Ricciardi: Front office happy to start with Ruben Tejada at shortstop

On Thursday night, Mets special assistant JP Ricciardi told Rob Bradford and John McDonald of WEEI Radio in Boston the team is happy to go into camp with Ruben Tejada as their projected starting shortstop.

“A lot of young players who get to play at the big league level early in their career, a lot of them don’€™t realize how hard it is to play every day,” Ricciardi explained about Tejada. “They get to the big leagues, some things happen for them and they forget how tough it is to stay there. … I think next year he’€™s going to be a better player than he was this previous year.”

Ricciardi acknowledged the shortstop market has not evolved the way they envisioned, which is partly why the Mets have become open to the possibility of Tejada starting the year as their shortstop.

“Sometimes there’€™s just supply and demand and I think right now there’€™s just not a lot of demand for shortstops,”€ Ricciardi said. “I think in this case there’€™s a lot of shortstops that are already in place.”

Early on, the front office made finding a new shortstop a top priority. Unfortunately, there hasn’t seemed to be as many realistic targets as the Mets envisioned there would be, the price in free agency skyrocketed early, leaving the Mets in a difficult position.

They’re still looking and trying to find a way to upgrade. It’s possible they could eventually sign free agent SS Stephen Drew, as his market is basically limited to both New York teams and the Red Sox at the moment. Of the three, the Mets might offer the highest probability he would start over the length of any contract. If he does get a shorter-term deal, joining the Mets could provide the greatest ability to build more value for when he re-enters free agency in a year or two.

Honestly, if things go right, Murphy is traded for a stronger player somewhere, Tejada and Young are competing at 2B and Drew is our SS.

Crazy idea: Convert Daniel Murphy to SS and play Eric Young Jr at 2B.  Murph did a great job learning 2B.  SS is harder, but it's better than having a guy who's all-field, no hit, no run.

There is no doubt that Drew hits more HR's and drives in more runs than Tejada, lifetime stats prove that.  My question is why is everyone so excited in a aging SS who has never hit more that 21 HR's in a season and has only hit 15 or more twice?  His RBI totals are around 60-65 a year, that is good not great.  He also gets hurt often and is a league average SS at a premium position.  He just wants too much money for the production he offers.

TRANSLATION: The Mets don't want to meet Drew's asking price, so they now support Tejada knowing that he will be their option come Spring....which is a complete 180 from their stance a month or two ago. Riccardi's foot-in-mouth moment.

It sounds like the donuts are out of his life. As long as Duda doesn't force him to drink, we will be all set.

This was nothing but a tactical move by the Mets to get Drew for cheaper or a shorter amount of time. Come on, people.

And they're overjoyed to have Ike Davis on first.

J D Drew is not a star SS, but what he does do is upgrade a weak position and allow us to keep all our Minor League bullets for later trade for major players on a rental basis. Later you's to say that Drew himself is not part of a trade. That's why I don't think the third year is a big deal.

Is there any truth to the rumor that the Mets are interested in acquiring reclamation project Andrew Bynum who was just placed on the trading block by the Cleveland Cavaliers???

Last year the Yankee payroll counting luxury tax was almost triple our 87 million. The Mets are not signing JD Drew because they are determined to lower the payroll AGAIN for the sixth straight year to below 85 million!!!

They will have a bottom 6 payroll in all of MLB this year!!!

How is this working now?  SNY posts a link to this article on Facebook and when people respond to it the comment shows up here?  I'm looking at the SNY Facebook page and that's where these Facebook comments seem to be coming from.

So basically replying to anyone with a "from Facebook" in their name is pointless because they aren't even coming to this site?

If they are happy with Tejada at SS and Lucas the lumbering ox at 1B they should be overjoyed at the empty morgue they call home

What message does that send to the clubhouse that a guy like Tejada can phone it in for a whole season, and easily start the next season? Please give the coaches, fans and players a fresh start with Owings, Miller, or Drew. Whatever money or prospects the front office spends to get this done, you will be repaid when reassured fans ACTUALLY BUY TICKETS. I don't know about you, but with Ike at first, and Tejada at SS, I am not buying tickets.

Sandy December 2nd--Our number one priority at these Winter Meetings is to get a SS.

JPR December 27--We are HAPPY with Tejeda at SS- Do these guys ever stop LYING.

Gavin C is probably 3 years away from a cup of coffee....I would RATHER sign Drew for 3 years than 1 or 2.  I live in Boston and have seen him play a ton.  He is probably the best fielding shortstop, but definitely top 3...also his offensive stats for a SS are VERY good.  His power numbers won't go down too because he's a lefty and Fenway is a nightmare for lefties not named Ortiz and we have that right field porch....sign him for 3 years and don't haggle over a couple million a year.  This is New York...not some small market...come on already...

This is so pathetic that the inept ownership has manifested their mediocre mind set down to the fan base where now the fans accept AA players as major league talent.Tejada,Tovar & Omar Q (released) put together are horrific..(2013) Tejada 0/10/.202,Tovar 0/2/.200 & the mighty Omar Q 2/21/.222 so add all that up. 2 hrs/31 rbi/.208 is the median. There are legitimately (10) SS who can give u 2/31 in a month.. The Wilpons are in financial trouble, forget Madoff for now, they hv numerous unpaid loans reported on the M.Kay show by a beat writer so the $ spending days r long gone..Alderson is no guru by any means.5 yrs of losing & ineptitude,3 yrs of Alderson's spin doctoring,"my slow flow's remarkable" speech pattern, unpreparedness waiting 3 yrs for this FA class only to be told "Gee fellas the market is robust"..WTH? Nobody else made that ridiculous remark. That's why it's called free agency Sandy. The highest bidder gets the prize, hello earth to front office, what does this guy do all day,all year besides not care abt the fan base? And all of this nonsense is accepted by the fan base as they continue to spew superfluous banter and never ever mention winning, playoffs, championships, never. They breed losing..Success breeds success.Bring in winning major league talent with a winning manager,no dis to TC but this guy s/b a minor league director, its 2014 new day ppl..Boston,St Louis what do they hv in common?Young front office, young managers, fresh minds, new ideas.Until the Wilponzies sell, expect 85-90 losses per yr..Fan since 73'

This is fine with me. We're not going to make the playoffs next year. Let's see if Tejada bounces back, like Ron Darling said on MLB network, this kid Tejada had one bad season after showing some real talent the year before and people wanna send him packing? Whatta joke I know we're a knowledgable fan base but a lot of people think of this as fantasy baseball when it's not. It's people, there are personalities and their development. Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee were sent to the minors for their ineffectiveness, look who they are today. It goes for any player, they could fail or succeed, we don't know but at least Ruben has shown the ability to succeed before.

Dude every time you post the same thing about signing JD Drew you look like more and more of a fool. It's hard to take you seriously if you don't even know the name of the guy you keep complaining about.

@maxster I hope we don't sign JD Drew I think he has been retired for a while. However, a lot of Mets fans think his underachieving little brother Stephen Drew will somehow makes us instant contenders.

I haven't bought a ticket to Citi Field in two years. I like the Granderson and Colon signings a lot. If they get a real SS, I will go to at least 3 games.

The Orioles have refused to give up their 3rd best prospect for Ike. A LH pitcher. His name escapes me right now.

It is only stupid if Richardi really meant what he said. If he was just saying it to improve our bargaining position on Drew, then it wasn't stupid at all.

@omarminaya The Wilpons should have been forced to sell the team just like McCourt was forced to sell the LAD. The fact that MLB has bailed them out financially and with a GM is ridiculous to me. I've been trying to hold judgment on Sandy, but his actions, or lack there of, prove to me that he and his front office mates are flat out lying to everyone. I don't understand why they didn't just fess up to being broke... they don't need to spend for the sake of spending, but going from - we're unimpressed with Tejada and looking to upgrade at SS to - we're happy with Tejada at SS makes no sense and really feels like a lie.

@Steven Matregrano your team sucks and your attitude is part of the reason. change occurs how? not with complacency. we rather be all excited about the season than wondering why our SS sux and we have no 1b and our OF is mediocre with a 4th OF getting the starting nod.

@Tarheel11 @maxster it would be worse if he gets paid over 10 mil for 3 years and is not a major improvement.  Tejada will be fine, lets worry about first base.
