Sandy Alderson seeking two outfielders, knows it won’t be easy

sandy-alderson1Sandy Alderson would like to acquire two power-hitting outfielders for his starting lineup, he told the media in Orlando on Tuesday.

However, he knows it will be difficult task since so many teams are in the market for corner outfielders.

“Sometimes the trade market is a derivative of the free-agent market,” he said (Rubin). “Until some guys come off the board, the trades don’t develop as fully as they can.”

Alderson said he expects the trade market to pick up later in the offseason.

I’ve been saying for a while now that Alderson would like to sign one free agent and trade for a younger, under contract bat, such as Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez. At least, that’s what team insiders have been saying since last summer. So far, the buzz from Colorado indicates Gonzalez is unavailable. The Rockies will listen, but they’re looking to upgrade their big-league roster, and I’m not sure the Mets are in a position to help them do that.

The A’s (Yoenis Céspedes), Angels (Mark Trumbo) and Dodgers (Andre Ethier) also have interest in dealing a hitter for young, under-contract, big-league pitcher, so Alderson may have options… but it seems this market will have to wait until around the MLB Winter Meetings in early December.
