Drew

Stephen Drew Rumors: He will not end up on Mets, maybe the Tigers

1:40 pm: MLB Network’s Peter Gammons said today that he would not bet against an free-agent SS Stephen Drew may end up eventually signing with the Tigers (Twitter, Mar. 15).

6:50 am: Drew will not end up on the Mets, a person close to him told reporter Anthony Reiber (Newsday, Mar. 14).

Drew’s agent, Scott Boras, said recently that he and the Mets have talked, but Drew is still seeking a multi-year deal.

The reportedly offered Drew a one-year, $9.5 million deal (Heyman, Feb. 21).

Meanwhile Terry Collins reportedly had a private conversation with Tejada this past week to tell him he’s the team’s shortstop.

Drew has been training in Florida at a private facility and is reportedly in shape and ready for the regular reason.

I think Drew is overrated and his appeal was that he wasn't Ruben Tejada.  I'll be glad when he signs with somebody so the rumors can stop.  Let's move on already...

I like how Alderson has handled this.  I would've done it the exact same way.

He's not worth $10M, and a one-year deal will show if he can handle New York's pressure.

He doesn't like it, go somewhere else.  The fast-and-loose days of Mets' purse strings are over!

I think drew will choose scott boras' house over the mets and the tigers. .... Who knows what's going on at boras' crib... fun times! Lol

Drew is going to the tigers. .. But the mets will offer him a huge contract the day after he signs with them and then tell us fans how much they wanted him. ..The mets are a joke! Luckily, football will be back in about months.

Tejeda shouldn't be the shortstop ,  Collins shouldn't be the manager and Wilpon shouldn't be the owner

Speaking of shortstops, hoping we get to see Dilson Herrera in this game.

I would think Tejada if given the chance will not have too long to prove he can play and produce. Same with Duda and Davis. Drew will end up on a team with more of a chance to be a contender.

Tejada it is, We've had to root for worse I guess. Prefer Flores personally, for now anyway

Is today's game televised?  The MLB package originally listed it, and just put up a graphic saying it wasn't available.

I am tired hearing about Drew. Enough already. If he was wanted by any team, he would have been signed by now. . .Only Drew thinks he is better than team scouts do.

Swallow your pride, take a 1 year deal and hit the market again next winter

I hope Drew has an off the charts season with some other team after the Mets lose out. If he underperforms, it will just validate the perpetual cheapness of this team.

Pretty sure Drew rejected the QO because it was 1 year, not because the 14m was too low. I would imagine he was thinking he doesn't want any part of next year's free agent pool at shortstop when he rejected it. So, I think if the Mets "low ball" him with a 2 year offer, he might just bite. Then again, the Mets may be thinking about signing one of those free agents next offseason themselves...

At this point it's looking like that's the case. It's just a shame that that seems to mean another season of Tejada though. Any word on Flores at short in the 2nd of the split squad today?

EDIT: Nevermind, just saw that he's playing 2B in that game. Q is at short.

In November was extremely excited that the Mets were paying a pair of games out here in Las Vegas this weekend. Then between the ridiculous ticket prices and the vice w that they ate once again giving off of "Wait till Next Year" I decided that I'll just open the Windows, crack open a beer, abd watch today's game on WGN. If they don't want to make a realistic effort why should we?

Maybe Boras can give the Mets a package deal on Drew and Morales because it couldn't be any more obvious that the Mets having gaping black holes at both positions right now.

i am really beginning to hate this team, but i hate the Yankees more! How can the let Tejada be the shortstop, i can understand them being cheap/broke and dont want to take on more salary but why in God's name wont they make a trade!!!??? They hang on to their mediocre garbage players like theyre gods or something? And the icing on he cake is for Collins to give Tejada a vote of confidence besides, he plain out sucks!! The rest of the league must be laughing at this pathetic circus the METS!!

Okay. Now can we finally put this non-story to rest?

Boros and Drew deserve each other.  Does Drew want to play ball or not?  I'm not sure $9.5 for 1-year is even worth it at this point.  I have to wonder about the heart and drive of a guy who turns down $14 million to stay with the defending World Champions.

If the Mets call offering the 3 for 45M deal he wants he signs in a hear beat. But thanks, no thanks. You are not worth that deal. Take the one year 9.5M deal offered to you and be great full for it. No other team has made an offer to you hence you still a FA. Wait until June and you will sign a minor league deal for the rest for the season.

Remember when the comment section was practical and we could check on our comments, etc...

Those were good days.  Before they "enhanced" the comment section.

Funny.  I think all my comments about the new format get deleted.  Of course, I cannot be certain, because I can't easily find my comments to check on them.

@DIY Degree If he underperforms, wouldn't that validate that the Mets (and everyone else for that matter) were right about him all along? Not sure how that would validate the cheapness.

Great post- it's a shame mets don't let Flores start season no real met fans want tejada

@rubiconx0  I never hate the Mets. I will die a Met, probably sooner than later on account of them. I do hate the ownership though.

@RickPetersonsJacket  Usually cause one of three things happens... 1. He wouldn't have even had this kind of a shot at this point.  2. This would be a guy making such a HUGE contract that you can't get rid of him... 3. There's really no other options available.  Yet... here he is, he's making next to nothing and can be sent to the minors with no real issues, and there are plenty of options available.  Up is down folks.

@donw  Boros has made the Drew brothers a lot of money over their careers.Steven knows that he can afford to wait it out.

@donw  Eh, no player has ever accepted the qualifying offer. Don't think it has anything to do with heart/drive. Just a bad decision. Now future free agents know to think twice

@chasesimms Stop complaining over spilled milk. What's done is done. Eventually I do think this has the potential to be better, but they released it before it was ready.

DIY Degree

@Pete Brilvitch @DIY Degree  You're assuming the Mets have the money, could easily sign him, but don't believe he's better than Ruben Tejada. I guess theoretically that's possible, but I don't see how. I'm going on the notion that they know he's an upgrade but are too broke to sign him.

So, if he underperforms, that lets the Mets off the hook. "See, we knew he wasn't worth it." I would rather he put up great numbers so the focus is squarely on the team being too cheap.

DMMP
DMMP

@krayzie @donw  Drew wants less money per year but more guaranteed money over years.  AKA I can see him taking 2 years at 12 mil per, but he's not going to take 1 year at 14.   And with next years market at SS, most teams would rather not give out that contract to a non-elite talent with much better talent hitting the market next offseason

mags328
mags328

@crafalko17 @chasesimms  What gives it the potential to be better?

And I'll understand if you don't respond because I probably won't read it. Why? Because I won't even know about it. I won't even be able to click on my name up top and had it show me my posts and those who responded to it.

@Pete Brilvitch @DIY Degree  We've been hearing about the Mets acquiring a difference maker for too long. Right now they should do what they can to make the team better, I don't see them affording a big name free agent in the next decade. It's all talk, this was supposed to be the turnaround year and we have a 75 win team....maybe.

Pete Brilvitch
Pete Brilvitch

@DIY Degree @Pete Brilvitch I believe that the Mets think Drew is better than Tejeda. Are the Mets too cheap to offer Drew something like 2 years/22 million? Perhaps. Are Drew/Borus too greedy to accept that? Probably, but who knows. Would Drew make the Mets better this year? Yes. Do you want him here long term if that contract keeps the Mets from acquiring a difference maker for next year? To be honest, I think Drew is a mediocre talent and I'd say no.
