Ruben Tejada hacks

Ruben Tejada will get the bulk of starts at SS

Ruben Tejada will continue to get the bulk of the playing time at shortstop, while Wilmer Flores may get start at second base the next time the Mets face a left-handed starting pitcher (Rubin, May 17).

“He’s showing us that he’s the same player he was a couple years ago,” Collins said earlier this week (Bergen Record, May 15). “This guy is really swinging the bat good.”

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

Ummm, Terry, Tejada is batting .178 during his last 54 plate appearances. He’s 3-for-17 the last five days. What Tejada are you watching?

You know, I’m really starting to be concerned about Terry’s judgement. He recently said, the reason he hadn’t been playing Juan Lagares, is because he’s more concerned with the team’s offense than defense right now. Lagares had 12 hits in the 46 at bats (.286) prior to essentially being benched before the start of the Subway Series. He has managed to get one start in that time, and naturally – now – he’s struggling at the plate.

All the while, Flores, who is just 22 years old, and who should be playing every day, some place, is riding the pine, despite being a guy who is known for his bat not his glove. Yet, he’s on the bench, while Tejada and his .139 average in May are starting every day, at a time Terry is concerned about offense not defense.

I’m at a loss. I officially have no idea what Collins is doing, because he’s doing the exact opposite of what he says he thinks he’s doing, all while saying things that are contradicted by every stat you can find.

For the first time since I can remember, Friday night I was home and completely free to watch the game. I decided not to because Juan Lagares was not in the starting line up. I can't figure this organization out. Why aren't the best players on the team? Why is there an absurd love affair with Lucas Duda and Reuben Tejada? Why was Chris Young signed when Marlon Byrd was available? Why was a ballpark with an enormous right center field built when you have David Wright on the team? Why wasn't there any Mets history around the ballpark when it first went up? Why wasn't the wall blue from the start? Why haven't we made the playoffs in eight years? Why didn't we sign Scott Kazmir this off-season? Why is there a "Letter to True New Yorkers" going around to get Mets fans to show up to the stadium to watch a New York baseball team with the eighth lowest payroll in all of Major League Baseball despite all television deal that was just written? Why isn't Nelson Cruz on the team?

Is that enough? Despite all this, I guess I'm still a sucker because I'm still a Mets fan. #FireTerry

Why in God's name did they bring up Flores? I don't think TC could find his ass with both hands.

Ugh...why? Tejada hasn't hurt us fielding lately, but outside of a couple of games he hasn't hit. Flores (and Campbell) came up to provide offense, and both have barely played. Murphy hits lefties. I'm getting more and more on the Fire Terry bandwagon.

When do we start the FIRE TERRY Talk ??? I think the management is losing games. They don't even know who their best players are.

Good job Matt.  T.C. is concerned about the front office and not the team or fans.  To add to this Alderson is overrated as a G.M.  The majority of the great pitching we have was not from Sandy but Omar.  Sandty traded for Wheeler and he's proved to be a avg pitcher so far.  Lagares is Omars signing so is Harvey, Gee, Meija etc.  we get the point.  Sandy and Collins must go!!  There ruining the team

AMEN to that...and that New York shuffle needs to stop; time to give CAMPBELL, FLORES and LAGARES  the bulk of the time in each position.  Every time DUDA comes to the plate it's depressing.  This guy would not only not be starting, but I would doubt he would make the roster to ride the pine.  SANDY stop fooling yourself, the CY signing stinks, just like the GRANDERSON one.  You failed in your evaluation of these two signings...let the other kids play and move on.  We have a splendid pitching staff, but a terrible offense and manager; that's a recipe for pitchers getting hurt trying to shut out the other team each time out because of the lack of offense.  If I were GM for one day, THE CURSE (TC) would be gone and I would find a suitor for CY.  GRANDERSON would stay only because of his contract which is not moveable and there is a slight chance he will begin to hit.  It's time to bring up some of the kids and let them at it.  This philosophy of switching players based on one day's performance is becoming ridicules and is tuning fans away from watching this team, me included.

I cant watch another game with Tejada playing.  The Wilpons are losers  ! Whish Nelson Doubleday kept his share of the team ,

The blame is on Alderson. Guy undermines everything that is good for the team.

These unsupportable comments tip the hand of the front office...poor Terry has to face media everyday ... Alderson does not but he makes these kinds of calls based on what is coming at trade deadline for short stop. Alderson needs Rubin to have some value, despite his reckless comments in spring training...let's hope that's why our Long term center fielder isn't in the line up, c young could pump up the value of a trade package

Where's this Cerrone been hiding? Great post. And while im here.....I gotta have more Lagaras. Ive gotta fever.....and the only prescription is MORE LAGARAS!!!!

JasonMiles

I watched Lagaras yesterday and was screaming at the TV and when he made that catch I was cursing out Terry Collins. he could have saved one of the Yankee games with his defense alone. The Mets have a way of destroying careers and this latest bonehead move of benching what could be one of the brightest young stars in the NL was an insult to the fans. I don't give a crap who has to sit-It can't be Juan. As far as Tejada goes his fielding has totally picked up but he shows us very little at the Plate. Collins is getting a pass and he's made some terrible calls

NY media is far too easy on Collins! They should be grilling him about his incredibly poor decisions and insane public comments. Why does he get a free pass?

Good post Matt.  What Collins is doing is just sad, on a lot of levels.

If Collins said he didn't trust Flores' fielding, that would be one thing.  But to say Tejada is a hot hitter is either lying or indicative of Collins' inability to see what's going on with his team,

There is no rhyme or reason to this mans thinking. He is clueless.

It is like the scene in Airplane when Lloyd Bridges is asked "should we turn on the runway lights?" . To which Bridges replies "No, they will be expecting that!" That is TC in a nutshell. He is a tragically flawed decision maker who is almost comical.

mique1313

Well said Matt.  What you said, I have been saying since the beginning of the season.  TC says one thing and then does another.  I don't listen to his press conferences anymore because I don't believe much of what he says.  TC appears to be caught in between saying one thing and doing another apparently to please someone in front office or to ultimately save his own skin.

Lagares played very well here in DR during winter ball. From what I saw I felt that he was going to have a good year if given an opportunity.  Lagares was hitting well before going on the DL , TC gets him back from injury and still doesn't play him regularly.  Too me something is up with this situation.  It's almost as if they don't want him to succeed so that they can play the other guys and justify the CY signing and playing EY everyday.  I hope Lagares can continue to hit well through all of this to force TC to play him more.

Marc Singleton
Marc Singleton

Finally! Matt says what smart Mets fans have been saying about Collins for a loooong time. Thing is, Alderson keeps him around, so he's equally responsible.

garystein

yes thank you Matt call it like it is -- Terry is just awful. I mean, if this game Lagares just had doesnt show the absolute need for this guy to go what will? Everything he says is disproven by every stat. It is nuts. I really cant take him. He is singlehandedly driving mets fans away. Tejada is garbage as is CY but since Sandy showed faith in those guys as starters he refuses to admit how awful they are. And its costing the development of 2 good young guys. What a joke... nothing to even say anymore

I don't understand the tejada thing either Flores needs some at bats it's a automatic out might be worse than Rey ordonez

James T. O'Brien
James T. O'Brien

If you've followed Lagares' career you've seen that he's always struggled when promoted to the next level, but the following year he's done really well at that higher level.  We are seeing the same thing now.  He was promoted last year and struggled at the plate, but now, in his second year, he's hitting really, really well.  That's his track record and it's wonderful to behold.

Frank Accardi
Frank Accardi

I don't. Under stand laguares thing he needs to play every day he moved to the majors from double a last year he has to be in there

James T. O'Brien
James T. O'Brien

Maybe he's trying to be a modern version of Casey Stengel; getting folks so wrapped up in what he's saying, often crazy things, so that they won't notice how poorly his team is playing.

TC's decisions( if it's all his)? , is a perplexing, a head scratcher. That being said, putting Ruben in the last few days, was ok. Rubywas playing better, defense up the middle is key...i'm ok w/ that...Lagares, no...no sense at all.

TC is an idiot, plain and simple. His lineup decisions are not only baffling, but also contradictory to his comments in the media. The guy needs to go along with tejada. We've given them both enough opportunity and they both have proved completely and utterly incompetent. Never thought I'd say this, but I would rather see Art Howe and Rey Sanchez in the mets dugout than these two jabronis.

Terry''the genious'' Collins needs to go..i honestly think managing in NY is getting to him.

TC LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE !!!!! The man should never open his mouth - how about one good idea - play the guys who R actually hitting the ball - is that a difficult concept? I guess it is 4 Mets management!!  FREE LAGARES FREE FLORES DUMP TC = START WINNING  HELLO WALLY - or perhaps Timmy Tufel ?  Anyone but TC PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   AY is a no win situation either he flops and we wasted 7.5 mil OR he hits & he is gone - for what - terrible move!!  Campbell actually looks like an athlete - unlike Duda - Duda

Jerry Colfer

They should trade Flores. No sense in getting his career ruined by this rediculous group of clowns. Terry Collins is so stupid with his Tejada love and his his statements about skipping Lagares for CY's offense. There is only so much stupid the fans will put up with and only so many vague comments/lies from Alderson.

@mique1313 BINGO!  SANDY doesn't want to sit CY or GRANDERSON because he just signed them to large contracts...it's SANDY calling the shots and THE CURSE (TC) going along instead of pulling out his cojones and telling SANDY to stay out of his business.

Richard Alicea
Richard Alicea

@James T. O'Brien If you recall he had his average up to the high 270 for a long time and then took a slide as he tired at the end of the year.  I'd say this kid is ready to blossom, but if they continue to handle him this way it will stunt his development and we will never get to measure his potential.

@Jerry Colfer I think Flores will eventually be a much better hitter than Duda.. and should be playing 1st everyday.

@Eric Notkin don't be hating just because of the misspell, at least he's on target with most of us who prefer to watch LAGARES on a daily basis on the field NOT IN THE PINE!

I have to agree. I like Duda, but he is just not a power hitter. His last dinger was 4/23. Flores is a better option.
