The Mets signed Granderson! So, what’s next?

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

I like the signing of Curtis Granderson. It was totally necessary, a) given the market, and b) given skepticism around baseball about the state of the franchise. Granderson is significant step in the right direction, I’m thrilled ownership and their front office did what was needed to get a deal done, but additional steps are needed… They can’t stop here.

According to Newsday’s Marc Carig, the Mets have no plans to move Eric Young Jr. to second base, instead, they still see him as a fourth outfielder.

This may be true… right now. But, I do expect the Mets to continue talking with teams about Daniel Murphy and Ike Davis, among others. I believe the Mets are still looking for more power, be it in the outfield or on the infield, they need a leadoff hitter and they still need to sign a starting pitcher. It may not be the ideal outcome, but Young could play second, if trading Murphy means bringing more power to the lineup.

In either case, the Winter Meetings start next Monday and they’re going to be very interesting to watch…

Speaking of Orlando, MetsBlog and SNY.TV will have Robert Brender doing LIVE, two-hour Q&ACasts from the Winter Meetings next week. We’ll be taking questions, talking with guests, and bringing you minute-by-minute conversation around the day’s latest rumors here in MetsBlog.com…

If only we didn't have that bad Chris Young contract hanging over our heads. What a 7.25 M WASTE.

Good signing and the best obvious fit. However, I don't like the talk of Young being a 4th outfielder. The correct domino effect of this trade is moving EY Jr to 2B and trading 2 of the 3 1B for the SS and SP we need to contend. Right now, the Mets do not have a leadoff hitter without EY and its unlikely to come via trade unless they want to go after Gardner and make Lagares their 4th OF which makes much more sense. EY led the NL in SB and his OB% is good enough. He provided a spark last year and was a disruptive threat on the bases. At 2B, his offense is an asset, his defense will be good enough back at his natural position, and we come into 2014 with a new double play combination. If we find the right trading partner, we can package Davis, Murphy, and some very good prospects to get a very good player in return and offset about $8 million in salary. Alderson has the flexibility now to do something really big via trade. Lets see if he can pull off a blockbuster.

Gardner and Nunez for Murphy and Familia.Wilmer Flores plays second base for the Mets

Mets have too many young arms for the pen that need a chance in 2014......Black, Walters, Leathersich to name a few

Flores hasn't played SS since 2010, Mets took him away from the position bc he just simply didn't have the range to play the position, was an error machine in the minors, scouts still question his range even for 2b, lol.......He really has no position, if they don't trade him, just stick him at 1B full time in triple a and see what happens

Sign Nelson Cruz get a Ss then we can be playoff bound....

Besides Wright, Murphy is the Mets best player.. Hopefully when the smoke clears he's still wearing #28 for the Blue and Orange.

I really don't get it...how is this such a great signing?  It ties up 60 million for 4 years on a 32 year old player. It strikes me as another bad, long-term signing. What's next?  Discussions next year on how to unload Granderson. Fans disappointed. Another 4th place finish. Promises for 2018. That's what's next.

Signing Grandy for an AAV of $15 million in this crazy FA market is a huge feather in Sandy's cap. What's next? Here's what I'd love to see:

Murphy, Gee, Jayce Boyd, Cory Vaughn, and Tapia to Dodgers for Kemp (plus cash = 1/3 of his contract) and Dee Gordon - or - Ethier (plus cash = 1/2 of his contract) and Joc Pederson and Dee Gordon.

Duda, Flores, deGrom, Lawley, and Mazzoni to the Rays for Yunel Escobar and Jeremy Hellickson.

Sign Bartolo Colon.

Lineup: Young (2B) Young (CF) Wright (3B) Granderson (LF) Kemp/Ethier (RF) Davis (1B) d'Arnaud (C) Escobar (SS)

Rotation: Niese, Wheeler, Hellickson, Colon, Mejia.

4. Curtis Granderson (LF)--25 Hr/85 Rbi/15 3B

5. Ike Davis (1B) yes ike davis--20 Hr/75 Rbi

6. Chris Young(RF)---15 Hr/55 Rbi

why cant the mets leave murphey alone hes 15hr/75rbi isnt that enough

Philip Kossoy
Philip Kossoy

Philip Kossoy here...What's next is a solid #3 starter like (Bronson Arroyo) and another power bat maybee (Matt Kemp).  Dodgers have too many outfielders and will pay part of Kemp's salary so how about something like Dillon Gee & Wilmer Flores packaged to get Kemp?  Only time will tell!

I was assuming that them signing Granderson was to have Granderson and Chris Young be their CF and RF players w/ Eric Young Jr in LF to be their leadoff hitter. They are in need of a SS so I'm assuming they want to make a trade for a SS who can be a leadoff hitter, and perhaps sign a LF bat with some power like Corey Hart if he can handle the OF, or Mike Morse on the cheap. If they are going to have EY Jr as a 4th OF then I'm also assuming Lagares is going to be traded because that leaves only 1 spot on the bench and considering they have Den Dekker and even Brown and Nieunwenhuis, it would be wise to move one of the 3, the one with the most value right now which would be Lagares to get a SS.

With that said, Theres a few options that I'd like to see them pursue.

1st offer to the Astros; Duda, Flores, Degrom & Lagares for SS Jonathan Villar & OF Domingo Santana

2nd offer to the Rays; Duda, Lagares & Tejada for SS Yunel Escobar & SS Riley Unroe

Sandy now needs to engage in talks with 4 teams, maybe a 5th.

1- Cubs

SS-Starling Castro

2- Indians

SS- Asdrubal Cabrera

3- Rockies

SS Troy Tulowitzki, OF-Carlos Gonzales

4-Blue Jays

OF-Jose Bautista, 3B/1B-Edwin Encarnacion, and maybe even SS-Reyes(yes I know)

And possibly the Marlins

OF-Giancarlo Stanton

geemel

Davis and a pitcher not named harvey  gee niese wheeler montero or syndergaard for Jed Lowrie

htstvechef
htstvechef

The Mets now have 3 CFs in their OF with Young, Lagares and Granderson and I fully expect a number of calls on Lagares who really came from out of nowhere and has limited OF upside based on scouting reports.

I can see the Mets packaging Lagares, Tejada and Davis to the ChiSox for Ramirez, who would slot into the leadoff spot in our lineup, and another piece such as a bullpen arm like Matt Lindstrom or a 4th OF to balance the salaries

A.Ramirez SS

Murphy 2B

Wright 3B

Granderson RF

C. Young CF

Duda 1B

D'Arnaud C

E. Young LF

I know some here don't see Young as an everyday OF but the guy plays solid defense is a threat on the bases and would be a nice #8 hitter that can give the team some versatility

Michael Torres
Michael Torres

I think think Drew is the answer at SS with that asking price. No one talks about Flores moving to SS. Think about Flores at SS, Wright (the captain) at 3rd, Murphy ( 3rd in hits NL) at 2B, and Ike/Duda at first. Bullpen help is coming with a 4th or 5th starter coming to supports eating innings.

MMIAA
MMIAA

yeh we are going to come out and say we are moving EY to second base therefore completely devaluing Murphy in the trade market.............DUH.

Mickey Jennifer Wind
Mickey Jennifer Wind

They need a short stop. They don't need an OF guy unless you plan on benching Legares. Young is getting paid and is playing barring injury.

We do need a shortstop and a pitcher. If I can get Escobar or Cabrera I am a happy guy. Maybe we can get involved with Seattle and Tampa. Price to Seattle, Davis, and the 2b guy Nick from Seattle with mixed prospects to Rays, Escobar and prospects to Mets

Shawn Sparks
Shawn Sparks

That's kinda the point.  The Mets need to get themselves to a place where their 2nd-best player isn't defined as a 13 HR/75-RBI guy with below-average defense.  To do that, they're going to have to make significant trades.

jjong
jjong

I don't think getting Tulo and Stanton is really realistic.   More importantly, having a 4 to 5 team trades.    It is difficult enough with 3 teams, do you think 4 teams or five teams will occur.  I hardly doubt it.

@jjong

I don't think you understood. It's not to be a 4-5 team trade. Those are 5 teams that's the Mets should talk to about those possible trade scenarios.

@NYMetsLander @htstvechef

I'd have to think that the positive difference between Ramirez vs. Tejada > the Benefit of "Unknown OF that the Mets could acquire within their remaining budget"  vs. E. Young

htstvechef
htstvechef

@mcgrupp81 No, but based on what is still available in FA or on the trade market AND that would fit under the current budget constraints (Stephen Drew is not walking through that door)... I think it's an "good" option.

The Mets seem to match up well with Chicago, who need a CFand likely another 1B option

Shawn Sparks
Shawn Sparks

@rustystaub It's awfully tough on a pitcher when his defense leads the known universe in infield hits allowed and his 2nd baseman is near the top of the league in errors committed.

I've got nothing against Murph and would love for him to stay in some capacity, but you're never going to win a pennant building a team or even a middle infield around him.  He's a utility/bench guy on most any other team in MLB.  He's only a star on the Mets because the Mets suck.

@metfan9876

I'm sure your feeling was after yesterday. Anything is possible, and Sandy SHOULD look into some of this trades. It's what would make us better. Not Alexei Ramirez or Yunel Eacobar.

@xavier22

So what you expect the Mets to do? Or you really think Grandy is the answer?

xavier22

@metsstrong Grandy only cost money.  Tulo and Cargo will cost Syndergaard and Wheeler.

Not gonna happen

metfan9876
metfan9876

Well, I had a better feeling in tem signing Grandy than those two. Those hitters are some of the best in the NL and I just don't think we're in a position to make a trade to give away all of our chips.
