Seven or eight teams – including the Mets – have inquired about free agent LHP Johan Santana, according to someone with knowledge of the situation (Castillo).
Santana’s agent – Chris Leible of the Legacy Agency – recently said on Twitter Santana is throwing from 150 feet on flat ground with no pain.
Michael Baron, ContributorI suppose on a minor league deal, the Mets could take a flyer on Johan and bring him back to camp. I wonder if any team would offer Santana more than a minor league deal, considering it’s uncertain he will ever throw another pitch. Remember, this is a second surgery on the capsule, there was plenty of uncertainty after the first procedure, and he is now in real uncharted territory after the second. Still, I’d count on Santana, his athleticism and determination along with his talent to get back to the big leagues at some point – if there’s anyone who can do it, it’s Johan. But, it’s a big IF, and he probably wouldn’t be ready until sometime during the season, at best.
Santana has not pitched since August, 2012. He underwent a second surgery to repair a torn capsule in his left shoulder in April, and missed the entire 2013 season.
