Ruben Tejada rounds first

Ruben Tejada is turning a corner, but Quintanilla is starting at SS

In Monday’s game, Ruben Tejada robbed Yadier Molina of a hit with a diving stop in the fourth inning. He started a double play in the fifth inning, diving to his left to stop a potential single >> Watch here.

Tejada is hitting just .204, despite going 1-for-3 in the game.

“I think Ruben’s starting to get going defensively,” Terry Collins said Monday. “I thought he’s handled himself very well. I think Ruben, as we get into the summer, is going to be the guy we knew a couple years ago.”

That said, Omar Quintanilla is starting at shortstop and batting eighth in Tuesday’s lineup (Mets, Apr. 22).

The Mets/Collins always seem to rotate players in and out near-randomly.  It is, for example, what we are going to be seeing in the outfield once everyone is healthy.  Or Ike and Duda.  I always have the feeling that someone has the idea that they can catch the opponent by surprise by mixing up the lineup:  "Uh oh, we weren't ready for Quintanilla in there!"  Except for platoon considerations (which they never use consistently) and catchers or aging players who need occasional rest,  if Player A is better than Player B today, he will be better again tomorrow.  A couple of hits yesterday shouldn't be the criterion either.  If the "hot hand" exists at all, it is a tiny effect.  In baseball of all things, the long run matters.  They need to make up their mind about their best bets, put them on the field and let them play.

I'll ask again.  What's a "real SS"?  Don't tell me what you don't think Ruben has, tell me what you're looking for in a starting SS for the NY Mets....

Collins has a unique ability to give the hot guy time on the bench. Jerry Manuel had a niche for that too. Does ANYONE think Quintanilla is the answer? Their ONLY plan right now would seem to be let Tejada play another few weeks. IF his average is still around .200 then you start talks with Drew and sign him the day after the draft.

Not for nothing; But, why does TC bench a player (Tejada) when he has made some good plays at SS lately? He is hitting no worse than anyone else on the the club. It makes no sense to me.

Tejada is complete garbage, but it's mind-blowing that he has probably the best defensive game of his career and then subsequently gets benched. I don't see the future, but I'm pretty confident Omar Quintanilla isn't going to do s*** tonight against Wainwright.

I actually CAN NOT BELIEVE THIS. Let Runen play, he is finally doing something and Terry sits him. Classic.

Terry is a total moron.

Period.

Tejada may be the problem but Quintanilla is not the solution.

This team is playing good baseball overall and deserves a real shortstop.

Not4Nutten
Not4Nutten

Omar had the worst range of all shortstops last year and finished 30th defensively, thats why when Terry was with the Angels the players signed a petition to have him removed and they fired him!

Quintanilla will be fine until he gets overexposed to MLB pitching. Neither is very good. But, consider this, while Tejada is a struggling young player with limited talent, Quintanilla has been seen by the league as so limited that he's 32 and is still arb eligible until 2016.

Play the hot hand, when it cools, play another. Lather, rinse, repeat, until you have a real shortstop.

The body language of this team says it all, their isnt a player who wants to play for Terry! The Cards paid 50 mil for Peralta check his non drug stats this year! Go Ruben!

I've been down on Tejada as anyone, and I do think the Mets need another SS to win.  But these are facts:  He's still just 24.  In 2011 and 2012 he contributed nearly 2.0 in WAR in each year.  My impression of him last year was that his offensive struggles carried into the field.  That does not seem to be the case this year.  I still think he's on a short leash, but he's not out of rope yet.  Give him 2-3 more weeks and see if he's showing signs of hitting like he did two-three years ago.  Guys that young don't usually have (whatever limited) skills vanish overnight for no particular reason.  (Now Granderson...)

Come on Matt!  It was one game!  Don't pronounce the guy as the answer at shortstop based upon one game.

I wish Matt would do a secret ballot of all the GM's in the game and see which ones would say Tejada or Q would even be on their team.  I would bet 95% say they are not interested.

The answer to this is that they BOTH need to go. Lets face it , its not Collins fault this team has stunk, but we need a younger smarter guy for the job. A guy who can represent a turn of the page. Collins is the face of these putrid past 4 years. Just need a change

Just bring up Flores and put him at SS everyday!

Mike Woodson is gone...there is now just one horrible manager/head coach left in this city.  TC needs to go next.  Not because of sitting Tejada, but if this team actually adds a bat or two over the next 12 months they will be legit contenders; and TC cannot lead a legit contender.

I've started to turn the channel when Tejada comes to bat.

WHY IS HE STILL OUR STARTING SHORTSTOP?? I have never seen a more inept player besides Quintanilla. They both have zero tools. There is a viable option available on the cheap in Stephen Drew and I can't for the life of me understand why Sandy hasn't pulled the trigger.

We trade Ike Davis for what looks like nothing (I know the PTBNL could be a draft pick, but still..), yet we have this glaring black hole at shortstop. Sign Drew or trade for Owings/Gregorious/Franklin. This is about 2 years over due.

Christian Eckart
Christian Eckart

Quintanilla is a better shortstop and hitter than tejada what more proof do you need. In my opinion neither of them are the future but the Mets need to stop thinking about the future and think about the present and put together a good veteran team around David instead of putting all their faith in these hopeless prospects. No team in the history of baseball has won a pennant or world series with a team full of prospects.

@Max Denby  As someone already posted below, Q has good stats against tonight's starting pitcher. Imagine that, Collins trying to manage his team successfully, and getting criticism from someone who hasn't really thought the whole scenario through.

nncyel

@pochemu  He's being paid over a million dollars to manage a major league baseball team. And you are an anoymous blog poster wasting everyone's time posting banalities. But he's the moron. Ok.

@pochemu  TC Respons: 'Err, Umm I think,. well, i think this is not true.  Really, um, well when you think about it, umm, my players really turn the corner and i umm think i have something to err do with that. ummm. what is the question?

@dreamer3kx  Who knows, maybe Tejada enjoys sitting on the bench.  Then he does have to lumber from base to base...

What body language? The body language of the team celebrating during the last two wins? Huh?

helloboy

What is the point here? What is the correlation between Ruben and nobody wanting to play for Collins?  I am totally lost.   What someone paid for another player has nothing to do with the Mets and Tejada.  Plus, nobody knows what years Peralta did drugs and didn't, unless you were the one injecting him.   If you are implying Tejada is as good as Peralta, you are just wrong.

Plus, if nobody wanted to play for Collins, why are they 10-9?  Collins is considered a players manager and I expect the players actually like him, personally.  Of course, this does not make TC smarter as a manager.  I do not think effort is the issue here.

hankypanky

"When players have good days, Terry sits them the next day . . . he really is just a horrible manager" maybe Terry has figured out what you just said: "he is arguably the worst starting ss in the league."

Which is it?

nncyel

@Victor Triguero  You really ought to look at the stats for a number of other teams shortstops. For example, the Pirates-Reds series. Clint Barmes .167; Zack Cozart .143. There are others. Familiarity breeds contempt. And I'll beat you to the punch, a bunch of shortstops who are considerably better than Tejada. It would indeed be nice if the Mets had Andrelton Simmons on their team. They don't. Get over it. I give you credit Victor - you're probably the most voluminous poster on this blog. However, you are also relentlessly negative about almost everything associated with this team. And yes the negativism on this blog is incredibly frustrating.

Tejada is decent so far Q walks a lot and it may be more the hitting coach than TC

Mark Shulman

@mike23 He is not even hitting .250 in the minors. He has probably less range then Tejada. The Mets are above .500 lets be happy and give support to the METS as a whole.

@patspads I'm not arguing in favor of TC, but you can not get on him for benching a guy for being an absolute albatross at SS.

If Drew could be had on the cheap, I'd imagine that he'd be here.

Justin Casale

I also want to point out that as a starting shortstop for FOUR YEARS, Tejada has averaged .5 home runs and 18 RBI per year. I don't understand what Terry means when he says Tejada will be the player from two years ago. He has been the same (insert any negative adjective) player his entire career.

Max Denby

Yes, b/c everyone who posts on a blog is worthless. Do I need to tell you my salary to make you happy?

@mrgee  i don't see a problem with the mets body language either. i don't get the idea that mets players dislike playing for terry either. that said, i don't always understand why terry uses his players the way he does, and this is a good example...i would like to know the real reason for resting tejada after yesterday's game. at this point i have no idea why he would not play tejada tonight.

helloboy

@hankypanky  In this case, Q is hitting 4 for 12 with 2 doubles off of Wainright, so he gets the start.

Peralta is hitting .169 without the roids.

helloboy

@nncyel @Victor Triguero  Clint Barmes has the worst Owar in the league.  Of course, he is another planet better than Tejada defensively.  I do not think Cozart is really that good either.

This does not make up for the fact Tejada is not that good and has no real tools.  The fact is the Mets have no payroll and plenty of trade chips and have no reason to stand for such a substandard player.  It should be EASY for them to acquire one.  They choose not to. This adds to the frustration of living with Tejada, since nobody thinks we should have to based on these factors.

helloboy
helloboy

@Mark Shulman @mike23  But he is picking it up.  Flores had a terrible start and his average is coming up now.  I am not a Flores fan or think he is the long term answer.  On the other hand, he would surely be worth many more runs than Tejada is.

patspads
patspads

@BringBackDaveTelghe @patspads  Agree 100%.  Tejada is garbage...i have no problem with him not playing despite making a great play in the field last night.  In general, i just believe Terry is not the right man to lead a team into the playoffs.  So if the roster is on the verge of being upgraded (hopefully), then the manager should be upgraded as well.

helloboy
helloboy

@Justin Casale  They try to hide is substandard play by pointing to his BA, which looks good on paper, but is pointless since he is a singles hitter with no speed. Unless someone homers, it takes 2 hits to drive him in since he probably does not score on most doubles.  With a pitcher and EY hitting behind him, it becomes unlikely that he will score or drive in many runs.

nncyel

@Max Denby  I didn't imply anything about the relative worth of our friend pochemu, or ask him how much he was making, only that someone making a million dollars a year to manage a major league baseball team is probably not a moron. Whereas someone posting banalities on a web blog could be, and probably is more likely to be than a successful professional baseball manager. So no I don't need to know your salary unless you insist on posting banalities that don't add to the discussion. Then it could be relevant.

kcmetsfan

@nncyel @Victor Triguero  nncyel i agree. all the negativity is, well, unfortunate. that said, i think it may have been a little much to call victor "self-centered," none of us really know what is going on in his head when he writes. but, yeah, folks, i think we can be a little more constructive in general when posting our comments. lets go mets!

nncyel
nncyel

@Victor Triguero @nncyel  Who do you think posts more than you?

Perhaps I overstated, my apologies. You must admit though that this blog has an overall very, very negative tone to it - perhaps you only contribute to that tone over Tejada and Collins - perhaps.

Why not like a player that is on your team? I hope Tejada does great - what's the point of hoping he fails? Collins is an average manager. He's not great, he's not terrible. Again what's the point of disliking him? Managers don't matter that much anyway. Kirk Gibson either won or came close to winning manager of the year a couple of years ago. Now his team is the worst in baseball. Gibson all of a sudden became a terrible manager? No.

And by the way, when Terry Collins says something, he's balancing a need to provide some information to the fans with his primary role of helping his team win by bolstering his players. If you weren't so self-centered you'd realize that no one is trying to force feed you anything. Collins is trying to heap praise where praise is due and help his players and team in the long run.
