Ruben Tejada at the dish 2

Ruben Tejada will start this weekend against Cubs

Ruben Tejada will get a start at shortstop at some point this weekend against the Cubs, Terry Collins said Friday.

Wilmer Flores has started nine straight games after Collins announced the team would start giving more playing time to its youngest players.

“Wilmer has played a week straight now,” Collins said (ESPN, Aug. 16). “There’s no reason why he can’t have a day here and there.”

Flores is hitting .250 with no extra-base hits and no walks since taking over full time, during which Tejada has just two at bats.

“He’s keeping himself ready,” Collins said of Tejada. “When he gets back in there, he knows he has to help us win.”

Flores, denDekker, dArnaud should be playing everyday until season ends and you will have a much better idea for you offseason plan, a day off here and there for dArnaud is understandable but not for the others, TCs man crush for Tejada has to stop, put him at 2nd against lefty and giveMurph a day off but let Flores play, at 23 he does not need a day off and the constant question mark in his head, I would hate to be a young prospect playing for TC, who has this guy developed at the MLB level, only development guys get are when they get sent down and play for Wally for a couple of weeks, TC has no clue on how to help a guy get back on track and is constantly playing musical chairs with starters and bench players

Since when do MLB players need a "day here or there" after playing for a week straight?

Flores to Murphy might just be the worst infield double-play combo in the history of MLB.

Seriously.

Only the fat piece of tanned leather TC thinks playing a week for an athletic 23 year old requires a day off.

I don't mind Tejada giving Flores at day or two of rest but why do I feel that all of a sudden Tejada becomes the starter again and Flores is riding the bench, hope not, no reason for that, Flores should remain the starter for the rest of the season, Tejada is fine as the backup.

I hope flores can just play the rest of the year out, not cause I think he's a viable option at SS, just so I don't have to hear everyone complain and moan about how he isn't given a fair shot

These posts about trading DW for bunch of prospects are hilarious. DW makes $20 million per year and has 5 more years left  $100 million. You couldn't GIVE DW AWAY at this point for a guy who hit 3rd in the lineup and has 56 RBI and a few HR. The Mets should have kept Reyes and let DW leave for Draft choice. Much harder to fill ss than 3B.

Hope Mets get their $$$ worth after the contract is over as DW is ambassador of Mets in retirement. Can we at least move DW OUT OF THE 3rd SPOT against Righties?

Inside word is Cubs have asked Mets to show Ruben when they are in town. Mets maybe looking to trade Ruben and pitcher for Addison Russel or Javier Baez

Agreed. It's TC's poor a type to justify Tejada Playing tomorrow because, in TC's mind, Tejada can help the Mets win more than Flores. Understand ably, TC' s trying to save his job

@mike23 As much as i dislike Tejada and Like Campbell i really wished they had put Flores in the OF. I would have liked to have seen him in LF and seen what he could do.

Ultimately i see both Flores and Tejada will be elsewhere next year and Reynolds will be the mets utility infielder.

@Steven Glansberg agree, that is all mets fans wanted, flores to get a fair chance and some consistent playing time to show what he can/can't do. So far he has been good enough, still work to do in the field but his hitting has not gotten going yet... but he should get the rest of the season to show his pros/cons so we know what he is/isn't and can either accept him as a starting SS or move on and go get someone new.

@Steven Glansberg  I still like to see Reynolds for 15 games in Sept. The 15 games will give me enough to see his defense.

@JimmyBX At least Wright's contract will end in 5 years. They will still be paying Bobby Bonilla until 2035.

@2ndhalffun In case you haven't noticed there is a shortage of hitters in MLB right now, almost everybody is looking for bats.  Wright would fetch a lot on the market.  He may be having an off year but i think you're nuts if you think the mets could not get a haul for him.  The problem is who would you want to trade him for?

golsf

Agreed on low trade value, and would keep DW even through a less than stellar season. BTW, he is hitting .394 against lefties this year...

Tom Gallagher

I'm guessing that pitcher would be pretty significant if his parter on our side of any potential deal is Tejada.

Is he on the 40 man roster? If not then calling him up might be a problem.

@golsf  So keep him in 3rd spot against lefties. Only 17% of the mets games this year against lefties.

2ndhalffun
2ndhalffun

@Tom Gallagher Yes if it is an Addison Russel type prospect it would be Montero and Ruben. They may want Meija and Ruben for the 3rd rated prospect in MLB. They would ask for Wheeler straight up but we can't do Wheeler for Addison Russell --we need more.

2ndhalffun
2ndhalffun

@illnagas No on MLB TV today discussing why Mets would go back to Ruben while Cubs in town. THeo is with Cubs team traveling to Game.

theglider

Actually the joke is on you. The Mets used the money they saved and were able to acquire Mike Hampton. When Hampton bolted to Colorado the Mets used the draft pick they were given and chose David Wright.

So it turns out the Bonilla money led to the team getting Wright.

@2ndhalffun @Gland1 I've always thought that getting the player's name correct was the first step in intelligently discussing him.

golsf

He is playing through a shoulder injury, because he is a "gamer" and knows his absence would hurt the team.

He is one of the best Mets in the history of the franchise and has loyalty to the club. He deserves the support of the fans. BTW, he would hit anywhere in the lineup to help the team win. He is a great 6 hitter....

They have too many players to protect this off season, so unlikely to add him and burn a spot

2ndhalffun
2ndhalffun

@Mike Herrington @2ndhalffun @JimmyBX  Yes Wright has value but what you are paying for is for more than he gives you. If eggs cost $2 and you pay $10 yes the eggs have value $2 but when you have X dollars to spend it has to be spent wisely.  At least get him out of the 3rd hole.

theglider
theglider

Russell has played 48 games in AA and you want to trade a top line pitcher for him?

Glad you're not a GM.

2ndhalffun
2ndhalffun

@golsf Yes put him in the 6th hole against Righties. He may be hurt but when asked he says he is NOT hurt. Whether or not he has been one of the most productive players in "history" does not justify he stay in that 3rd hole. You have to separate the personality and history from the current production. Next year he comes back injury free then put him back in 3rd hole.

John Ezell
John Ezell

@2ndhalffun He could be a cage free all organic hitter much like the $10 eggs in your analogy.

2ndhalffun
2ndhalffun

@theglider I want more also but he would be my target.

golsf

DW would be fine with that...sadly, the Mets have no better talent to slot into the 3 spot...the team does need upgrades in the offseason...

2ndhalffun
2ndhalffun

@Mike Herrington @2ndhalffun  Better to lose $1 million per year than overpay by $15 million per year. As Jimmy notes teh Mets did very well with that Madoff money at that time.

theglider
theglider

He might be ready in three years, if he's ready at all.

2ndhalffun
2ndhalffun

@theglider 2 years is what most project. They say his fielding is already MLB ready. He would be in the top 10 best defensive ss in MLB 1st day he steps on the field. Defensive skills project much better than the bat. He is already in AA.  Most say he will be up next Sept.

theglider
theglider

He's an if. This team has too many ifs. Potential is meaningless until it translates into ability and too many of our prospects have been AAA players.

2ndhalffun
2ndhalffun

@theglider Wheeler was a "potential" when you traded for him. TDA was potential when you traded for him. Sometimes to get a guy that will be controllable for many years and at MLB minimum you have to take chances. Mets are not winning anything next year either. I think 2015 will be comparable to 1985. There isn't another ss that is worth the $$$ that has his ceiling. Yes I hate to give up Wheeler but I have Harvey and DeGrom and Thor and Gee and Niese and Colon and Matz is coming fast and Yanoa
