Recap: Mets 8 – Rangers 4

Results: The Mets scored five runs in the first inning as they went on to beat the Rangers on Sunday afternoon at Citi Field.

Need to know: Anthony Recker had three hits and three RBIs for the Mets and his three-run homer in the first gave the Mets a 5-0 lead off of Nick Tepesch.  That was the help Zack Wheeler needed as the Mets’ pitcher tossed 6.1 innings giving up only one run and six hits for his fourth win. Kirk Nieuwenhuis also homered for the Mets.

Game ball: Anthony Recker had three hits and homered as the Mets catching position has become a plus in the batting lineup with Travis d’Arnaud also dangerous as a hitter at catcher.

What’s next: The Mets return to NL play on Monday when they host the Braves at Citi Field. Daisuke Matsuzaka gets the start for the Mets while Mike Minor goes for the Braves.

Lost in the shuffle of yesterday's glorious victory against a team that may very well be worse than us is the fact that the average Met fan cannot even feel comfortable with a 6-run lead in the 8th inning. Sure, Germen is only here for mop-up and blowout duty but the guy is AWFUL. A veritable gopher-ball waiting to happen. Why is he even with the club? I don't care how much Keith 'likes his stuff.' Texas was one pitch away from bringing the tying run to the plate. TC had to burn Familia and Mejia. Far too close for comfort. Someone should tell Terry than there is such a thing as a two-way reliever.

Wilmer 2-4 with another HR and 3 RBI. What is that, HR in 5 games in a row? Flores now batting .327. Shame on you, Sandy and Terry, for keeping him out of the ML line up.

A great game for Syndergaard 7ip 6 hits 1er 0 bb 8k.

Also another good game for Flores 5 straight games with homer, a total of 6 hrs in the last 5 games. 11 hrs 45 rbi in 41 games.

Good game. Nieuwenhuis and Cambell need to play over Cy.

Recker is not a starter but he is a good bench player and backup catcher.  Whenever he plays sparingly he always seems to make the most of it.  Solid win by the Mets.  I was glad to see them stay somewhat aggressive and tack on a few runs that ended up being key to them winning this game.  I realize the Rangers never scored more than the Mets did in the first but if the game had been 5-4 who knows if one of the relievers let the pressure get to him.

Have to think CY will be getting his papers by the ASB -- don't see how they keep him if Soup and Kirk remain useful.  Other than that,  I'm not sure I see a lot of roster shakeup unless someone throws them a blockbuster deal that works (and I don't see that happening either).

Can people stop ranting about boycotting the Mets?  Was at Citi Field and had an enjoyable day with my family.  If you want to boycott go ahead, but some people still enjoy the stadium and the team and don't need to be told what to do with their spare time.  It is freaking annoying.

we need to replace our current shortstop. The only way he performance is when somebody is breathing down his neck to take his job away. If he is given the job, he will lapse back into his 230 Waze. Before I make it to trade for a shortstop, I'd like to give Matt Reynolds a couple few weeks playing consistently to see what he can do at the major league level. 355 at AA and 378 after 57 at bats In aaa.

Cut Abreu and CY.

All we are saying is give Kirk a chance!!!

Kirk in right and Grandy in left.

Against lefties play Campbell in left and Grandy in right.

So, any chance that SA contacts the Cubs about their surplus of shortstops?

Well played gentleman! Now let's see much more of Kirk in left and d'Arnaud batting higher in the order. Kirk/Soup platoon in left? EY/Abreu strictly off the bench, spot starts to get guys rest.

Maybe cut CY and bring up the red hot Flores? CY doesn't really help this team in any way, admit the mistake. Team before pride.

I enjoyed what I saw today, it was entertaining baseball. Hope they keep it up.

Recker had only one hit - not three...

Happy to still give him the game ball!

Alderson's moves in the off season were all we need to know about the future under his leadership.  He paid top dollar for non-performing player. Just look at the roster and the salaries he paid.  He is even failing by his own standards of measurement.

Lets dump the Youngs, trade Duda and Tejada for anything that breathes and play Kirk in left everyday.  Trade for a young SS who hits a couple of HR's and hits a few 275 feet.  Play Cambell at 1st and move on.  So tired of these 4 players.  Could trade all 4 and not get anything over an average single A player.

@Doubleday It's clear by now that the guy has to actually PLAY to remain effective. But what are the options? A clever GM would find a trading partner. Anybody else have a morbid fear that Sandy will sign Alphonso Soriano?

@Kevin VanTassell Flores will never flourish in NY because TC has an aversion to him.  When given a chance to play every day in LV, he does a solid job offensively . The day Backman takes over in NY is the day Flores career will begin in earnest.  And, BTW, can we find a AAA club a bit closer to NY than LV?  The way the FO runs this shuttle, no wonder players always have a jet-lagged look on their face.

@Kevin VanTassell there are only 3 possibilities re Flores:

1) He was sent down to play 1B, 2B, SS, and 3B and scouts for interested trading partners were told to watch him there or:

2) He was sent to LV and Backman was told to move him around the INF because he will be brought up again after the ASB to play every day, or

3) both.

@Kevin VanTassell Doesn't matter about Flores since the Mets have decided that he will never get a chance to play consistently.  He must have pissed someone off...

If I am paying TOP DOLLAR to see a MAJOR LEAGUE TEAM, thats what I want to see! If YOU choose to waste money because you have it to waste, GOOD FOR YOU. Im disabled and choose to let the owners know they are CHEAP! I have been a fan for 45 yrs and paid my dues. This is still America, where freedom of speach is covered by the First Amendment.

@hubie_wc  . .  The Cubs do not suffer from low attendance and they consistently have losing seasons. Diehard fans commit to their teams whether they are contending or not.

@mustang66  Tejada really hasn't been doing that badly of late.  His defense has been pretty solid, and he's even up to .240 now.  I'm not a big fan of his, but he gets way too much flak on this site.

Our shortstop got on three times today, drove in a run and made at least four good plays. He has not been the problem lately.

hubie_wc

@mustang66 All reports on Reynolds is he needs more time to improve at SS.  They are not even sure if he is a ML SS.  So you don't experiment at the big league level.  He needs the full year at AAA.  Tejada is not the long term answer but he has played ok.  Certainly not the reason they are 10 games under.

Kirk deserves a chance but Campbell is already proven. After what he did over seven games and the rest of his that bad how in the world is he said two games in a row

@Mark Phelan  . .  Sandy has no standard of measurement ... just watch the games and the cast of career minor league players. Bench quality at best.

Bob Primosch

@Art Dockerty The team can't hit and you want to trade Duda?  Look at his numbers compared to the rest of the roster.  CY is toast but EY could be a useful utility player.  Tejada has probably saved his job for the time being -- not sure how serious they are about Flores anymore.  Pitching-wise, the most SA might give up for a decent shortstop is Montero and maybe Ynoa and/or Flores and that still might not do it.

tjsands
tjsands

@Art Dockerty - Tough to put Duda in with the other three.  He isn't Paul Goldschmidt but his stats this season compare reasonably to vaunted 1B such as Joey Votto, Adrian Gonzalez and Ryan Howard.  I feel he has taken step in right direction this season and has some upside. He is the only regular in the line-up with an OPS > .800

1B is not the biggest hole in the line-up.  LF is...  Happy to give Captain Kirk an extended look but I'm not sanguine that he is the guy.

@MetsFan1962 Grandy has been very solid for the past couple of months and Barcelona Fats is doing exactly what they expected him to do. CY is an unmitigated disaster.  As of now I'd rate the free agent haul a slight plus and maybe better if Grandy keeps trending up.

jenkins

@Steven Matregrano yeah, just attack the disabled for a typo. Way to go!! What a tremendous humanitarian you are!

metsfanman

@mankowski That OBP number is somewhat inflated by walks he got batting in the 8 hole, some even intentional, with pitcher on deck. My feeling on Tejada is that now that he seems to have his defensive confidence back, he would be a perfectly good and useful backup middle infielder. However, he is simply not a good enough hitter to be a starting player on a decent team, which it would be nice to see the Mets become sooner rather than later.

MetsFan1962
MetsFan1962

@Bob Primosch . .  I agree that Grandy is holding his own and Bartolo is doing much better than most of us thought he was capable of at 41 yrs old.

mankowski
mankowski

The inflated OBP argument has no merit. If it were true then all eighth place hitters would have a high number, but only one does.
