.  It's not that they should spend for the sake of spending, but they should be actively looking to make the team better, and that generally entails a willingness to spend (which of course is always the issue with the current regime).

Drew ants $14M says the "lead writer" of the worst major sports blog in history.

And before the pathetic defenders of this utter clown come out from under their rocks, I only come to read the headlines in case this dbag might break news, and I could not help but comment on a headline so idiotic that has now stayed up for 45 minutes.

@1harris1  willingness and ability to spend are the key components.Despite Sandy's protestations to the contrary i think they are hamstrung by the bank loans as well as their overall obligations.

Bottom line the Wilpons don't have the resources anymore post Madoff to own a team in the New York market and Alderson just spouts the party line about how great things are when he know better.

DIY Degree

@1harris1  Exactly. The FO should tell us why having an $85MM payroll is a competitive advantage and gives us a better shot at winning than a higher one. They haven't done anything close, merely pointing out the existence of teams like the A's and Rays that are in such a different place than us (organizationally) that the comparison is laughable.

@ReedRothchild  Then start your own sports blog you useless, pathetic dbag. So much hate for something as small as a blog post. Nice life you have there.

@ReedRothchild

Mr. Reed, here's a little reality check. Matt is NOT here to "break" news. If you want to read about breaking news, follow guys like Lennon, Rubin and Martino. In other words, the beat reporters who check their sources constantly. What matt does is check what those guys are writing or tweeting.  However, what Matt does provide is a forum for discussion, and it's also given a lot of us a good laugh from time to time along the way. Besides, whenever he "ants" us, it provides a good chuckle too. As for his silly errors, I've given up long ago expecting him to double check his work before posting. Why? He obviously doesn't think it's important.

ReedRothchild

Hahaha!

Wow are you a numbskull.

I have no hate for anything except pathetic, lazy people like Cerrone who have so little respect for themselves and--even worse--for you, you idiot.

I started my own business instead. I have better things to do.

Matt sux rocks the size of large boulders.

As does your pathetic, 8th rate brain.

Excellent response!

Yeah, it is poetic justice. Everyone has fled to the two other major blogs, both of which make this place look even more like the work of someone who could not get a job writing for a high school paper.

How can he spell a word wrong in a headline and just leave it there?

Doesn't ANYONE at this blog even read the posts they publish?

Still, my all-time favorite was when Tejada tripped and got hurt last year and for weeks and weeks, Cerrone and Baron posted about how Tejada was hurt "diving into first base."

Obliviousness and apathy, thy names are Cerrone.

@hankincolo  his minions defiantly and vociferously argued with me that this site is an aggregate for news as well as providing several examples of breaking news. All this "a source familiar with the teams thinking" implies what exactly to you???

@hankincolo  He used to provide a forum for discussion.  You have to admit that it's not that good any more, with the new format and the Facebook/Twitter comments.  He has never really valued the discussion aspect.

Well, to me it implies that Matt is as full of baloney as he is of terrible writing and disinformation.

I did used to come here precisely because it used to be an aggregate for news, but there are two other sites which have become the same thing, but have writers who can write and owners who engage the commenters, and they also have developed something new, something revolutionary, something unprecedented in the sports blogging world:

When they make mistakes, they FIX THEM!!!
