Sandy asks Padres to speak with DePodesta

Padres GM Jed Hoyer told 1090 AM in San Diego that Sandy Alderson has requested permission of the Padres to speak with assistant GM Paul DePodesta.

Last week I said two people told me Mets were making progress in their effort to add DePodesta and J.P. Ricciardi to Alderson’s front office.  Ricciardi is done.  Hopefully, he is successful is bringing in DePodesta, who Sam Page on Amazin Avenue recently referred to as D3PO, which is brilliant.

Like I’ve written before, he would be a great hire.  He’s super smart.  I realize he was ‘unsuccessful’ as a GM, but he’s still very highly regarded around the game for his research, critical thinking and command of the business of the game.

His Wikipedia reads:

”DePodesta has been somewhat controversial in that his decisions have been heavily influenced by sabermetric principles. He is often considered part of a new breed of front-office executives whose personnel decisions rely heavily on analysis of performance data, often at the perceived expense of more traditional methods of scouting and observation.”

Also, while in the Padres front office, he’s been writing this blog, which is awesome.
