The Mets will likely use a spot starter on Friday, keeping Matt Harvey as Saturday’s starting pitcher against the Tigers, Terry Collins told reporters today.

DeGrom isn’t getting called up most likely because he’s reached his innings limit for the season. Typically, the Mets bump their pitching prospects 30 innings from the prior year – deGrom threw 111 innings in 2012, and he’s up to 140 innings in 2013. The Mets are smart to be conservative with deGrom. He is two years removed from Tommy John Surgery and lacks a lot of professional experience in the minors.
1:00 p.m.: Collins never mentioned Jake deGrom by name today, but a Mets official confirmed he’s in the discussion (Carig, Newsday).
11:32 a.m.: Options for Friday’s spot starter include reliever Carlos Torres or Triple-A pitchers Jake deGrom, Chris Schwinden, Giancarlo Alvarado and Matt Fox (Castillo, Star-Ledger).
