Spring Training Video Diary: Syndergaard… and Pitchers & Catchers

On the first official workout day for pitchers and catchers, Robert Brender deliver an exclusive look at the day in Port St. Lucie…

Bartolo Colon tossed a bullpen session, as did Noah Syndergaard, who was clearly the main attraction during the day at camp – for fans, media and team brass.

We've got a kid in our organization who will get drafted this year and we had an area scout from the Pirates up to watch him throw since he had minor surgery in the fall and he raved about Syndergaard. He said he's got better stuff than Harvey and Wheeler and that same bulldog nasty competitive nature to him that Harvey has. He said his curveball will be great if he continues to work on his release point and if he develops a half way decent change up he will be dominant. Couldn't believe Toronto gave him up. SA takes a lot of heat but for him to have gotten this kid and TDA for Dickey might go down as one of the best deals of all time.

You don't give up kids with his kind of stuff

Colon is the man.  He is the Mets version of David Wells.

Sorry, haters. This team isn't "crap. " Not with these pitchers in the wings. The rest of the line-up will just play catch-up.

Start the young guys, we are going nowhere anyway. Do you realize counting the catchers position that's 5 infielders and 3 of our 5 hit .200 last year. Whoever heard of 2 guys in the same infield hitting .200, never mind three.  Counting the pitcher than's four, and I didn't even count CY who hit .200 too. This is the Major Leagues?

why Mejia isn't in the discussion amazes me.

Let's just hope he doesn't pick-up some of Bartolo's dietary habits.

He's huge. Thor is HUGE. I couldn't imagine line up to face him in the batters box. He looks really impressive. Its nice to see video behind the talk.

WOW! Thor is amazing. Man!!!! Him along with Harvey, Wheeler and Niese will be a heck of a rotation. Now, I have not heard one peeb about Montero. Is he in camp? He will be the 5th pitcher in that rotation of Harvey, Wheeler, Niese, Syndergaard and Montero. There is your 2015 starting 5.

@Tarheel11 Yeah, the deal that it reminds me of was the AJ Pierzynski deal for Joe Nathan and Liriano.

Liriano didn't quite live up to expectations but a similar type of deal.

@hankypanky  Why wait Trade some of the excess pitching and get a SS  and 1st base prospect? You cant play 20 pitchers.

@nagel100  TC will never play young players over veterans, even bad vets.

@drmetfan  That's the thing. There are tons of other lesser talented guys but all can be 4-5th starters. Its nice to have that kind of depth.

I think the Mets are holding on to all their pieces to get another big piece. Let their pieces like deGrom, Montero, Familia, Black and some other young pitchers continue to increase their value this year, and maybe mid- season the Rockies decide that they can't win with one player making $20 million a year from 2015-2019.

I just feel the Mets aren't going to use the extra wealth of pitching for "patches" at SS, I think they see a chance to have a game changing pitching staff, plus may have enough leftover for a game changing trade.

@Kevin VanTassell  Agreed.  There is no sense in stockpiling if you are dealing for temporary pieces.  I also have a feeling that there will be an impact trade this year involving Gee or Niese packaged up with a few younger arms.
