Recap: Mets 5 – Pirates 3

Result: The Mets snapped their three-game losing streak with a 5-3 win over the Pirates at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

Need to know: The Mets jumped on Pirates starter Gerrit Cole, who was making his first start since coming off the DL, scoring five runs in the first two innings. Eric Campbell got the scoring rolling with an RBI double in the first. A wild pitch scored a run and Kirk Nieuwenhuis added an RBI single for a 3-0 lead. Jon Niese pitched six innings and struck out five giving up three runs to improve to 5-4. The bullpen of Jeurys Familia and closer Jenrry Mejia (8 saves) was perfect setting down all nine batters they faced. Campnell had three hits while Daniel Murphy, in the three-hole for David Wright, drove in a pair of runs.

Game ball: Campbell had three hits and picked up his first stolen base of his career. With Wright’s uncertainty, that production out of third base is a bonus.

When Wright comes back, Soup needs to play in a platoon with Duda.  Be in the line-up against left-handers.

...its so frustrating being a fan of this  team...in an era of such parity they cant put together a real contending team...they are only six games out of first but i still dont feel like we have much of a chance...and this is six straight years and counting...just sayin...

Down on the farm, the 51s lost in extra innings, but Wilmer got his groove back going 3-5 with 2 RBI.

i think we might have something in campbell... he looked real good in that at bat where he doubled to left center. looked like he really knew what he was doing. kind of refreshing to see him and niewenhuis. both need more playing time.

Campbell is the man!  Play him everyday he shows good potential.  I like Familia & Meija for the last couple of innings.  We still need a big bat to get us over 500.  Sandy are you listening?

We have the arm's to be in the playoff hunt............The offense will have to play up to our expectations.........As we know good pitching gets out the best hitters........Gee will be back in about a week.......Lets hope we can get to 500 by August...........

Fell asleep on the game...surprised and impressed Mejia had a perfect 9th considering he threw 2 innings and 34 pitches last night.

Mets on schedule to win 74  games. Since TC does not know who to play on each day and his horrific in game planning I see a  64 win year.....very poor. This was the year to  get a lot better as Sandy had said 90 games for 2014.

How many games did TC lose with poor in game managing ?

answer: 11

Win 3, lose 4. Win 3 lose 4. That is the Mets for the past 5 years.

Sad part is that when they come here I'll be forced to listen to the Braves announcers. Oh my God. I think I'll just go to the car, pop the hood and suck on the exhaust manifold straight. Get it over with fast.

@pologround as much as i would like to see them get to 500 its just not happening. this team was built with mediocrity written all over it. and by mediocre i don't mean 500 i mean like just good enough to not be the worst team in the national league

No post that I saw. They were honoring the Negro League by wearing one of the old team uniforms from that league. So did the Pirates.

Solid game all around. Timely hitting and the bullpen held up.

I think a big key is Eric Yiung. When he got on the nature of the game changed. The pitcher became rattled and infielders were moving before pitches. He shook them up and it showed.

@greekgod So i'm clear, you believe the Mets should have 48 wins right now, and don't because of TC's poor management?

@nymetsrule Actually that's been the Mets for most of their 50+ year existence. So what? Do you just like to see yourself whine? Their young pitching looks very good; they need some better hitters. Maybe, just maybe they can compete in the next few years. Or maybe Harvey doesn't resemble his former self, Mejia gets hurt and the hitters they trade for don't do well. And they win 3 and lose 4 for the next 5 years. So what? You don't have to be a fan you know. No one is forcing you.

Hahahah so true I'm stuck listening to them too. Although honestly they have been better this year then previous years but still difficult to listen to.

@theglider I saw the first 6 or so innings.  Guys played a solid game behind Niese who battled in those middle innings when the plate started to dance on him.

Such a fundamentally flawed team.  The Mets have a bunch of players--based on their own talent level and how they are being used--who are better in small doses.  Both Youngs, and Niewy and Brown and Duda and Recker and Abreu (to an extent) etc...have all proven their play can suffer with over exposure.  The team has just been put together with a lot of secondary pieces being asked to take on primary roles....on any given night. Young's speed is great but his overall play doesn't keep him in the lineup enough. The whole thing is frustrating
