Mid season and we have a pretty solid bullpen developing, Travis has started to get comfortable, our pitching depth has deepened even more as the least heralded of the young gun , degrom, is blossoming into a top of the rotation bulldog. Wheeler has had ups and downs but he is having more and more ups that are electric. Duds, while not clutch was the better option over Ike and has shown middle of the order type of production. Murphy is an all star. Grandy is a leader.

If I can say the same exact things at the end of this year, the mets have had a fantastic year no matter what the record says.

Maybe every hour of everyday they should be telling Chris Young that he's about to get released...apparently its only then that he starts producing anything.  This is also known as the "Tejada Effect."

The Mets are now 44-50, not 43-50. I know it seems like I'm nitpicking here but I have consistently seen you guys get stats and records wrong in your posts

mets playing good baseball. pitching has been crisp, and defense has been sharp. I would also trade for starlin castro. Maybe the cubs will take wilmer flores and montero for starlin castro straight up. I would totally do that

Perfect use for CY, PH every night with the occasional late inning double switch when needed. I would love to see Cambell get some more opportunities, 1B against Lefty's is great but another start in left against Righty's once a week would be nice, he has a higher BA then anyone on the team against Lefty's and Righty's, Kirk could play center on that day giving Lagares one day off a week, EY should be late inning PR the way Cincy used Hamilton during last year call up.

If the mets lose tomorrow to some joke of a pitcher named brad hand it will be classic mets.

Forget Herrera for 2B in the future - I am holding out for LJ Mazzilli.

Night in and night out now this bullpen has just been rock solid. It's one of those things, like a good offensive line in football, that's easy to miss.

Ya big hit by CY that doesn't mean u start him ok Terry. Start Newy and occasional start for Abreu and EY. CY is a right handed pinch hitter off the bench that's it, you can release him I could careless.

This is the first game i have missed all season, watched the highlights.. looked like an exciting game. glad we won!

Guys stop talking about all these possible trade targets. Sandy isn't going to make a move. The only move he might make is to trade away colon. And that had a less than 50% chance of happening.

William Bonilla

Now i actually have been against this for a while...but Kemp could help if he stays healthy I don't for see MVP type numbers from him again but if he played everyday I could see .275 and up to 20 HR from him..assuming the Dodgers eat a large portion of his contract would you trade for kemp?...if so who would you be willing to give up?

Dan Waters

I hope Alderson was serious about his comments on buying or selling at the deadline being based on how the team played down the stretch. They came through! I really hope he comes through.  I would be upset as a player on the team if he balked.

The all star break might be our kryptonite. We've notoriously struggled in the second half, but if we can keep playing the way we are throughout July and August, you can be sure you'll be seeing meaningful September baseball

First things first, win tomorrow then come out of the break ready to beat up on the padres

Did anybody hear the post game interview w CY?

After all the bashing when you hear him speak about pretty much everything you see why teams like him so much.

He's very smart, very upbeat and seems like a special guy. I just hope maybe his bat has come back to him (it happens).

Ya never know maybe it has taken this long and now he's found the stroke?

Joe Paulson

Nice for CY, but he doesn't get a game ball. This was a group effort and he shouldn't be singled out.

The biggest juggernaut will obviously be the 2nd half, as that has been a problem over past several  years. Will the Wilpons get that big rbi/bat player? We'll see..The Mets do have  an outside chance-,plenty of bs-ball left.

Get used to it, it happens allllll the time.

Brandon Austin

The front office considers shortstop as a defensive position, and they think that can win ball games with him playing there... Which they are. Btw he's been hitting over .300 for the last 6 weeks, can't ask much more from a number 8 hitter.

Mike Dell Italia
Mike Dell Italia

I'm cool with that. To me tejeda could be a solid untilty infielder. Give him the occasional start and pinch hit. A Legit everyday shortstop would be great to have. I'd like to go for the homerun and get Tulo but I would settle for Castro

borsh13
borsh13

It would take more than that especially now... Cubs will wait till the off season to trade him so there will be more teams interested... They have to be completely overwhelmed with the trade offer to do it this season

I promise you the Wilpons will not put any extra cash they have laying around on this ball club lol

@rico  He seems like a real good guy, but at this point he needs to do well in limited playing time to get more AB's

luckylou

He seems like a good guy but I don't think he turns it around for good. Best we can hold for is that he can be decent off the bench. Jason Bay was a great guy as well.

Gland1

@Joe Paulson Why shouldn't he be singled out?  If you have to give out a game ball, going with the guy who hit a pinch hit game tying home run in the 7th inning seems pretty reasonable.

Our second half went pretty well until September when Harvey and wright went down and Byrd was traded (arguably the 3 best players). This year I think we'll likely stand pat with what we have. There's no reason to trade for a rental when our chances of making the playoffs are slim unless we get a massive bat. What people need to realize is 2015 is the year the mets really turn into a bona fide contender

I don't see them being buyers...i know what Sandy said but my feeling is that they are either going to be sellers or just stand pat...hold on to Colon and just trade him in the off season

@niesesnose I agree, but you think the best Free agent Outfielder in 2015 is useless to our team.  Please explain the amazing trades you will make to sure up our outfield without signing someone like Colby Rasmus.

borsh13

There isn't much that sandy will be able to do as far as being a buyer... Most people that may be available will only help short term which there is no reason for the mets to do this season

niesesnose
niesesnose

Colby Rasmsus is just flat out bad this year. He's been worth negative value. I don't see how adding him would be a big upgrade over having a Kirk/Campbell/EY platoon. I'm sure there are better options out there than Colby Rasmus and his .268 OBP.

Melky Cabrera (30)

Chris Denorfia (34)

Jonny Gomes (34)

Tony Gwynn Jr. (32)

Scott Hairston (35)

Reed Johnson (38)

Ryan Ludwick (36) – $9MM mutual option with a $4.5MM buyout

Darnell McDonald (35)

Mike Morse (33)

Alfonso Soriano (39)

Vernon Wells (36)

Josh Willingham (36)

Delmon Young (29)

These are all LF FA this offseason. Many are better than Rasmus

Rasmus can't hit. Why is he an improvement?

Dan Waters

@borsh13 Trumbo talk has been going around.  I would find that acceptable.  A lot of people are saying he is to similar to Grandy, Duda etc but I would still take him.  This team hasnt had a legit bopper for years and he can crush with a low average.  He might not get us to the playoffs but he would be a step in the right direction.  If you add that extra special bat during the off season or via another trade, to compliment Wright, Grandy, Trumbo Duda D'arnaud then we're in serious business. My pipe dream would be Tulo of course.

William Bonilla
William Bonilla

There is also Tomas who is an unknown but so was Abreu

Raymond Kim
Raymond Kim

@niesesnose yes lets sign outfielders past their prime who want to come play on the mets as their final resting place, hoping to God that they have an amazing year.  I can pull players off Mlbtraderumors.com also.  They actually have rasmus listed as the #8 ranked FA.  None of the players you listed are listed.

Dave D'Agnese
Dave D'Agnese

@niesesnose and mark trumbo is a better option than every single one of those with maybe the exception of morse who will more than likely resign with the giants anyway

Raymond Kim
Raymond Kim

@Dave D'Agnese @Raymond Kim Do you think Barry Bonds in his prime is a FA next season?  cmon people, who are you signing.  We are not going to hit the jackpot with Marlon Byrd's every year.

bigdirty
bigdirty

I like Trumbull. Legit 30 hr 100 RBI guy. Yeah he he hits.235 but I think we are back in a time period where sluggers don't also hit .300. I do think trumbo is better served at first base than of.

Dan Waters
Dan Waters

Just basic trade scenarios of Montero/Plawecki one or both for Trumbo.

Colon, Thor and Murphy for Tulo.  If that isn't good enough throw in Matz or even Gee.

Trumbo will come off the books after 2015 and maybe we could see Conforto at that time.

A rotation of Harvey, Wheeler, Niese, Hefner, DeGrom, Gee or Matz depending who goes in the above scenario, and/or a veteran signing.

A lineup with Wright, Tulo, Grandy, Trumbo, Duda, Darnaud batting 3-8 is potent. Maybe even put D'arnaud in the two hole if he continues hitting.  We still need a lead off hitter though. Ideally it would be Lagares if he makes the necessary adjustments.

Tulo is probably unrealistic. He may not even be traded.  It's nice to dream though.

theglider

Rasmus is hitting .212. He had a decent year in 2013, but before that hit .223 and .225.

How is he any good?

niesesnose
niesesnose

What's so great about Rasmus? Please indulge me. The man is hitting .217 with a .268 OBP. His only redeeming quality is his power, which is inflated by Rogers Centre.

niesesnose
niesesnose

I like Trumbo, but my goodness is he an awful OF. I'd rather them go out and sign Melky Cabrera.

niesesnose
niesesnose

This is like saying since Verlander isn't a FA, we should just sign Rodrigo Lopez and live with it

Raymond Kim
Raymond Kim

@niesesnose Are you new here?  We get people to come here by either trading away elite prospects or overpaying average to above average guys.  You act like we have a winning program here.  I am being realistic.  He is the best FA OF next season, we have a need.  Otherwsie we have to hope we get a miracle Marlon Byrd signign again or we are stuck like this season.

rico
rico

@niesesnose trumbo is a clod and doesn't have have a broken leg or something?

Dave D'Agnese
Dave D'Agnese

@niesesnose we have the best defensive cfer who can cover ground. plus we have a option at first base if duda ever got injured its an easy fix plus the power can remain in the lineup

Raymond Kim
Raymond Kim

@niesesnose it doenst matter.  We think that the mets 8-2 run means the team is ok.  We win 54, we lose 54.  The other 54 games play like the mets (meaning we play just under 500) with this roster.

niesesnose
niesesnose

Fine then. Last year was flukey as he had a .356 BABIP. And if you're not using average use His OBP which is equally pathetic..

theglider
theglider

Then tell us why he's any good. He doesn't get on base, strikes out a ton, and didn't hit for any power before getting to Toronto, then hit 23 homers.

niesesnose
niesesnose

Ludwick and Cabrera are better than Rasmus this year. As are Willingham and morse who play in larger ball parks.

Raymond Kim
Raymond Kim

@Dave D'Agnese @Raymond Kim @niesesnose We need those guys.  And wouldn't you rather trade those guys as part of a deal for someone great?  And btw you have no clue if arizona makes that trade.  I do know if we pay rasmus 5 years 75 million he would sign, unless someone gave him even more.

Raymond Kim
Raymond Kim

@niesesnose This thread is getting out of hand. lol.  We are posting all over the place. But the main thrust of my argument is that we know we can pay for a mediocre guy to sit in LF and be average.  We have too many offensive holes on this team, Sandy risked it this year and signed CY.  I dont want a guessing game in the OF next year.

Raymond Kim
Raymond Kim

@niesesnose You cannot keep naming 35+ year old guys or guys who have been suspended for PED's and say they are guaranteed to play anywhere near their production this year next year.  I

Dave D'Agnese
Dave D'Agnese

@Raymond Kim @Dave D'Agnese @niesesnose 75 million for rasmus??????? are you crazy bro????? look how screwed atlanta is with bj upton right now. you do not deserve 75 million when youre hitting 212 i'm sorry. montero isnt in this teams long term plans trust me. the only use montero will potentially have is the long man in the bullpen. we have 8 starters not including matz for next season. plus plawecki is expendable cuz of travis

niesesnose
niesesnose

I don't understand. If you don't want to play the guessing game, why would you sign Rasmus? We have 2 real holes- SS and LF, and even SS has been decent lately.

niesesnose
niesesnose

Cabrera's proved this year he's just a good hitter. No PED's and he's still been very good.

Raymond Kim
Raymond Kim

@Dave D'Agnese @Raymond Kim @niesesnose Harvey may never be harvey again.  Snydergaard has not thrown a single pitch in the big leagues yet.  Matz is 2 years away.  We keep the arms until we have to trade them, we wont really know about Harvey until the earliest spring training.

Raymond Kim
Raymond Kim

@niesesnose why do you live in short samples?  You know you can buy players.  You dont know if other teams will trade with you.  I don't want to get into game theory...

niesesnose
niesesnose

He'll probably fetch a 2 year deal at this point. No one is paying 75 mil for a guy who's had negative value and .268 OBP with power numbers inflated by the fact he plays in the AL East

niesesnose
niesesnose

I don't live in short samples. Trust me, I realize Tejada isn't the answer. But Rasmus would make 0 sense for this team.

Lisa Sturtevant
Lisa Sturtevant

Don't forget about Jeremey Hefner. Before he hurt his elbow, he was as dominant as any pitcher for a significant stretch of time.

Raymond Kim
Raymond Kim

@Dave D'Agnese @Raymond Kim @niesesnose If you havent noticed, pitchers are blowing out elbows every week.  Really, harvey and syndergaard and matz and this team is still ok?  cmon. Harvey and syndergaard have to be great for this team to go.

Raymond Kim
Raymond Kim

@niesesnose I guess you are right.  The season ends tonight.  They decided that no one plays the rest of their games this season.

Raymond Kim
Raymond Kim

@niesesnose other than some trade where we get a stud OF because unless you are Paul Depodesta hiding behind a clever handle, then you do not know enough about every organizations farm systems nor ours to make more than a 50/50 guess.  Rasmus is an average player who will improve the team enough.  It would be great if Kirk can claim the spot, but who knows.

Dave D'Agnese
Dave D'Agnese

@Raymond Kim @Dave D'Agnese @niesesnose if this team were to go out and spend 75 million on colby rasmus but refused to give nelson cruz or jose abreu even less than that then that what be the worst management decision in baseball. they would even make rick dipietros signing look good

niesesnose
niesesnose

No but there's no sign that Rasmus is gonna have some massive turnaround in the last 65 games. Isn't that "realistic" to not assume a player with negative valueis just magically gonna turn into a guy who fetches 5 years 2/3 into the season?

niesesnose
niesesnose

But Ramsus wouldn't be an average player here. His power would go and defense would too as he would play in a larger stadium. Heck he's not even an average player in a hitter 'a ballpark in the AL this year. If Sandy can't find a better OF than him, which would be hard to believe, then I'd be very surprised

Jack Butler
Jack Butler

Why is no one talking about the Tomas kid from Cuba

Dave D'Agnese
Dave D'Agnese

@Raymond Kim @Dave D'Agnese @niesesnose it doesnt take a rocket scientist to know that colby rasmus isnt anywhere near the type of player that those two are. let alone the fact that he isnt worth 75 million. and youre asking a tea who is cheap to spend 75 million on a guy hitting .212 in a hitters park and bring him into the worst hitting park in the majors

niesesnose
niesesnose

No he's not average. Explain to me how he is average. A -.2 WAR and .268 OBP is very below average.

Raymond Kim
Raymond Kim

@niesesnose right this second he is not average.  Yes.  But that doenst mean anything other than for today.  We will sign someone your named off that list, they will not be good.  Rasmus will be average, and we will wonder if we were a little better we may have gotten the wildcard in 2015.  Seriously, its not your money.  If the team gets better even 1% who cares, the Wilpons have to spend some money.  We dont have the bats in the minors and Harvey is coming back from TJ.  We have to keep the arms till we know he is good.

Raymond Kim
Raymond Kim

@Dave D'Agnese @Raymond Kim @niesesnose If you read the thread, I said Rasmus is average.  But it doenst matter you know exaclty who will lead the league in Hrs next year, we better sign or trade for them now before anyone finds out.
