Johan Santana 1 (Baron)

Seven or eight teams – including the Mets – have inquired about Johan Santana

Seven or eight teams – including the Mets – have inquired about free agent LHP Johan Santana, according to someone with knowledge of the situation (Castillo).

Santana’s agent – Chris Leible of the Legacy Agency – recently said on Twitter Santana is throwing from 150 feet on flat ground with no pain.

I suppose on a minor league deal, the Mets could take a flyer on Johan and bring him back to camp. I wonder if any team would offer Santana more than a minor league deal, considering it’s uncertain he will ever throw another pitch. Remember, this is a second surgery on the capsule, there was plenty of uncertainty after the first procedure, and he is now in real uncharted territory after the second. Still, I’d count on Santana, his athleticism and determination along with his talent to get back to the big leagues at some point – if there’s anyone who can do it, it’s Johan. But, it’s a big IF, and he probably wouldn’t be ready until sometime during the season, at best.

Santana has not pitched since August, 2012. He underwent a second surgery to repair a torn capsule in his left shoulder in April, and missed the entire 2013 season.

Would be a nice story to see him come back in spring training, if it's a non-guaranteed deal. Maybe he could even teach the young pitchers a thing or two.

If he doesn't come back to us cheep for a short term deal let him walk. He would be doing us a service for how much he got paid, and how little he actually played.

id like to see him back even if it is a minor leauge deal

If Johan shows he has something of quality left in the tank....he should give the Mets a big discount for his service since we paid him a bundle and got very little in return. Besides, I need a good reason to wear my Santana jersey to the games.

Hey guys first time posting here on any any SNY blog (and my name does stand for NY Isles, Jets, Knicks Mets).

Just wondering why so many people are hostile to Santana coming back on the mega-cheap, see what he does in the spring, and make him the 4/5th starter in April? They can even spot start Johan every other game if thats all he can do. Just curious what you all think.  PS I am not opposed to bringing back Dice-K and Harang either just to check in ST. keep in mind we can cut any of these guys if they can't hack it.

I would love to bring him back.If he is healthy he is by far the best free agent SP option for us.

Well even if they signed Joe Saunders for the 4th spot, if Johan was willing to take a minor league deal, would it hurt to have Mejia and Johan fight it out for the 5th spot? Even if Johan started out the season as the 5th starter, if he goes down mejia is the next man up, all u looking for is johan and/or Mejia to get u to june when syndergard is ready....

Johan on a one year deal makes perfect sense for this team so unfortunately he won't be returning . It just makes too much sense. The Mets need a another lefty to compliment Jon Niese . He's a veteran whose proven he can handle NY. I just hope the Yankees don't snatch him up.

It's a great chance to catch lighting in a bottle as Johan has always been a bulldog and now he's desperate to prove his career isn't over . What's crazy is if he weren't already with us Sandy would already be all over him . I guess he still prefers Chris Young . I understand moving on but outside of getting injured Johan played his part well with us and deserves to go out on better terms. He did give us our first no hitter and he's still a fan favorite . Like I said makes too much sense so see you in pinstripes Johan Could've been amazing !!!

He's done

This is silly.  We don't need starting pitching in July - we need it in April, so that we can defer Thor (and maybe even Montero)'s service time.

Right now, we've only got Niese-Wheeler-Gee, with Mejia as an "if he's healthy" and Torres as an "if we really need him".

This would be a monumental distraction.  Time to get serious and start looking forward, his arm could explode again at any time.  I think the Mets need to work to limit the amount of drama and general negativity around the team.  He's made a lot of money and should be set for life.  The organization needs stability, not pipe dreams.  Watching him go up in a puff of smoke is a downer the franchise just doesn't need.

I thought he was back in love with Minnesota. SMH!!

Again, Baron is wondering. Wondering foolish things. Yesterday he was wondering if the Mets would trade their second best hitter for Gardner, to act as insurance for Juan Lagares. Tomorrow, he will be wondering whether Santa Clause is going to stop at his house or not. Buffoon.

Give him a year 2 million and let him mentor mejia and the younger Spanish players he is worth it just for his character

No way he comes back to the Mets after the way he feels they treated him last spring training

Santana is D-U-N done.  You can tell by the giant fork sticking out of his back.  Wish him well and thanks for the no-no, but there's nothing he can do to help this team next year.

Move on!! NO pitcher has EVER come back from this injury!!! Yea no pain from throwing on flat ground. He might have no pain but he's probably only throwing 60-70 mph. Let's see what happens when he tries to throw as hard as possible from the mound!! No thanks on Johan!! Thank you for the no-hitter!

Didn't see that coming...I don't think it'd be a terrible idea bringing him back. It's just we need an innings eater and with all of Johan's injuries I don't know if we can count on him to be that guy.

Stick a fork in him - he's done.

Honestly, i wouldn't mind him coming back.

@metsfan611 yea, guys like Santana, Mark Sanchez, Revis, and probably Stoudemire are the reasons I don't buy many jerseys anymore!  Good thing I didn't buy a Reyes either!

jasonbay

@nyijkm To me, it's pure logic and pragmatism.  Likelihood that Santana could realistically help the team the first half of next year - VERY, VERY low.  His shoulder injury is a showstopper one time...and he's now had the surgery twice.  It's unprecedented to come back from it and pitch at the highest level.

I'd rather they sign someone else who is more likely to be able to eat innings from day 1 and keep Thor and Montero (if he's still here) service time clock from starting in June.

Also how difficult would it be for a pitcher like Santana to shift to the bullpen permanently?

jasonbay

@preplgm C'mon man, the Yanks don't want this guy, he's toast.  His injury is generally a career-ender the FIRST time it happens.

He's not going to be ready for the start of the season .  He can't help us.

Macacawitz

@preplgm Are you familiar with the severity of the injury he suffered?  Players don't come back from it.  Dr. Frankenstein couldn't revive his career.

There are a lot of teams that would give him a short-term deal. Good luck to the highest bidder.

@jasonbay @nyijkm valid points. I guess all Sandy and co. could do is observe where his velocity/pain is at and take it from there.

LifelongMets

@dave27a Well it can be argued that the result of his first comeback story caused the need for a second one.

@hankypanky I'm not saying i'm desperate to have him back,  but on a minor league deal i wouldn't mind.
