Recap: Pirates 5, Mets 3

The Mets watched a 2-0 lead vanish in the eight inning, falling to the Pirates, 5-3, at Citi Field >> Read a full recap and boxscore at SNY.TV.

Jacob deGrom tossed 6.2 innings of scoreless baseball. He left with a 2-0 lead and a chance at his first win. Then the bullpen took over…

Scott Rice gave up a solo homer in the eighth inning, after which Jose Valverde gave up a double to Starling Marte and single to Jose Tabata to tie the score. Valverde was then rocked in the ninth inning and gave up a two-run single by Gabby Sanchez. In total, Valverde gave up four runs, four hits and a walk in 0.2 innings for the loss.

The Mets offense wasn’t much better. They scored two runs in the fifth and that’s it. Daniel Murphy had two hits, as did Lucas Duda. DeGrom also had two hits.

The Mets host the Pirates on Tuesday. Jon Niese (3-3, 2.70 ERA) goes for the Mets against Edison Volquez (2-4, 4.37 ERA) at 7:10 p.m. at Citi Field.

"They scored two runs in the fifth and that's it."

Guess Duda's homerun didn't count. Sucks for him. It's already tough enough to hit one out of Citi field, but now when you do it you get no credit for it.

I NOTICED LUCAS DUDA IS NOT WAITING TO TAKE PITCHES LIKE BEFORE IF IT'S OVER THE PLATE Thats a good thing, can't wait to see  if he starts to hit better and imptoves hid clutch hitting

The Mets hitting remains anemic (let's see what a new hitting coach can do)...the bullpen stinks (bye bye Valverde)...and today the fielding quality could not matchLittle League World Series. What a mess.

We cant fire all the lousy players. Half of this roster is minor league caliber players . We as fans should punish our penny pinching owners by not going to any games. The Wilpons hate the fans. Plain and simple. As for Terry Collins... Fire his drunk ass. His bullpen mismanagement has cost the team no less than five wins. Maybe it will light a fire under the butts of this gutless team.

Would have liked to have seen Familia pitch more then 1 batter with Mejia and Dice K unavailable.

When deGrom pitches, he should definitely not bat ninth...  perhaps we found our lead-off hitter...

That's probably because he pitched in both ends of the doubleheader yesterday

@samc  Jacob DeGrom - starting pitcher newly promoted (3rd start) from Vegas. Another good homegrown pitcher. He used to be a SS - wonder if he'd switch back??

You know what's funny and NO ONE brings this up..Sandy Alderson makes fun of fans when they bring up free agents/trades and he says well fans don't know what they are talking about...that Sandy gets paid to do his job and they make the "prudent decisions". So why can't we jump on Sandy for making these horrible decisions??? He is PAID to make these decisions and trained to make these decisions  unlike us "untrained" fans
