This afternoon at Citi Field, Jerry Manuel told reporters he has not been informed of any decisions regarding his job status.
“The Mets will announce shortly after the season that Omar Minaya and Jerry Manuel won’t be returning in their roles,” writes Jon Heyman of SI.com, according to ‘sources.’
Heyman says replacements will not be named immediately, as there is no evidence the team has started contacting GM candidates, adding:
“The Mets are planning to go outside the organization for the GM position and are thought to be considering several people, including former Diamondbacks GM Josh Byrnes, White Sox assistant GM Rick Hahn and former A’s GM Sandy Alderson.”
It makes sense to hold off on hiring some one since more than a couple of people they are interested in are currently working for teams still getting ready for the post season, like Jon Daniels and Gerry Hunsicker.
At any rate, the way I read this, at some point before next Wednesday, the Mets will decline Manuel’s option and set him free, while also announcing they will soon hire a new GM, letting Minaya to choose whether to stay and work in a different role or leave for a new job with a new team… then, after the new GM is hired, the search for a new manager will begin, with Wally Backman and Bobby Valentine in the mix.
