As I’ve said over and over again, Bobby Valentine is my top choice. The cost might detract Alderson from Valentine, although he fits the criteria he is seeking in a manager as far as him being someone with Mets ties, his ability to command respect, and his superior baseball intellect.
I think Wally Backman would be a great choice as well as far as what Alderson might be seeking, although as David Lennon of Newsday points out, he only has one year of Single-A under his belt after being out of baseball for a few years, and I can see his personality clashing with a lot of the returning veterans. It’s not to say those are bad things – I just wonder if Alderson would appoint him to the manager post given his shorter resume.
I do feel both Chip Hale and Ken Oberkfell deserve a strong look and should be legitimate possibilities as well. Both Hale and Oberkfell have managerial experience in the minors, and with Hale in particular, he is very well respected among the current group of Mets players.
