Today in Port St. Lucie, Shaun Marcum was scratched from his simulated game. Marcum was warming up when he reported pain in his neck and was unable to continue.

Marcum was put on the 15-day DL with biceps tendinitis, retroactive to March 22, on Monday.

Marcum will be reassessed tomorrow.

I am assuming this means Aaron Laffey will start on Sunday against the Marlins. Collin McHugh is also an option and, unlike Laffey, is already on the 40-man roster. If the Mets go with Laffey, they can create space on the 40-man roster by moving Johan Santana to the 60-day disabled list. In any case, it is highly unlikely Marcum goes on Sunday, since he couldn’t work today.

It’s been a frustrating spring for Marcum. He dealt with strength issues early in camp, then took a cortisone injection in his shoulder, and this neck issue doesn’t seem to be going away either. It’s amounted to only 9 2/3 Grapefruit League innings, and a ton of uncertainty about his health going forward.
