Sandy Alderson said Bartolo Colon could be Opening Day starter

Sandy Alderson said Bartolo Colon could be the Mets’ Opening Day starter, but the decision will ultimately fall to Terry Collins.

Alderson was speaking to a Chaminade High School social studies class about his time served in Vietnam on Thursday, and took questions from the students. He was asked who could get the ball on March 31, and suggested Colon as the first option (Hynes).

In 2013, Jon Niese started on Opening Day for the Mets, tossing 6 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits. The Mets won 11-2.

Don't give anything to wheeler that he hasn't earned yet. Let him go out this year prove hes an ace before you let him open the season.

NO WAY! Niese deserves the start again!

Niese should get the hill to start the season off with.

I thought we had this great young pitching? another reason as a met fan to believe nothing is changing except for WOR instead of WFAN courtesy of francesa

You signed Colon to be your number 1. Period. Only other option would be Niese. Gee ( I know he finished last season as our best pitcher) is a middle of rotation or back end pitcher. And can we stop with Wheeler. You're not going to put that on a kid who pitched 4 months in the ML. Come on people!

I don't think it matters who starts. Its not like any pitcher on the team is some great mets hero or something. If Harvey was healthy he'd be the one...but after him who cares?

I would start Niece as the Opening day starter just because he's technically "our guy" for longer than Colon. But giving him the start based on seniority is reasonable though. Niece would be my choice regardless. Definitely not wheeler.

Harvey will pitch opposite arm!

Doesn't Terry have a say? (BACKMAN countdown?)

just as long as Gregg Jefferies gets to throw out the first pitch. Let's celebrate the 25th anniversary of the most over hyped prospect in Mets history

Niese and if he can't Wheeler I believe in respecting my own first . Bartolo might be great but he cheated and he has been with the team 5 minutes.

The opening day starter should be the best pitcher coming out of spring training,be it Colon or Niese,or Wheeler.

I would pick home grown Niese over Colon but either would give us a solid chance to keep that opening day record stellar

New to the chat so I'm sure it's been covered, but that is a horrible thing to do to Jon Niese.  Job should be his, no question about it.

Who cares. We have the worst lineup in MLB in terms of average, strikeouts, power.

Lesli Cutler-- You still go to games? Thanks for supporting the Wilpons  Finanancially. I Won't give them a dime. I rather go to road games and watch TV. My conscience is clear. I Want them OUT.

Wheeler has earned it less than Niese, Gee, or Mejía. You have got to be kidding.

Wheeler hasn't earned it. You've gotta be kidding.

Yankee fan, why don't you go troll somewhere else?

Colon. It really isn't close. He is currently the best pitcher we have.

Who cares if Colon is fat? Are you familiar with the concept of ERA? It stands for EARNED RUN AVERAGE. It is the most important statistic for judging a pitcher's performance. Last year, in the American League (which is the tougher league to pitch in), Colon achieved a 2.65 ERA. He also led the MLB in shut outs. It really isn't close. Colon hasn't just replaced Harvey's roster spot. He is now the ace of this staff to start the season. Niese, Gee, and Wheeler are good pitchers but none of them have the right to start Opening Day over Colon.

Wheeler...why? The kid has pitched half a season in the big leagues so far and he wasn't dominant at all. Heck, it would make sense to start Mejía over him if he's healthy - at least he's shown consistent dominance when he has pitched.

Colon, like all veteran pitchers, will use spring training to get his arm loose and build up his pitch count. He won't care about the results on the field.

Dude, literally the first sentence.

@Wayne Martiak Jr Uh huh, cuz they didn't test him last year when he finished 2nd in the American League, the one where the DH bats instead of the pitcher?
