Roster set, but not the Opening Day lineup

The Mets announced their 25-man roster Saturday, but Terry Collins refused the opportunity to announce his Opening Day lineup.

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

The question is: Who’s on first? Ike Davis or Lucas Duda? I’m betting Davis, at least for the first game of the season. It sounds like team is essentially punting on making a choice, hoping the two continue to battle, while platooning inside a platoon. In the event one gets hot, he’ll play more. And, if that doesn’t happen, and they both struggle, I have no idea what happens next…

Also, who’s in center field? Eric Young Jr. or Juan Lagares? I’m betting Lagares, despite Terry insisting EY propels run production. “King Lagares,” as his teammates often call him, was too good in the field last year and this spring to not have playing as much as possible. I mean, let’s ask the pitching staff who they want playing everyday, I imagine if we do that this debate will end rather quickly.

I like EY, he’s a good player, and I’m all for adding speed to the lineup, but not at the expense of what has the potential to be a game-changing defense in the outfield. In the event the team isn’t scoring runs, and not saving runs either, then I say revisit. But, until then, I hope it’s Lagares…

Tejada must feel great knowing that there's no other choice.  Way to make your players feel wanted... LGM!

How do u not bring in anyone to seriously compete for the shortstop position. No matter what tejeda did he was gettin the position bc there was no way in hell seratelli or quintanillla were taking the spot away from him. How do u not bring in some sort of veteren or make a trade for any shortstop or Take a chance on a shortstop that had promise in the past and it hasn't panned out yet. They resigned quintanillla knowing exactly what he was. Your telling me they couldn't have put a package together without giving up montero or syndegard to net a decent shortstop, net anyone who could of least competed seriously for this job. They didn't even give Flores a serious shot at the job. They didn't try anything creative or take a chance at all. They basically handed this guy the job from the start. No power no speed and sub par defense. If he doesn't at least bat 280 he's totally useless in my book

How about EYoung in LF, Lagares in CF and CGranderson in RF?

Tejada has done nothing to prove he currently deserves the starting SS spot. he was dreadful this spring, and failed in trying to prove his worth as anything more than a backup on this team.

in typical Mets fashion, first there was the botched, half-hearted Flores experiment, where the kid did everything asked of him there and even surpassed expectations, with nothing to show for it. then there were rumblings that EYJ would be asked to take some reps at short, only to get what, one measly inning there? if you're so intent on crowbarring him into this leadoff hitterless lineup, why not make a real effort to see what he has at short?

the mets acted like the season snuck up on them. we're literally hours away from opening game and there are still unanswered questions. pathetic. i just hope Tejada is on a short leash and Flores is called up sooner rather than later. if he can't cut it then so be it - at least it shows effort to improve at a lagging position.

I don't think Lagares or EYJ will be in center field. I believe Chris Young will be the CF, with EYJ in LF. That being said I would expect Lagares to be substituted in close games when there is a close lead.

Doesn't matter. It's a weak lineup regardless. One home run hitter, Granderson. Call me crazy, but I think a team needs more than one true home run threat in the lineup.

I don't get all the ey jr hype? he hits 240 was let go by the rockies lol... hes a nice piece of the bench to pr and swipe a bag late in a game THAT IS IT!..let juan play its such a simple decision

Germen and Brown are safe moves -- Campbell and some other pitcher would have been my choice ... Satin and Brown really didn't do much for me in ST.

It is hard to get revved up right now. We started spring thinking that a SS upgrade was possible, we thought the log jam at 1st would be decided by a competition, we wanted Niese to take the next step and that is also up in the air. We saw Black go from a possible 8th inning guy to a Vegas work in progress and we didn't see the offense from d'Arnaud or the velocity from Parnell...BUT

I thought Travis was starting to get comfortable, Parnell was just starting to air it out, Gee looked great, Wheeler will be fun to watch, Mejia got the #5 spot and More pitching is on the way (Thor/Montero) so I expect a similar record to last year with more pieces to be added during the season.

I gotta hope, I want to believe. I am a Met fan.

Collins never plays the hot player.  He always "rewards" his players after a great game by giving them a day off.

Alderson needs to step in here and prevent Collins from playing EY Jr.  He should be a fourth outfielder, and nothing more.

how does Q still have a roster spot?

@philoso  if EYJ is in the lineup, that's where he'll be playing, not CF. not sure what Matt is talking about in this blog.

I think they want Chris Youngs power and defense in left

Olerud42
Olerud42

@Marc Singleton  Eh. If you have enough guys that can hit 40 doubles, I'm not sure you need a ton of home run hitters.

Of course, we have neither so moot point.

1. Chris Young RF

2. Murph 2B

3. Wright 3B

4. Granderson LF

5. Davis/Duda 1B

6. Darnaud C

7.  Lagares CF

8. Tejada SS

I think this is the lineup we will see most often at the beginning of the season.  Lagares and Tejada are probably interchangeable at 7/8, hopefully Lagares shows he can be at least a #7 hitter if not better this year.  When EYJ plays he would lead off.

no matter how you slice it, this is a very weak line up!

I wouldn't make Murphy a below average first baseman for Young. EY is not the answer.

BringBackDaveTelghe
BringBackDaveTelghe

Not good.  Putting EYJ, one of the weakest hitters on the team into a defensive position he can't man  is a terrible idea.  Murphy profiles as a terrible 1b.  At least Duda or Murphy have some offensive upside between them.

Mike Dell Italia
Mike Dell Italia

I think if duda and Ike suck which is a very good possibility eventually u will see a lineup similar to that only thing I don't like ab that lineup is it's way to right handed

Olerud42

@mi  Dave Roberts did nothing but swipe a bag late in the game and the Sox came back from down 0-3 to win the ALCS. So there's that.

Mike Dell Italia

For the most part I see most mets fans wanting legares to play, the reason why there's a debate bc ey is are only logical lead off batter

Everyone on this team besides Wright and Murph hits .240

Germen sorta appeals, I guess, since he has shown signs.  But, Brown and Satin have been shown to be boring AAAA players from my vantage point.  Let's at least try someone knew who has had some fan appreciation.  I really would have liked to see some "Soup."  It is good food.

Jerry Colfer
Jerry Colfer

Agree. I love his speed, but he isn't a SS, Murph is a strong bat, Lagares, C Young and Grandy are a very.impressive defensive group.

Because he's inexpensive.

@nymess @philoso  Maybe it was a typo but EYJ is the worst defensive outfielder out of the 4 so when he does play he should be in LF.  Hopefully Lagares gets the start tomorrow though and gets ample playing time

Those are like the same exact lineups haha you think u know everything sorry man but u don't

@Pete Brilvitch  We should have signed Cano to a 3 year deal. We might have regretted the 3rd year, but we would have gotten two good ones for sure.

Mike Dell Italia

Bro if I had a front office position I would have a real lead off batter on this team and a real first basemen and a real shortstop

Joe Paulson
Joe Paulson

@Mike Dell Italia That seems true but it's a pretty bad reason to play him over Lagares.  If he leads off, it also just underlines that they need another bat to lead off, now with the added annoyance (and deficit) of not have Lagares playing CF.  Net, it's pretty obvious it's better to deal with someone not really ideal to lead off batting first on balance than not playing Lagares.  The guy even hit decently in ST, which only helps his case, besides repeatedly making "wow" plays in the field while the SNY announcers politely tried not to say "damn it's obvious the guy should start."

@Jimmy P. but those guys granderson, young, ike have the potential to hit 20 hrs

@Ken Thall: here is the flaw in your stupid logic Ken: what if you LOVE that thing, and grew up with that thing, not so easy to just not watch.  That is how the Mets are for many of us.  It painful to watch a team you love that has been mismanaged so deeply.

Carlos Rivera

Lol I want the best for our team. My first game was 1967. That's 46 years

Have never been this frustrated. Hope this all pans out

@Ken Thall @Carlos Rivera

Thanks for the advice Ken. I won't. I've been a Met fan from the beginning, when I was 7 years old in 1962.I have never felt so used and abused as  I do now. At least those late 70 teams, as pathetic as they were, weren't promising anything. Everything this organization has said has been a lie since Madoff. If they would have just been honest and said we're broke I cold have respected them more. But from the beginning they said the revenue loss has nothing to do with the baseball side of things. Yeah, right. And 2014 was going to be the year for " financial flexibility". That's why, even with the increased MLB revenue, their payroll is less than last year. All lies and I'm done listening to it. So your right, Ken, I won't be watching. Go Red Sox ( I was born in Massachusetts. I moved here when I was 7.)

Mike Dell Italia

I'm sayin legares bc I'm assuming he starts over ey and with no other logical leadoff batter in the lineup I would go w legares bc of his speed obv ey is the most logical leadoff batter so don't even go there bro. If ey is not in the startin lineup we do not have a leadoff batter obv I'm not stupid.

Mike Dell Italia
Mike Dell Italia

I agree I want legares to play everyday I would just have legares leadoff
