Can someone please explain to me what the love is for Tejada? I'm extremely confused. I know a little bit about the game but unlike a few people here I have never claimed to know everything.

The eye test says he's not a starting shortstop. So just looking at the numbers I'm more confused.

I don't understand this WAR s h i t at all but according to BaseballReference in his BEST years that everyone throws out he was a 2.0 and 2.1 WAR player. And a 0-2 is a reserve player and a starter is a 2.0+. So at his best he's barely a starter? Yet his worst year's are horrible. And this year he's a 0.1?

And just about all of his defensive numbers are negative through his career, (Rdrs, Rtot whatever these sabermetrics numbers mean).

I just don't get it. What am I missing?

Honestly it's silly we used this recap to talk about Tejada and Flores (yes it was probably mostly my fault).

BLACK, FAMILIA, MEJIA!!!!  Complain about our pathetic offense all you want, it's hard not to get EXCITED about that combo the way they looked tonight!

LET"S GO METS!

I ALSO would love to see what Flores has, and I'd like to see him get more playing time, even at the expense of Tejada.  But back to Tejada:

He's Twenty-four years old and has plenty of time to progress as a hitter.  He has an excellent eye at the plate, works a lot of walks and sees a lot of pitches in almost every at bat (As Keith has said many times:  "3-2 on Tejada, but this is where he goes to work").

I think he needs to bat 2nd because by the time a pitcher gets to David (in the 4 hole), he could easily have seen 18-30 pitches.  Tejada also has the ability to advance a runner ahead of him, even while making an out because he has very good bat control when he shortens his swing.

I AM NOT saying he'll ever be a 290/20/95 kind of hitter, but if you are knocking his Defense then you are obviously not paying attention.

TWENTY-FOUR YEARS OLD PEOPLE, you act like he's 30 and has shown us everything he's got.

Really? The guy calls himself "dickeydeep" and MY comment to him is pending ?

This is very easily a loss any other night. Dice-k is the reason we won. Two lucky swings that won't occur tomorrow. Still the worst lineup I have seen them run out there all season. If estrada didn't walk everyone its a loss for us. No hits. Campbell should be our leadoff hitter playing LF. I'd put flores second murph third wright fourth granderson fifth duda sixth put young in cf since he has to get 500 abs seventh and recker eighth

Tejada's Back folks, mark my words.  Whoever told him to "bulk up and hit more doubles" ruined his swing and his defense for a full year.  But he's back, and he should be batting 2nd ahead of Murph and David.

@mets2death Simple.  Sandy let our amazing home grown SS walk.  We have nobody (love flores but it's not his natural position).  And they chose Duda over Ike.

@Tarheel11 He walks, he gets on base, he works deep into counts, fouls pitches off at a sickening rate and "hunts strikes". The FO values this more than production. This moneyball approach only works when you have power hitters spread out in the lineup, which is why we have the second most runners left on base in the majors. A player like Flores they don't value because he swings at pitches out of the zone. It doesn't matter that he may be capable of driving in over 75 runs, it doesn't matter that he has been our best offensive prospect since David Wright, what matters is that he takes an at bat slightly different than Sandy Alderson wants him to. That is why Tejeda has been starting.

@dickeydeep

Deep breaths....repeat after me "It's one game". He was also 0 for his last 8 coming into the game. Let's get that average into at least the .250's before we start getting ahead of ourselves.

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@Zach Goeringer @Tarheel11 Could not agree more about the FO philosophy. To me SA so overvalues the HR and disregards the impact of SO's to an offense. You can't lod up the middle of your order with guys who are .220 hitters who hit HR's but strike out all the time. Just decimates an offense. I just don't get it.

I have never understood why Tejada is playing at all though! And I'm not saying Flores is an all star. I just feel like we know Tejada sucks so why not play Flores. It's not like we are losing anything. The numbers show that Tejada's glove is below average

Ok bro, be happy with this miraculous victory. Keep drinking terry and sandys koolaid. Any other night and this is a loss. The lineup did nothing

dickeydeep
dickeydeep

@Dr. Jonathan Reefer @dickeydeep He's a TWENTY-FOUR year old middle infielder with tons of MLB experience.  He has outstanding plate discipline and pitch recognition.  His defense on reaction play is WELL above average.   Yes he makes mental mistakes on occasion, but I think you are forgetting that he's still VERY young

Zach Goeringer
Zach Goeringer

@Tarheel11 @Zach Goeringer Starting Flores vs Tejeda for a full season would probably be a difference of about 50-60 rbi. Flores has torn up the minors and the only chance he got to start without interruption was last year when he was battling an ankle injury. Its truly mind boggling. The only hold up was suppose to be Flores being a defensive disaster at short and in his brief time there he has shown he can not only handle it but make tough plays as well. It should be a no brainer at this point.

Murphy is the only hitter of any value on this team and he will probably be traded in july. Its wins like this that frustrate me because it prevents any change but yet no one showed any signs of improvement

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@Zach Goeringer @Tarheel11 I do have concerns about Flores glove especially with Murphy at 2B but as god as my witness in comparison to Ruben Tejada this kid has to start.

Dave D'Agnese
Dave D'Agnese

Murphy will be gone in july if we are out of contention which we will be. If they can get back joc pederson from la for murph he will be gone. Tejada is having a decent week that's it. If they wouldn't sign abreu to play first then they aren't keeping murphy if he can net a good return. Rather than throw insults around while making your uneducated comments realize that this team as currently constructed will finish fourth or fifth and our offensive lineup is the worst in baseball. Murphy and gee or niese will be moved. Book it.

@Steven Matregrano @Dave D'Agnese  Right again...Only 156 some odd comments after a big win against a pretty dam good team.

When we were on that losing streak there were hundreds upon hundreds of posters/posers.

How's Reyes been doing sense that amazing season ?

Brian Webster
Brian Webster

@Dr. Jonathan Reefer @mets2death  And most egregious they let Reyes walk for nothing and didn't even at least get something for him by trading him as they did with Beltran, Dickey and even Byrd/Buck

Dave D'Agnese
Dave D'Agnese

The pitching staff can't give up two runs every night all season. We are a 70 win team with tonights lineup.

Brian Webster
Brian Webster

@Steven Matregrano @Dave D'Agnese  Flores can replace him at least for the rest of this season. And Mets love homegrown players until they have to start paying them what they judge to be too much money commensurate to their talent which for Murphy could be next season.

Brian Webster
Brian Webster

@Marc Singleton  And how's Dickey doing since his? The Mets knew they weren't going to shell out big bucks to keep Reyes so they should've sold high as they did with Dickey and as they did with Beltran, Byrd and Buck traded an impending FA with value that they weren't going to resign.

dickeydeep
dickeydeep

@Dr. Jonathan Reefer you make plenty of sense, you just are fixated on a player who's not as bad as you think.

I hope Flores works out, but until he gets more time at SS, have fun with the 5 extra singles up the middle every game.

Exactly what team without a player named Tulo counts on their SS for POWER?  The SS position is a defensive position first.

Brian Webster
Brian Webster

@Steven Matregrano @Dave D'Agnese  Obviously Flores is not near the player Murph is right now and may never be but he also comes at a much lower cost especially next season when Murph will be due an even larger jump in salary. I'm not sure what Murph can fetch back in the trade market but I am sure that the Mets do not view him as a guy they're building the team around and you're going to be disappointed if you do.

dickeydeep

@Dr. Jonathan Reefer @dickeydeep @Steven Matregrano

This isn't necessary directed at you but i am REALLY sick and tired of the concept of POTENTIAL.

The ONE mets position player  "can't miss prospect" who actually ever worked out was CARGO and he worked out YEARS LATER.

I'll keep the no-hitter, thanks.

dickeydeep
dickeydeep

@Dr. Jonathan Reefer @dickeydeep I Agree with most of the points you are making.  If Flores is in the MAJORS then he needs to play and not sit on the bench.  I just don't understand your (and so many others here) fixation on Tejada being Garbage with no value... it simply is not true.

ShawnP
ShawnP

@Steven Matregrano @Brian Webster @Dave D'Agnese  Agree...Murph's always been "underrated"for some reason besides us Met fans who know how  great a hitter this guy is.He gets the "black sheep"of the family/team treatment and I don't know why.I understand his makes some bone-headed mistakes from time to time but his bat certainly makes up for it.

This guy is literally one of the best hitters in the league, guess he's just not as good looking as Wright or some sheet like that,I don't know..

I do know one thing though,he is our best pure hitter and without him on our team we'd have a considerable less amount of wins then we do now.

Not saying he is a mega super star but,I think the guys face needs to be up there with the other outstanding hitters in the league are.

Brian Webster
Brian Webster

@Steven Matregrano @Dave D'Agnese  Because he will make too much money for the Mets to justify spending on basically a 1 tool player. All he does really well is hit for avg. He has some occasional pop but he's not a power hitter, he doesn't have speed and makes some incredibly boneheaded plays on the basepaths and he's worked hard to become acceptable defensively but he's still far from a good defensive player. I'd wager the Mets will feel with their limited funds they'd be able to better allocate Murph's money elsewhere and find a suitable replacement at 2B such as perhaps Flores for mere pennies on the dollar of what Murph will make. And then add on top of that whatever player or players the Mets are able to get in return for Murph. Personally I like Murph but I don't feel he's got much longer with this team.

Also I'm not interested at all in trading for Matt Kemp.

dickeydeep
dickeydeep

@Brian Webster @dickeydeep @Dr. Jonathan Reefer @Steven Matregrano oh yeah good point, i guess I was confused about that.  I don't follow other teams very much, lol

dickeydeep
dickeydeep

@Dr. Jonathan Reefer ya man, that's the ONLY reason i'm on here!

I keep saying IF RT is on the team he needs to bat 2nd ahead of Murph and Wright, for all the reasons about his plate discipline and ability to get on base or at least advance the runner.

If you HAVE to have Tejada, don't you think that makes sense?

dickeydeep
dickeydeep

@Dr. Jonathan Reefer First time I became a fan of Tejada:

July 2010 vs the Nats, Tejada is filling in at SS b/c Reyes and Castillo are both on the DL.  K-Rod is in trouble in the 9th and it feels like he's going to lose the game when this 20 year old kid calls for a pick off at 2nd base and ends the game.

The kid has GREAT baseball instincts, and he's STILL a kid.   I'm not saying he's going to be an all star, but the book is not closed on him yet.
