Report: Chris Young release back on the table

The Mets are once again considering releasing outfielder Chris Young and promoting Triple-A outfielder Matt den Dekker (Rubin, Aug. 8).

The Mets had thought about waiting until when rosters expand on Sept. 1 to promote den Dekker, who is hitting a Pacific Coast League best .334.  They now may bring him up earlier and replace the struggling Young. The plan is for den Dekker to play left field full-time when if/when he returns.

Young is on a one-year deal and is owed $2 million on his one-year $7.25 million contract. He is hitting .206 with a .253 on base average and a .346 slugging percentage.

Why is facebook showing this as the top news item on Sunday days after the release happened?

They'd be at .500 at least, had they another outfielder instead of him.

The Mets are always behind...Flores should have been starting at short a while ago. Chris young should have been cut awhile ago.

Please... I'm tired of watching Cy everynight.... dude bust his ass but he is never going to be the player he was a few years ago.... time to bring up Den Decker

It makes too much sense.  I'll believe it when I see it.

How is this even a debate.  A child in Kindergarten would have enough sense to dump this bum.

They will never release him. Chances are he will be up soon at some point and get a double and play for a week straight . I don't trust Sandy or Collins when they claim they want to start younger players

Everything the Mets do is a joke.. Everyone knows it but them

I actually don't get too caught up in blasting Sandy for mistakes, every GM makes them, but this CY thing has really gone too far and Sandy is proving a victim of his own vanity. This has gone on too long and only continues to exist because Sandy refuses to act in the best interest of the club. Don't understand it, but he really does risk longer term credibility if he doesn't do the right thing. Look at what Billy Beane swallowed on Jimmy Johnson? This almost feels like a spiteful move on Sandy's part towards disgruntled fans who constantly criticize him. He is really looking more childish than anything else

just got the guy already....let flores play SS ever single game already.. grandy murph wright duda TDA kirk/MDD flores should be the regular lineup...

Do it already, no excuse to keep him. They gave him plenty of time to show he could hit. He failed, time to move on.

Every time he gets a hit or walks he extends his major league career by 2 weeks

It's going to cost the Mets $2 million either way - whether they keep Chris Young or release him.

It would cost the Mets about $160,000 to pay den Dekker the rest of the season if he's called up.

So we're talking $2 million in total cost and you get Chris Young the rest of the season

OR

$2,160,000 in total cost and you get den Dekker and the possibility of helping him grow as a MLB player and maybe be a part of the Mets future.

It would only cost the Mets another $160,000!!!  Seems such an obvious no-brainer to me

What can you do,no one likes to lose money,do you? I always crack up when I hear fans saying "spend this much" "cut "Jason Bay or Chris Young, like losing millions is peanuts lol. Get real people,of course they're going to wait till the bitter end and only as a last resort take any financial loss.

Doing things in a careful, considered way is important, but we just seem to be moving too slow - like waiting till the train has left the station.

This guy must have blackmail pics of Alderson and the Wilponzis or something! Release him already and let DenDekker or Capt. Kirk play already!

Why do obvious moves that other teams simply make, always seem to be these drawn out ordeals for the Mets?  This organization is run by morons, cowards and the socially disaffected.

that stiff young will be gone soon enough...but what about that other 20 MILLION DOLLAR A YEAR STIFF....DAVID WRIGHT???...he is pathetic...an automatic out  batting 3rd in the lineup!!....260 and 8 home runs???.. IF WRIGHT WAS EARNING 1/2 OF THE MONEY THEY WASTE ON HIM...THE METS WOULD HAVE AT LEAST 7-8 MORE WINS....he is the "FACE OF THE FRANCHISE".????....absolutely...the face of a losing franchise....

Mike Herrington

The only reason to not bring up Matt is the AAA playoffs. Mets organization has said minor league playoff experience is important to development to ML.

Other than that, see no reason to keep Young at all. Wonder if we could see Brown just to dump Young.

If they don't cut him, they should play him ever day.  It's a glaring example of how Sandy & Co have failed to put a competitive major league team on the field.

Should have been done a long time ago. Gonna pay his salary anyway might as well get production for the position from a young guy who may or may not excell

Exactly. Lets wait and see how the next few weeks pan out.  Young might still, "get it going".

@joe21  So right.. Especially his last interview with Gary and company... and Keith's interaction with him regarding Jake regarding shutting him down... I know this sounds unrelated but I am so annoyed by the pampering these guys get today... If I am correct, Seaver  had 200 complete games in his career... and 60 plus shutouts. I think he would have told his gm and coaches what to do if rhey told him you cant pitch anymore in year because of innings... To my knowledge he never had an arm injury that shut him down.... I think he had leg issues later on in his career... If these guys are that breakable now they shouldn't be paying them the kinds of money they are... Besides they all throw 95 plus today..so easily replaceable... As Darling says... all teams in the leagues have guys that throw hard...we just don't hear about them as much.

George Brezny
George Brezny

So, quick question.... I agree except for Flores... Help me understand what people see in Flores as the SS of the future that I am not seeing... With due respect, I haven't seen him hit for average at the major league with more power than Tejada (who I deem as an above average off the bench at best), and he really has been given a chance the past two years to take it.. Especially after the year Tejada had last year and was in the dog house all year.. If I am accurate, he was originally an SS they said outgrew the position...

Finally, in the future... is your position that he should be the Mets next SS?  On the team as a replacement? Second base.. You didn't mention Murphy? Amazes me Mets might let him go.. I guess for the right price but then who is his replacement?  Respect your position but not sure I agree with the Flores endorsement.

George Brezny
George Brezny

@Rimo Chaloney  Agreed..... Bring up Dek  so he has more than a four week show case going in to next year. Or, it will be the same ole same ole next year... Time to make decisions on him and Kirk... In my opinion, I can see both of them making the team next year... off the bench or platooning... to rest Lageres...and the right hand hitting left fielder with power we have to pick up in the offseason.. Or, right fielder... since I think Grandy is more suited for LF. Eric Campbell hopefully will be more than a one year wonder... and provides pop/clutching hitting off the bench..and has proven he can play a number of position ...and bats from the right side.. So, right now the two big needs ..upgrading ss and one outfield position.. Like you said... no brainer to bring the guy up now... Time to cut bait on CY... Its over.. I actually like him but it just hasn't worked out.. and was a long shot anyway which we all knew they paid too much early last offseason.. Another guy I like but his days may be over is EY... Bring up Matt Reynolds and release EY right now for same reason as Dek...

It's called a sunk cost. The replacement player would only make the league minimum, so... WTF? This is the cost of doing business In the Major Leagues... If you expect me to pay top dollar for a ticket, parking, food, etc., then you had better not be putting anything less than the best product you can on the field.

@Macacawitz I realize that we Mets fans can be a little over the top sometimes but  most of us are pretty baseball savvy.  It seems the  Mets front office is determined NOT to do what most fans suggest or wait til the very end and imply it was their idea.  If the fans were running this team I believe we'd, at the very leas,t be over .500 and in contention for a playoff spot.

joe21
joe21

This actually may be important because the Mets are trying to get out of Vegas and don't want to give potential suitors any concerns about clearing out a AAA team without regard for their owners. They treated Buffalo like poop and ended up in Vegas. They need to get out of there (hopefully Roxhester) and need to put good face on to their owners

@steve333  It's not done yet... they are only "discussing" it.  Unreal.

You can't say flores hasn't hit in the majors when he hits hot in AAA and gets benched for a week straight and plays a game and benched.

Macacawitz
Macacawitz

@Robert Hess @Macacawitz This isn't rocket science or an over reaction to a bad game or week.  This guy has been awful from day 1 and rightly deserves to be shown the door in favor of a younger player deserving a chance.  He's at the end of a one year deal, what's so hard to grasp?

joe21
joe21

Let us not forget that Sandy was not in favor of reupping DW because of falloff in 2nd Gen contracts. Reyes contract is going to be awful for the next three years. Can you imagine that Jose has 4 triples in his last 900 ABs in Toronto? His falloff has been pretty dramatic and if the Mets had resigned both, you would be looking at the same roster for the next three years with no money to improve team

George Brezny
George Brezny

@Macacawitz @Robert Hess  Always a great voice of reason:)... May be they can come up with some obscure rib injury.. Put him on the 60 day disabled list - they might get some insurance money back to pay for the 2 million. I actually like CY but I think his days may be numbered.. Feel like he has tried but the skills are gone. You would think he would have had a better year considering it was only for one year (thank god) Probably proves he's done.  So, Sandy is one up and one down if you count Marlon B. with two so so signings (Abreau and Colon) and one incomplete (Grandy)... Thoughts?

John G Oleon
John G Oleon

@joe21 wright will be fine, not great. Guys on here speak out of both sides of their mouth. Who wouldn't have signed david to that contract? So he moves down to 5 or 6 eventually that is why you need to keep young players coming. Give Sandy the offseason at least folks

rock44
rock44

@steve333 @rock44 Agree 100%.   Sandy & Co only want "yes" men who will cooperate in lying to the fan base.  Wally won't comply, so he will never be here.
