Stephen Drew Rumors: A’s are not interested, would need to move Lowrie

The A’s are not considering signing free-agent SS Stephen Drew, which would require moving Jed Lowrie to second base, sources say (Rosenthal, Jan. 29).

Earlier this week, a report indicated the A’s and Twins emerged as possible landing spots for Drew (Martino, Jan. 27), who may be willing to play multiple positions, according to his agent Scott Boras (Gammons, Jan. 15).

“I think that Stephen will always have other opportunities,” Mets GM Sandy Alderson said about his team’s chance of signing Drew (DiComo, Jan. 29). “We continue to monitor his situation. … I know there’s been a lot of speculation about Drew and the Mets, but at this point, that’s what it remains — speculation.”

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

Billy Beane, quick suggestion, how about you sign Drew and trade Lowrie to the Mets? I know, I know, you’ve told anyone who’ll listen that Lowrie is unavailable, even though you signed Nick Punto and Lowrie is a free agent in a year. But, Sandy Alderson and his staff really like him, you know this based on talks around last November’s GM Meetings, so why not rekindle talks? I say give it a whirl…

The Blue Jays are now in the mix and the Red Sox appear willing to give Drew a multi-year deal (Heyman, Jan. 28). In addition, while there have been reports indicating a lack of interest from the Yankees, a follow-up report said they are still very much involved (Heyman, Jan. 28).

In a poll that ran on MetsBlog.com last week, 52 percent of more than 8,000 voters said they would like to see the Mets give a two-year deal to Drew, while 35 percent preferred he get just a one-year contract; 4 percent were willing to go to three years, while 9 percent said he’s not worth signing at all.

It's pretty sad when the moderator of a blog has to resort to mock groveling to give his take on a particular post.

gotta give the Drew stuff a rest until something actually happens with him.

why would we want to trade for lowrie, when he's a fa after this year.  makes no sense?  We could just sign him after 14 season and not trade anything away.

breaking news: rotoworld just reported that alderson said flores might get a look at SS this spring

not convinced any of these reports of other interest in Drew are real ... they don't make sense, each of the other teams need their first round picks and/or have other SS.  I think by this time most teams have filled out their budgets, and an 10M is not so easy to come up with unless they were targeting planning on somebody from beginning.  I think these reports are misinformation, i think Sandy is playing it out, and i wouldn't be surprised to see Drew in NY

I'm guessing he'll sign the same modest deal with the Yankees that the Mets are offering, or stick in Beantown.

i wonder whether some sports journalists run with articles provided by agent "sources".  Example, Martino (knowingly or ignorantly) helps Boras by tweeting that A's and Twins have interest in Drew.  Could that info have come from Boras camp, completely bogus, designed to increase pressure on Sox/Mets to increase offer?  Pretty quickly shot down re A's by another reporter with his own "sources".  A lot of BS out there, wonder how hard these guys work to verify before publishing

Don't you mean "Sandy Alderson and his staff really like LOWRIE...based on talks around last November’s GM Meetings"?

So Alderson and his staff "really likes Drew", so somehow Beane will trade a free agent to the Mets? Even when Cerrone is trying to be clever/funny, he falls flat on his face due to the inability to clarify a thought in his head.  Of course you mean Lowry.  However, the A's, unlike the Mets, have had a real plan to strengthen their team this off season and I am sure fleecing Alderson in a trade is something he will look at next off season.

Shame that Beane, a Met draftee at one point as we all know, wasn't recognized by the Mets as the smartest guy in the room.  We are stuck with his castoffs who have no idea how to evaluate talent.

This is just creepy at this point.  This obsession with this one particular player the Mets have absolutely no interest in signing is becoming troublesome.  With one of these posts I'm expecting to see black and white photos of Drew taken from a distance with a telephoto lens.  As a suggestion, maybe we can get updates from the daily weigh-ins for Met players at the fat farm, and the daily menu items for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Why would the blue jays want Drew if they have Reyes?... doesn't make sense to me

@mets2014 I read it too. If that could ever happen it would be huge for the mets. Once Flores matures fully he should be able to hit .280-.300 in his sleep.

@mets2014 Yuck.  Let's take our worst hitter, give him the most ABs at the top of the lineup,  and simultaneously bench one of the best defensive players in the league.  Great idea.

2 definite auto-outs in EYJ and Tejada, and huge questions in Ike, Young and TdA.

@slainte2   LOL you have a lot to learn about the world. What these people say has 0 effect on the world.

Hey guys Martino tweeted something lets give drew 40 million quick.

@Ron Davis Lowrie is a horrible gamble! Only reason they like him is because of money.

@dwright Actually makes sense. He can move to 2b, easy transition for a good defensive SS. And if/when Reyes gets hurt they can move Drew over. Keep in mind that Drew's offensive production will still be a plus at 2b.

My guess would be because Drew can play a few different positions and Reyes does have a knack for getting hurt.It would be great if the Blue Jays wanted Drew because they were going to trade Reyes to the Mets lol.But yeah that is not happening.

@coppola8@slainte2

suggesting competition for services doesn't affect a decision maker's position?  stirring up fan base has zero effect?

I am trying to learn about the world ... i am ... thanks coppolla

@Tarheel11 yeah I guess, but I don't think he wants to switch positions so easily when he could play ss for a number of teams and get paid a similar salary

Do you know how many innings Drew has actually played at other positions in his 8 year MLB career?  Zero.  Maybe he can play other positions ... don't know, b/c he never has, so big contract along with 1st round pick seems little bit expensive for a guy Blue Jays would play out of position.

I just think this report is Boras BS, and i think Sandy sees it, and is playing the game.  I still bet that Drew falls to the Mets.

BringBackDaveTelghe

Which makes literally no sense as nearly all of his value comes from his actual ability to play SS.

If he slots to 3b, he's a terrible player, if he stays at SS he's a good player, if he moves to 2b I don't really know what to think.  That's a pretty significant move for a career SS.

Tarheel11

Agree with that. From his perspective but if it means a bigger deal I'm sure he'd do it
