Result: The Mets snapped their three-game losing streak with a 5-3 win over the Pirates at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.
Need to know: The Mets jumped on Pirates starter Gerrit Cole, who was making his first start since coming off the DL, scoring five runs in the first two innings. Eric Campbell got the scoring rolling with an RBI double in the first. A wild pitch scored a run and Kirk Nieuwenhuis added an RBI single for a 3-0 lead. Jon Niese pitched six innings and struck out five giving up three runs to improve to 5-4. The bullpen of Jeurys Familia and closer Jenrry Mejia (8 saves) was perfect setting down all nine batters they faced. Campnell had three hits while Daniel Murphy, in the three-hole for David Wright, drove in a pair of runs.
Game ball: Campbell had three hits and picked up his first stolen base of his career. With Wright’s uncertainty, that production out of third base is a bonus.
What’s next: the Mets close their series with the Pirates on Sunday at 1:35 p.m. in Pittsburgh. Bartolo Colon goes for the Mets against Edison Volquez.
