Ruben Tejada and Jordany Valdespin likely not back until September

Terry Collins said that — barring injury — Ruben Tejada and Jordany Valdespin likely won’t be back with the Mets until September.

According to Collins, the six-man rotation is more important right now.

Tejada is batting .309 with a .359 OBP, with seven doubles and seven RBI, in 23 games with Triple-A Las Vegas. Valdespin was recently named PCL Player of the Week, and is batting ,500 with two HR and 21 RBI in 11 games and 44 at bats since being demoted to Triple-A.

Omar Quintanilla is hitting just .218 AVG/.351 OBP/.269 SLG in July, playing the majority of innings at shortstop in Tejada’s absence.

The Mets will plan on sticking with a six-man rotation of Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler, Jenrry Mejia, Dillon Gee, Carlos Torres and Monday’s starter Jeremy Hefner for the time being.

Harvey and Wheeler will likely hit their team-imposed inning limits late in the season, so a six-man rotation allows them to pitch deeper into the year and gives them more rest between their starts.

Interesting note from MetsBlog contributor Chris Walendin: “Fun fact: If the Mets wait until September 9th instead of September 1st to recall Tejada, they buy back a year of team control.”
