Red Sox reportedly sign Rusney Castillo to $72M deal

The Red Sox have reportedly signed free-agent Cuban OF Rusney Castillo to a six-year, $72 million deal >> Read more at MLB Trade Rumors.

The Mets were among several teams that attended Castillo’s workout in Miami last month. However, unlike the Red Sox, Phillies and others, they did not have Castillo in for a private workout (Cerrone, Aug. 14).

“There might be some scouting differences of opinion, and kind of where we are and what we’re going to do in the immediate future, so there are lots of issues involved,” Sandy Alderson recently said (NY Post, Aug. 22), in regards to why the Mets have not aggressively pursued Castillo, who is also capable of playing middle infield.

I want Yosmani Tomas, looks identical to Cespedes who is no scrub. Tomas has a solid frame with plus power the mets would be crazy not to go after this guy.

That deal is JUST STUPID!!! Ohhh, are Beantown fans gonna be nasty to deal with in about four years...

All of these crazy years they're throwing at people is just plain nuts. Colo's Tulo deal is another example. I have my fingers crossed about David's Met deal -- although that's as much for being the Face of the Franchise, & a community figure etc., etc., & an admission that he's all we got, as much as it is for what they expect from him over the next seven years.

Too many of these deals are great for the first few years, then the guy gets hurt or just breaks down.

These deals made some twisted sense during the Steroid Era, when the drugs kept guys pickled, juiced up & wired for sound, so they didn't break down until they were 45 or so. Recovery times were cut to next to nothing. Yeah, GMs could get value back then.

But now that players are back playing au naturale, we're back to Nature having its way -- 30 is IT; the TOP. PEAK. Then, the decline. Old Baseball Age is 35. At 36, 37, you're back on the ranch or figuring out how to keep what money you made in BB. A few guys are hanging on at that point to get a few last mega checks.

Two years, three years, OK. BUT SEVEN YEARS -- to a guy who's never played U.S. ball?? Just 'cause the Dodgers & A's got lucky?? Bosox fans are gonna tear Fenway apart if he falls apart at ANY point before that contract is up.

Thank you for keeping your head, Sandy, while all about you are losing theirs…

Mets are a 3rd world organization they don't have any money to spend. period I don't know why we the FAN don't understand that yet. Were going to try to scrap by with young pitching and 2nd rate hitters

@JetsMets71 Honest question  .Where would the Mets be if say Wright did what he was suppose to do Hit  290-300.90 R.B.I and Granderson did what He was suppose to do 270-275 20-30 Hrs 80-100 R.B.I.For a rookie the Catcher has done his part, Duda has done more then people thought and Murphy done what was expected of him. Lagares best defensive Center fielder in Baseball. The pitching has improved and the relief Pitching has been solid after the switches.Lets put the blame where it should be.David Wright and Granderson have failed this year miserably.

At least teams like the Dodgers and BoSox take chances. Our big gambles are CYoung and Jose Valverde.

Sandy Sucks.

I hope the RedSox don't get bitten in the butt on signing Castillo. Personally, I think they are nuts. 6 yrs/ $72 Mil????? No Way!

You can have 5 aces in your staff, but it means nothing when you can't score. Watch the A's get eliminated first round of the playoffs.

@rico Mets have a lot of young talent on the way, this Year as we all knew from the start was a bust .Get some guys that put the ball in play and can steal some bases  and hope and pray David Wright figures it out in the off season. Hopefully He comes back better next year, because he is going nowhere. The problem with the Mets there is to many strike out victims in their lineup.

Nicholas Vargas

That's a lot of money and years, they have to sign Tomas now.

Watched the Dodger game on T.V. last night Tuner batting around 310 hits the game winning Hr.Every time this kid was put in the lineup for the Mets he produced.  They bad mouthed on the way out the door.He cost about 2 million a year in todays Game that is peanuts. Then they go ahead and sign the two headed strike out monsters Young and Granderson.I have no faith in Mets free agency signings.Foster,Bay ,Granderson,Young,Bonnila Castillo Matsui Etc.Etc.Stick with the farm and smart trades.

Boras was right.  Mets are still shopping in the "fruits and nuts" section.

Why don't u guys have a rally with picket signs and everything protesting what is going on with this team...have one in the city in front of MLB offices and have one in front of citifield. The knicks fans did it and they are not as bad as the mets are.

The Red Sox acquired Yoenis Cespedes and Oakland's selection -- the second in the round -- in the Competitive Balance compensation B round of next year's draft in exchange for Jon Lester and Jonny Gomes and cash from the Red Sox.

@metjetnet A 7 year deal is a bit crazy, but the difference is that the Red Sox can afford for this to be a mistake, while the Mets and the Wilpennies have one chance at a deal like this and it better turn into Puig.

JetsMets71
JetsMets71

@truth77  and I really don't have high hopes for this off season. Even if the mets had unlimited resources the FA picture is not looking great.  Plus almost every team is looking for offense. Of course as the mets have built up a surplus of very good pitching, the whole league is looking for hitting.

@michael I don't know why Jon Niese doesn't understand why more fans are not coming to games.

truth, to answer your question, they would be probably 5 game (at least) better.  If they had not mismanaged the pen at the beginning of the year they would have a better record as well.

JetsMets71
JetsMets71

@truth77 @JetsMets71 That is the problem with the mets as an organization.  They build a team based on a "best case scenario" premise.  Best case scenario wright has a year pre citi field, granderson, coming off two hand injuries has a prime yankee year, colon wins 20 games.  The only thing I blame Wright for is signing with the Mets.  They built a ballpark that takes away their best hitter!  Can't make this stuff up.

@xplr It is easier to take a gamble like this when your owner will give you another $72m if this one doesn't pan out.  Sandy can make a 3m dollar gamble and a 7m dollar gamble, not a 72m dollar gamble, that has to be a guarantee.

grillruben
grillruben

@MetsFan1962

What's the worst case scenario? He sucks, they eat the money then just go out and get another player.  That's what winning teams do. They wouldn't ride him out for 7 years and let him stink. If he's bad they'll just chalk it up to a bad investment and move on.

@truth77 I was waiting for this posting today. I saw that too last night.

The Knicks have an incompetent owner. He'd spend as much $ as possible to improve the team. I think he hired Phil right before that rally. Two different situations. The Wilpons don't have the money it takes to own a team in NY. They aren't breaking any laws, and clearly would rather own a bad team that is unable to compete, than sell it, make a fortune and let some other group with the $ necessary step in.

lindro88
lindro88

Who could like what's going on? People go because it's a night out. I used to go to 30 games a season. Now I'll go twice. They are going to finish near the bottom in attendance. Doesn't seem to bother Fred

Jay Cross
Jay Cross

@Anthony Gaetano DeCesare No. I get the logic of what you're saying, but going to Mets games is something I do for personal enjoyment first, not activist statement-making against the Wilpons. As much as I despise their tyrannical ownership and selfish destruction of the team, I refuse to not enjoy Mets games on top of it.

@JetsMets71 @truth77 David just had 2 of his best years the last two years, as for building a team based on best case scenarios, that is what happens when you don't have a big budget, the depth takes a hit

@JetsMets71 @truth77  Before this season, Wright was an all-star while playing in CitiField 4 out of 5 years.  His career high for HRs is 33.  At Citi it is 29.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with the ballpark since they moved the fences in.

You can make this stuff up (you just did).

@rico @archer41 Maybe when he was talking about his other client, Harvey, and why he shouldnt even think about resigning here...ever.

"you bicker with them at every turn"    "they put no one around you"      "ever hear of wins, want to get some"      "they shop in the fruits and nuts section"    "wright took a paycut for them and they pocketed that money"    "they tried to force you to go to Florida even though they were in violation of the CBA"

rico

@lindro88 He's the real irony.  The Knicks and the Mets should switch owners.  Dolan would spend his way to a ring but cannot in the NBA. In the NBA you have to work within a cap which Dolan has botched since his daddy gave him the team.

The Wilpons love baseball but don't have Dolan-money to free-spend in a sport that allows it.

Here's a prediction.  James Dolan will one day own the Yankees or the Mets.

@lindro88 A nice night out is exactly right. I love getting a basket of sweet potato fries with buffalo sauce and standing on the Pepsi Porch with a nice breeze swirling around me while I root for our younger players.

Is it sad that's what going to a Mets game has been reduced to the last few years? Absolutely! Yet I refuse to cut myself off from baseball just to make a statement the idiot owners are never going to hear.

lindro88

If they don't add a SS and at least one solid hitting corner outfielder, it will make it very hard to find a reason to get excited about this team. They literally are two quality players away from putting a competitive team on the field. Obviously assuming our top pitchers stay healthy

rico
rico

@lindro88 you don't think they know that?  you don't think every person here  knows that?

my dead great grandparents could tell you the mets need 2 quality bats and they will be players in the NL east.  Of course Sandy and his mates and bosses and every living particle in the universe has that information.

Of course they will address it in the offseason. They tried to address it last off season but it was not as pressing due to the harvey injury.  This off season it's imperative.  Yet it's likely to have to be done by trades

and everybody is after the 3 guys who can hit in MLB

JetsMets71
JetsMets71

@rico So they didn't really improve the club last off season b/c Harvey was hurt?  what happens if Harvey comes back and is not the same pitcher?  Do they take another pass on the off season??  What happens if DeGrom and Wheeler get hurt?  Do they take a pass then too?

Its a joke that this "organization" cannot field a decent (see I didn't even say good) MLB lineup.  Its been 6 years of this crap fest.  2014 was the year they were going to makes moves and start winning.

Obviously the Ponzi's are BROKE.
