MLB: San Francisco Giants at New York Mets

Saturday’s Highlights: Lagares’ catch, Murphy’s double, Flores’ 2-run double

Juan Lagares makes a great leaping catch in the top of the second inning to steal away an extra-base hit from Brandon Belt. >> Watch here.

Wilmer Flores extends the Mets’ lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run double down the left-field line. >> Watch here.

Not off to a rousing start on offense are they.

Good/great defense is essential to becoming a great team.

Is this lineup a joke? How is anybody supposed to believe everybody in the Mets organization claiming that we're contenders this year when Terry puts out this lineup today? Why must everybody get a day off on the same day? Why must you raise the white flag before the game even starts? No Duda, no Murphy (who kills leftys), no Travis. And as everybody predicted last night, Tejada is not only in the lineup, but is hitting SECOND! SECOND! This is disturbing.

Last night- awww man this if the greatest. The Mets are awesome. Way to go Mets. Let's go Mets. We're in this. deGrom is da Bomb.

Today- Terry's an idiot

It's so damn predictable that it's not. funny. It's pathetic. At least let them play the game before you crucify TC for how poorly he managed the damn game

Gerard Farrell

So much for winning today, not with this lineup.... Not even going to watch today. I don't get it. Duda will never get better against leftys if you sit him for every lefty we face. And CY? For real? Flores will go 2-4, Grandy 1-3 with a BB, David 3-4 all meaningless singles, Campbell 1-4 and Murphy will come off the bench and get a very loud out at the warning track with 2 outs, bottom of the 8th. Quote me. Terry cares way too much about lefty-righty matchups

Wes

Eric Young Jr. hits .196 against lefties...  still better than CY.  Why does he have a job?  Call up Josh Satin -- who hit .317 against lefties last year -- and get rid of CY.

I will accept nothing less than a perfect game from Bartolo today....if not the season is over

Kevin VanTassell

After watching Mike Morse play so badly in left field, letting hits go over his head and drop in front of him, you can see why getting a guy who is all bat and no glove isn't a good move.

MetsFan1962

Repeating myself from last night, I think TC should rest DW for a couple of games and put Flores at 3B. Wilmer deserve a chance to show what he can and cannot do. Sandy and TC needs to determine his future with the Mets.

Paul LeBarron
Paul LeBarron

6 games out of the wild card and Sandy did not go get a bat. He can talk all his gibberish about value etc...this team lands up a game or two short of the WC that is all on Sandy and he should then be fired.

upstaphan

No way we win this line up. Offense will be silent all day. Terry is so clueless its predictable at this point.

Man, that Lagares catch! I'm on vacation and just saw the highlight. That kid is one of the best CFers I've ever seen. Top 5 that I've been alive to see.

Let's take these next 2 and take it from there!

Dana Smith

@SomeHighSchoolKid Travis needs the day off after a quick turnaround Noon gametime. Getting Campbell in there is smart, and a rest for Duda against a tough lefty couldnt hurt. Murphy probably needs a day off to stay fresh also, and I bet he PHs today. Uh...someone has to play Shortstop? Tejada could have a decent game at the 2 spot today. Shouldve sat Grandy too.

Some peoples memories last longer than a few days. We've seen the meddling before.

theglider
theglider

Don't bother them. They're busy.

Dana Smith
Dana Smith

@Gerard Farrell For good reason, because most hitters hit well against opposite handed pitchers. The only exception is Murphy who's hitting better against southpaws than RHPs

Dana Smith
Dana Smith

@Kevin VanTassell Agreed, and in the same game you have Juan Lagares just coasting and floating catching anything remotely close to him.

William Bonilla
William Bonilla

I agree but you gotta play Wright against the lefties...he needs to get a day off soon though

Dana Smith
Dana Smith

@Wayno Gotta rest guys and shake up the lineup occasionally. So with Duda and Murphy resting, someone has to hit 2nd. Although, I wouldve liked to see Lagares or Flores hit 2nd.

Complaining just for the sake of complaining. Welcome to Metsblog comment section.

They're facing a tough pitcher. He can't play against a tough pitcher. That'd be setting him up to fail.

theglider
theglider

Lefties are hitting .217 against Bumgarner. Today's a day to let the righties play.

theglider
theglider

Catchers rest after a night game. He'll play tomorrow.

@theglider one of the great games of the season last night and all you can do is bitch moan and be snarky?

C'mon everybody give it a break for a minute and enjoy the games

Dana Smith

@Gerard Farrell @Dana Smith  Chris Young cannot hit a fastball. He can't do it. Go look at all of his home runs this year. All hanging breaking balls. His defense isnt that great either. Honestly, I wish they would cut Abreu and C Young and call up den Dekker and Satin or something.

theglider
theglider

I'd agree except he's had a lot of success against Bumgarner. If he's going to hit anyone this would be the guy.

hubie_wc
hubie_wc

Fine with sitting Murphy. Would have played Duda and put Soup in left. Can't run Murphy and DW into the ground. Tejada is fine in 2 hole for a day. Be nice if TC tried hit n run with him.

theglider
theglider

I agree. But I'm not the one who posted this. I just replied.

Gerard Farrell
Gerard Farrell

@theglider  Regardless of the statistical history between them, CY should have been DFA'd two months ago

upstaphan
upstaphan

Its a big game and Travis is a young kid. Play him.

Duda has to learn to hit lefties at some point and his confidence and swing has never been better. Play him.

Its a big game and we need Murph's offense. Play him.

Tejada stinks. Bench him.

CY stinks. Bench him.

That is five fails for TC

theglider
theglider

I would have started Duda but don't have a problem giving him a day off. This pitcher is tough against lefties.

hubie_wc
hubie_wc

Yes Flores is 3 for 14 since returning. We're not exactly talking the next Cal Ripken here.

theglider
theglider

He got a hit yesterday. It was great. I hope Flores keeps hitting. But it was one hit. Don't put him in the Hall of Fame just yet, ok?

semperfi

Kirk has cooled off but agree with you about bringing up denDekker, he is tearing up AAA and is actually a much better defender than Kirk and not that far behind Lagares, he definitely has earned another chance at the MLB level, Abreu serves no purpose on this club

theglider
theglider

You'd have two lefties platooning?

openmind6

@UPSTAPHAN

The Mets are going nowhere in 2014. This is not a big game.

theglider
theglider

So when does d'Arnaud get a break? It's a big game tomorrow too. When do you rest him? When he gets hurt and misses a month?

Lefties are hitting .217 against Bumgarner. It's a good day to play righties.

Chapter 7

Ha thanks Wayno! but I'm here with the fam. Hopefully gonna catch a MB Pelicans game tonight, if the rain holds off. That's more my speed these days.

Dana Smith
Dana Smith

@Wayno I'm coming to find you if they win this game. It will be really funny to laugh at you.

Gerard Farrell
Gerard Farrell

@theglider  At least they can play the position. EY would be there also, so there's you're righty when needed

theglider
theglider

A shortstop who can field and a #8 hitter who gets on base.

Flores is what? I'll ask you. What is he? Potential? He's not a shortstop. If he were they'd have played him there in the minors. He was playing second for most his last demotion.

hubie_wc
hubie_wc

Had 3 hits on Wednesday. Be nice if Flores actually hit before people assumed he is a .300 hitter with power At the big league level. Let's see what he does today. He's getting a chance to play 5th start in 10 games. Do something with it?

theglider
theglider

Shortstop is a defensive position. Offense is a rarity. I hope Flores plays well. And if he does, great. If he doesn't I expect you'll be here to say so.

Dana Smith
Dana Smith

@Gerard Farrell @theglider It's either/or on den Dekker/Kirk. I presume theyll call up Matt soon but need to make a roster move. Someone has to go. They certainly cant send Flores or Campbell down. So someone needs to get DFA'd.

Dana Smith
Dana Smith

@Wayno FYI, they dont usually move players around because someone at the ML level might not play well there. Flores is a Third basemen. But we clearly don't need one. He doesn't profile at first, and doesnt have much range to play SS.

theglider
theglider

They had Flores playing second in Vegas (also first and third) because they have a fielder at short in Reynolds.

If he wasn't up to playing the position in AAA why put him there in the majors?

theglider
theglider

You want a list?

He didn't know the infield fly rule (Murphy had to yell at him to tag out the runner). He got in the way of a double play that cost us a game. He dropped two balls in the same inning. He stood there when a ball went off of Duda's glove. Murphy picked it up and forced the guy at second. It was a 3-4-5 putout because Wright convered. It wasn't a 3-4-6 putout because our shortstop froze and didn't cover.

Want more?

Rimo Chaloney
Rimo Chaloney

@theglider  And Tejada had his back to home plate on the first pitch of a game vs. the Braves and the ball was promptly hit right by him.

dminches
dminches

@Wayno 8th place hitters don't cost teams 10-12 games.  Can you even name who bats 9th for the tigers and plays short?  BTW, they are in first place.

theglider
theglider

And if he hits .226 you'll be here to say how wrong you were, correct?

Dana Smith
Dana Smith

@Wayno It's really hard to take your argument seriously and give it validity when you keep calling a player by a made up middle school insult name "Reubum". Just for the sake, I hope he goes 3 for 3 with a double an RBI and 3 runs scored today.

theglider
theglider

So you'll be here saying Flores can't hit? Because you tend to vanish when you're wrong. Like Canos hit last week. You complained that EY should have dove for it, saying what difference would a triple make. As we saw it would have made a big difference in a one run game. But you were silent when Seattle made it close.

dminches
dminches

@Wayno Really?  How many teams' 8th place hitters lead their team in RBIs?  Zero.  If a team isn't scoring it isn't because the 8th place hitter isn't driving in runs.  Plus, when NL teams play each other they both have 8th place hitters.  Tell me all the 8th place hitters in the NL who are making a big impact offensively for them.  Zero.  Maybe I need to explain baseball to you.  The Mets don't score because the middle of their lineup is weak, not because Tejada doesn't hit.

dminches
dminches

@Wayno And, Tejada's OBP is .355 which, according to you, "turns the lineup over:" even if it is intentional walks.

dminches
dminches

@Wayno Flores has not proven he can hit better than Tejada although one would expect he could.  But you then weaken your infield defense.  Choose your poison.

When the Giants won the WS in 2012 their 8th place hitter hit under .250.  Please don't tell me that an 8th place hitter is critical to any lineup. If you are depending on that place to drive in runs you have bigger problems.  Add a real RBI guy to this lineup to bat 5th and play left and no one would care who plays short and bats 8th.

The fact that you yourself define it as "rare chances" proves my point.

dminches
dminches

@Wayno Now you are being a jerk.  Did I say he was an all-star?  .355 isn't a good OBP for an 8th place hitter?  What's Crawford's OBP for the Giants?  And they are in 2nd place?  What's their 8th place hitter's OBP?  .214.

I would not pursue either Tulo of Ramirez.  They are both hurt too often and cost too much money.

dminches
dminches

@Wayno I never said that.  They need to get a real RBI guy to play left and bat 4th or 5th.  That would be biggest move they could make.  If they do that, harvey comes back and Wheeler and degrom continue to improve they will be in contention for the playoffs next year.  If they can improve as SS, even better, but I would not make it Flores since defense is too critical when you have great pitching.

No?

And I agree that CY, EY and abreu should all be gone.
